Gustave Eiffel avait répondu: "La tour sera le plus haut édifice qu'aient jamais élevé les hommes. Ne sera-t-elle donc pas grandiose aussi à sa façon ? Et pourquoi ce qui est admirable en Égypte deviendrait-il hideux et ridicule à Paris ?".
