A story about Miracles

{ I posted this story on my Gallery of Goodness blog but I wanted to share it on my blog as well.}

Meet my good friends Katy, Micah and their two beautiful children (Madison and Graysen).

Katy was my neighbor for a short while (too short if you ask me) and we became dear friends... and then they moved to Texas for work. Sad, sad day for me. Katy has the most tender, sweet, sweet soul. The light of Christ radiates through her. I wish all of you could know her.
She is a remarkable woman.
The following story of Katy and the birth story of her little boy Graysen is very, very moving. I can't believe the things she went through... and still has to go through... but her faith in her savior Jesus Christ and the love of her husband and family is what pulls her through. She is amazing.
Go grab a tissue or two and keep reading:

The Story.

This is a very happy story.
This is also a sad story.
But mostly, this is a story about miracles.

It all started late Saturday night when I went into labor.  Just like that, after two weeks of non-eventful bed rest and only days before our scheduled delivery, I started contracting regularly every few minutes.  I couldn't feel a thing, but my nurse saw the contractions on my monitor and came in to check on me.  "Trust me, it won't be very long before you start to feel it, Sweetie," she said. "Time to call your husband!"  By the time Micah arrived 20 minutes later, I was feeling every single one of those contractions, a minute and a half apart.  I was moved to a labor and delivery room, and there I cried and breathed and squeezed the feeling out of Micah's hand until 1 a.m., when I was wheeled into an operating room down the hall and rolled onto a steel bed. The anesthesiologist gave me a spinal to numb me from the chest down, my arms were stretched out to either side of me, and a curtain went up. Micah came in, dressed in a white paper jumpsuit and blue cap, and he sat down by my head and held my hand and started making jokes because he knew I was scared to death.

Twenty minutes later, our baby boy was born (I will spare you all the gory details of what it feels like to be fully cognizant while you are cut into, muscles are torn apart, and organs are moved around...).  Because I couldn't see anything past the big blue curtain at my chest, all I could do was listen.  As soon as I heard my baby's lusty little cry, I immediately felt overwhelming relief-- at least I knew his lungs were strong. I caught a glimpse of him as he was carried to a table to be cleaned-- so tiny!-- and in a few minutes a nurse brought him over and held him close to me, all bundled up with bright pink skin and squinty little eyes.  I was able to reach up and touch the back of his head for a few seconds before he was whisked away to the NICU for testing.

And then things got scary.

Dr. Jacobs leaned over the blue curtain and before she said a word I knew something was wrong.  She said, "Kathryn, I need to talk to you about your surgery."  She proceeded to tell us that during the course of the pregnancy, the placenta had become deeply embedded in my uterus (a condition called Placenta Accreta)-- so much so that to try to remove it would cause severe damage to the uterus and possibly other organs, and potentially cause life threatening hemorrhaging.  The only option, for my safety-- and Dr. Jacobs made it clear that I didn't have a choice in the matter-- was to remove my uterus along with the placenta.  It took a few seconds for the implications of this to sink in, and when it did, I started to cry.  And then Micah started to cry, which made me cry harder because in the eleven years I've known him, I've only seen him cry once.  Then they sent him out of the operating room.  At that point I was given a sedative and quickly fell asleep, but Micah told me later that he had been taken back to my labor and delivery room and left alone for the remainder of the surgery.  For the next 45 minutes, he told me, he was left to wonder how everything was going and even tried to prepare himself in case I didn't make it through the operation.  Looking back on the whole experience, that's by far one of the hardest parts of it all-- knowing he had to go through that.

But the operation was successful, and when I came to I was back in my room with Micah right by my bed.  A nurse started to explain what had taken place and what was left of my anatomy and what to expect.  Dr. Jacobs had been able to leave my ovaries intact, so I would still have hormone regulation and monthly ovulation.  However, no more periods, and no need for birth control.  She told me she could go get my uterus if I wanted to see it (Really?! Ew.).  As she talked, though, all I could think was, I can't have any more kids.  And then I would start to cry again.

Even with all the shock and hurting, when Micah was finally able to visit the NICU and bring back pictures of our perfect little boy-- healthy and whole despite being early and so small-- I honestly couldn't feel anything but overwhelming joy and gratitude.  Because he is a little miracle, in every sense of the word.  Thinking back on the entire pregnancy, and every event leading up to delivery, we realize now how everything happened for a specific reason.  We can't help but see so many tender mercies of the Lord in the whole experience.

From the very beginning, I had an unexplainable feeling that I needed to opt for a repeat C-section, rather than attempt a VBAC delivery.  I kept telling my doctor that I wasn't sure why, only that I wanted to deliver this baby in the safest way possible, even though the risks of problems with a VBAC are usually minuscule.  So all along, I prepared myself for a C-section.  And it's a darn good thing, because had we attempted a vaginal delivery with the placenta attached to the uterus, things could have been really nasty.  The doctors also told us that had the pregnancy progressed any further, the placenta most likely would have grown into other organs besides the uterus, and even onto the baby, causing much much scarier problems.  How lucky I was to have delivered as early as I did.  Coincidence that my water broke eight weeks early?  We're pretty sure it wasn't.  Coincidence that I was able to be in the hospital for two weeks prior to delivery, where I could get the antibiotics and steroids our baby needed to finish developing early? Nope.  Coincidence that we were able to have two beautiful children- a daughter and a son- before an emergency hysterectomy? Not a chance.  Some of my friends and family members have asked if we feel upset or angry at the way things happened.  Absolutely not.
We feel blessed beyond words.

Any disappointment we've experienced is far, far outweighed by feelings of complete gratitude and indebtedness to the Lord.  He has taken our little family in the palm of His hand and given us more than we can ever understand.  He has blessed us with two beautiful little miracle babies, and protected my life as well (Madison's delivery was nearly as scary and complicated).  Apparently my body just isn't cut out for any more pregnancies.  We know that we want more kids, and we know the Lord will provide other ways for us to welcome more of His children into our family.  We are very excited about the prospect of adoption, or foster care, etc.  Who knows what He has in the works for us?  We just know that we can trust Him completely.  He's definitely proved that to us.

Meanwhile. I am home and healing, slowly but surely. Graysen is doing well in the NICU and making remarkable progress every day.  He doesn't need any oxygen support, he's finally off antibiotics and IV fluids, and is no longer under phototherapy lights for jaundice.  We're not sure when we'll be able to bring him home, but hope it will be sooner than later!

The verdict is in....

I'm sorry for putting some of you through torture with that last video we did. haha. We love you. I had SO much with this whole gender revealing thing. It was super hard for me to keep it a secret all day long! But, I did it! :)
Here's THE video.
{ sorry... it got dark fast but we wanted to wait till everyone got there. Also, sorry about the long pause in the video... we were waiting to connect on Facetime with my parents in Texas, but it wasn't working. Anyway... ENJOY!}

And here SHE is.
{ The doctor told us she's VERY sure it's a girl. I'm also measuring bigger than I thought I was. It turns out I'm not 16 weeks tomorrow, I'll be 17 weeks in 2 days.}

I think we'll call her:
Madeline

Isn't she lovely?

My sister and Lance were more than kind to let us do this little gathering/party at their house.
Ashley went ALL OUT and made the CUTEST decorations for the party!
She did it ALL. She's amazing!
SO, so cute.

She made these adorable flags...
When everyone came over, they picked whatever color the gender they thought the baby was...
about half picked blue and the other half picked pink
Both my mom and Kelly thought it was going to be a BOY. :)

Here's the cute box Ashley wrapped with the balloons inside....
Everyone was so anxious... and I loved it!

Here's everyone with their votes.

Nick and Jason have been BFFs since they were 8 years old.
McKell and I call them "boyfriends."
Tonight... they were wearing the exact same thing (almost.)
Seriously, they crack me up.

Boyfriends for life  eternity.

Here's the clan... waiting patiently...

Nick and I are SO excited.
The ultra sound today was so unreal! It was so amazing. It was so so neat to watch her move around. Her little ankles were crossed... and she just seemed super relaxed and comfortable.
I loved watching her move. I loved seeing her little hands and feet.
We are in LOVE with her.

We really are so blessed with such wonderful family and friends!
Thank you to those who came!
{We missed my family in Texas! }

Fun Week

It's been a fun week. Well, as much fun one could have constantly on the verge of throwing up every 5 minutes... but keeping busy and my mind off of it helped a tad. It was so nice having family and close friends in town for a little bit.

Katherine flew in from Mesa, AZ on July 12th to surprise Ashley on her birthday. It was one of my most favorite moments seeing the look on Ashley's face when she saw her best friend and her beautiful new baby.
Her husband, BJ, flew in the next night and they stayed that entire week. It was a lot of fun having them around.

{All pictures taken from amateurs on the iphone} :)

Isn't baby Kate beautiful?

 Sisters

My family drove in on Sunday for a QUICK visit.
It was a little too quick for me. They left at 3 am this morning to drive 20 hours back home to Texas.
They're crazy. It was a ton of fun having my mom, dad, and little sister, Celeste here for a couple of days. She's moving up here next month and we are so excited to have her up here!

We love the dancing game on the connect.
I taught her how to jerk. haha.

Fresh picked veggies from Ashley's little garden.

Oh how I love this pup.

mom and sisters

We took Celeste around Provo looking for an apartment that would suit her well.
She's 18 so we wanted to find a fun, social place for her to live.
We took her to King Henry and she liked the feeling there.
I lived in King Henry when I was 18 or 19 too.
I think she'll really like it there.
We signed her up right away.... we got lucky b/c there were only 2 spots open.
I can't believe my baby sister is grown up!

Family dinner at Chilis last night.

When Katherine and BJ were here, we went up the canyon and had tin foil dinner with some friends!
I LOVE the canyon.

She's so cute.

Even though my family only stayed for 2 days, it was fun having them around. They are the greatest. We're way excited b/c we're going to Hawaii in about 2 weeks!
I.CAN'T.WAIT.
We hope Katherine and BJ can come too. { Please BJ? haha.}

Nick's going to Chicago tomorrow for a research conference. I'm excited for him but sad to be with out him for a few days. We've gotten a few "secondary application" requests back for Medical School. ( So far from Loma Linda and University of Southern California.)
TEAM CALIFORNIA!

I wonder where we'll end up after all is said and done!
I hope everyone is having a lovely summer.
Even though mine has been full of nausea and lots of time in bed... I will praise the day when I feel normal again. I also can't wait to meet this little precious baby growing inside of me. It will all be so worth it!

oh, before I forget....

My friend, Ellen, just opened a cute Etsy shop.
She makes and sells these amazing baby wraps.
You can check it out HERE.
I can't wait to get one or two from her!

14 weeks

I am 14 weeks today. Doesn't that mean I'm into my second trimester? Why doesn't it feel like it?

I barfed again last night even.

I've come to the conclusion I will be one of those pregnant ladies who are sick their entire pregnancy.

{but deep down inside I'm still hoping for that chance that I will wake up one day feeling like a brand new woman in my second trimester.}

A girl can hope, can't she?

Happy Birthday to my Sister!

Today my little sister turns 25.
Twenty-five is a good age!
For those of you who don't know Ashley... you are missing out.
Here are 25 reasons why I love and admire her.

1. Ashley has always been the peacemaker in our home. She has always been the "calm and collected" type and always brought so much peace and happiness to our lives.

2. She goes out of her way to make sure she has a very deep and real relationship with each of her siblings. We all adore her and have a good relationship with her.

3. Ashley is so sensitive to people. She's very perceptive and if you're having a bad day... she's the first one to notice and she'll do what she can to make you feel better.

4. She is so quick to complement and make you feel like you walk on water and can do anything! She even does this with complete strangers and she always finds the good in others.

 5. Ashley is one of the most giving people I know. She would do ANYTHING for those she loves. I remember once I was out of town and had to come back and move into my new apartment. I remember feeling super stressed and was worried about the time frame to move, etc. When I got back into town, she had already moved ALL my stuff AND decorated my new room and had everything put away. I was amazed by her.

6. Ashley knows how to have fun. She loves to laugh and being around laughter.

7. Ashley is quite the artist. She has always been that way. She is so good at everything she does. She loves to paint and create. She is always thinking of new ways to do things and how she can "better" things.

8. She has SUCH a great taste for fashion. If I EVER need any advise in that category... she is always there to help me out. She always looks so cute where ever she is.

9. Ashley has a special way with people. She genuinely loves the people that come in her path. She cares about them and wants to get to know them. One thing about Ashley is if you come into her life... you will never go out of it because you have her heart forever. She LOVES people. What a blessing it is if you know her.

10. Ashley has the cutest dimples. She has always been SO happy since she was a little baby. She's still that way.

11. She is such a hard worker. She puts her whole heart in everything she does. She dreams big... and then works to fulfill those dreams: like opening her own Belgium waffle shop in Provo, for example. It's a huge success and she (and lance) both work so hard!

12. Ashley is such a great listener. I know if I ever need anyone to talk to... she will listen and then tell me her advise or what she thinks. She always has her head on strait and usually knows what she's talking about.

13. Ashley's home is your home. If you step foot into her house... she will feed you, give you a place to sleep, and clothe you even.

14. Ashley has had the same best friends since she was a little girl. They are still best friends to this day. That shows you something about Ashley's character.

15. Ashley is quick to GIVE. She will give you all the money and love she has to offer and she never expects anything in return. I don't know many people like her. She truly is a selfless and genuine soul.

16. Ashley is so good about giving people the benefit of the doubt. She never gets offended by people. She sees the best in you and focuses on the good in people. ( I think I've already mentioned this, but this is SUCH a great quality of hers.)

17. She was voted "Best Personality" in High School. She also won Homecoming Queen. Her beauty shines from the inside-out.

19. Ashley loves her family. She loves her husband and her pup: Zoe. She puts family first.

20. Ashley has great taste in music. She is always finding something new and is quick to share her findings with you.

21. Ashley is a true Southern Bell. If you know her... she feels like HOME to you.

22. Ashley has a heart of gold.

23. Ashley is good at everything she does. Did you know that she came up with the waffle recipe at their shop { The Awful Waffle } and it took her months because she wanted to perfect it. And she did.

 24. Ashley is SO great with children. She has such a playful and fun heart... especially when she's around them. She also loves animals. That shows something about her character once more.

25. I am so blessed to be Ashley's sister. At times, I feel like she's MY big sister. She has been nothing but a blessing in my life and I've learned so much from her and continue to learn from her each day. I'm so grateful we get to live so close and I get to be apart of her life. She has touched my heart in so many ways and I admire & love her dearly.

If you don't know my sister.... you really should get to know her.

She will leave footprints on your heart.

Happy Birthday Ashley!!
