I'm looking for some upbeat news from the year and I am not finding anything at all. As I wrote those words the phone rang. It was a woman calling from someplace in India and she told me that there were a lot of reports of computer errors. She asked me to please turn on my computer. I asked her if she got many people that stupid. She hung up. That hang up is the echo of the call that we received 5 minutes earlier from CBE asking to speak to somebody who doesn't and never has lived at this number. I hung up on them.

It may not make the next year any better but it would be sweet if the phone stopped ringing.

The fun thing about the political season is that it keeps coming around every year. The DNC, who allowed Bernie to run like one of them, has pulled his access to their donor files because, politics.  If looks could kill they probably will because the one candidate has the stare of a basilisk and the other looks like one. Bernie is suing his good friends in the Aligned Party and leading the rest of the Socialist Party out on a quick-strike in the Courts. I'm not sure why the DNC ever let him play in their sandbox in the first place. It's kind of a stupid thing to do when you think about it.

NATIONAL REVIEW SLINKS INTO DISGRACE

I took a look at the current state of Michael Mann's lawsuit against Mark Steyn, National Review, et al and left with great contempt for National Review. Steyn puts it best.

There are times when I wish I had the same kind of co-defendants I had in my free-speech wars in Canada: Maclean's, unlike National Review, is a dentist's waiting-room mag not an ideological mission, but they and I were as one in our fight not just against the Canadian Islamic Congress but against the now repealed Section 13. By contrast, National Review, for whom I wrote for a decade and a half, are offering the curious and fainthearted defense that they were never my publisher but merely an "interactive computer service provider" to which I had the access code (see page 49 of their most recent brief). They're a court filing or two from claiming they're Lufthansa and I'm Andreas Lubitz - just some crazy guy who locked himself in the NR cockpit. 

Oh, well. For all that, I've never felt more optimistic about how this case is going. If there is a "97 per cent consensus" on the science, all 97 per cent decided to steer well clear of Michael E Mann: Last fall, not a single amicus brief was filed on his behalf, not one. He claims he's "taking a stand for science", but evidently science is disinclined to take a stand for him.

On the other hand, and somewhat to my surprise, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Reporters Committee for Press Freedom, the American Society of News Editors, the Association of American Publishers, the Association of Alternative Newsmedia (The Village Voice et al), NBC Universal, Bloomberg News, the publishers of USA Today, Time, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times, The Detroit Free Press, The Seattle Times, The Arizona Republic and The Bergen County Record have all filed amici briefs against his attempted shredding of the First Amendment. They're in no way fans of mine, but they recognize that this is the most consequential free-speech case before the US courts since New York Times vs Sullivan, and if Mann wins it would be a catastrophic defeat for the First Amendment. That said, on global warming and "climate change", they largely agree with him. But I've also been heartened to learn how many scientists across the spectrum want nothing to do with Mann (scroll down here), and regard a defeat for him in court as a victory for genuine science.

It's funny how the science of man made global warming is collapsing all around except in the dim-witted minds of alarmists and governments hell bent on screwing the tax payer out of more money in order to fix a global climate scare that all rational beings admit simply cannot be fixed. All they talk about is slowing the rate of increase by forcing the first world to join the third world in grinding poverty and starvation but there is never any talk about reversing the global effects of solar infall variation that has, over the eons, caused the world to warm and cool. Their insane shrieks of doom fall on ears increasingly deaf to people who so obviously manipulate the data and then lie about it.

They make laughing stocks of real scientists and researchers and have thoroughly trashed the time honored process of peer review. They have also, with the help of its own lawyers, destroyed the reputation of National Review.

SOLILIQY

I woke up and went upstairs to my computer and then I seemed to take a step backward in time. As I listen to the little birds across the street, it seems more common than it used to be.

My mother asked me to pick up a book she had reserved at the local branch of the Arlington Library. As a dutiful son, I walked that half mile to pick up the 15 pound book and brought it home, sort of under my arm. I mean that book was seriously heavy.

I'm actually an historian. I think you would enjoy any of these links, particularly the Bulwer-Lytton one. We remember him for his 'dark and stormy night' but there was so much more.

There was a shooting of two 'gunmen' who opened fire on a security gunman who was standing around making sure that no islamic terrorists could succeed in attacking a group of people celebrating the best cartoon depiction of infamous pederast Mohammed. This Daily Mail story gives more details.

It has been many hours since these 'gunmen' attacked the art show but there has been no word at all on their identity or intent and yet these kind of scumbags are notorious for bringing along their manifesto and maybe even a video tape explaining their need to kill unbelievers. I find it odd that the press and security services have clamped down on the identity of the wannabe killers.

I note also that the Agency has blacked out the cartoons lest some loony muslim go berserk and randomly burn down homes, offices, Baltimore, etc, yet they did not make any effort to conceal the identity of the winner of the draw mohammed contest and left his name and image right up there in their photos of the incident of the attack. We know more about a peaceful man than we do about his wannabe killers.

What this translates to in my mind is that anybody at all who draws and posts a picture of mohammed should have automatic right to concealed carry a weapon in every state in America because, by God when the muslims catch up to him/her they aren't always going to have armed SWAT standing around waiting to intercept the killers.

This country is starting to resemble the caliphate in Iraq/Syria. With all the unregulated spying on every call made by all Americans, why isn't law enforcement picking these scum off long before they launch their attacks? After Snowden's leaks they really don't have a leg to stand on and tell us that they don't monitor EVERY CALL MADE AND RECEIVED in the world and EVERY EMAIL sent anywhere. Our inability to be pro-active is almost British now. Find them and deport them.
