I also suggest looking at things like volunteer work and endorsements, because it really, really helps with things like sheriff and judicial elections, but can be useful in all sorts of primaries when you have multiple good options.

There is no shortage of bilingual people in the state. I don't understand why they couldn't just hire someone to do it with less hassle and no racism.

* Monday morning I stayed up despite my exhaustion to push out a truncated aggregate and do phone bureaucracy. The first one went fast and got me enough more food benefits that I can go get perishables, probably Tuesday or Wednesday, which I surely need.

My suspicion that this was an ill omen for the second phone bureaucracy was correct. Spent nearly an hour and a half trying to trick my way past the voice bot gatekeeper that kept telling me to us their online AI assistant and then hung up over and over again, plus long waits on hold where they'd also randomly hang up so I had to start over and over and over. I lost track but I estimate about eight attempts just to get nothing solved when I did reach a live human. Sigh.

* This is why there was very little live posting Wednesday, and you shouldn’t be alarmed if I don’t post much Thursday.

Wednesday muscle spasms in my abdomen and thighs woke me up. I had potassium earlier in the week. I think this was related to the abdominal tremors that made me not do physio Monday. Spasms in general are both painful and exhausting, but the abdominal ones are far more exhausting than physio and harder to mitigate than, say, a charley horse.

I went and did the hot bath thing and I was thought I was mostly recovered, but spasms are exhausting and I needed to get the perishables, because I only have until the 28th to spend the extra food allotment and it only went through Monday. I needed a bunch of things badly, also including ingredients for New Millennial to take home for my food prep. I also need to do a library run, preferably Thursday, but Friday on the outside. Groceries is very close, and also, I’d have someone to put groceries away and feed me if I went right then.

It was rough and I deteriorated noticeably through the process. I went a little over, but over is better than under as it uses the whole benefit and I’d planned for it. I was late enough that it was self check only. I am objectively bad at self check. Most self check machines refuse to recognize my fingers as real, ad it can take 10-15 minutes for me to get one button to register. As a result I only do it when there is no other option, so I have very little experience.

Self check is basically useless for me 99 out of a hundred times and it also means fewer jobs.

About half the stuff in my cart was fruit or veg from the fresh produce section.

They had bought new readers since last time I’d been forced to use them and get this: They recognize my fingers as real. O.o I wonder if they will apply this new technology to cell phones. (The old school pressure mechanism ones I can use, but modern cell phones don’t do that and can’t identify my fingers as fingers. Apparently it’s not just me having this problem also at regular check out when they replaced the pads there to. It is annoying. I don’t understand how replacing a technology that works with one that only works for some people is an upgrade, but here we are).

Anyway, this is the first time since the new tech was introduced where I didn’t need attendant help for the buttons to believe I existed.

It is still so much faster if someone who does this for living does check out, but I made it.

I had nothing left when I got back, but I’d bought easy stuff for New Millennial to make while doing the usual kitchen stuff so I could just lie down. I’d eaten about half my dinner when the spasms came back worse.

So I spent a couple more hours on Spasms as an activity. Livia could tell something was very wrong and kept herding me back to bed. There was no way to explain to her lying down hurts worse, since I can’t easily move my body around into whatever hurts least for that set of muscles spasming, and also I can’t hydrate, which I needed to do.

I gave in anyway each time, as she was so distressed she was using her voice. I’d lie down and she’d lie next to me and I’d pet her butt because I couldn’t reach the rest. She’d get up. I’d shuffle back to try to mitigate. she’d come get me. Towards the end she’d herd me to bed, then run right off to do cat stuff and I’d painfully drag myself back out again.

She’s a sweet, sweet girl.

* Thursday, on top of the massive pile of urgent action items and being two week behind on news because of horrible physical challenges, Waterfox updated and scrambled every fucking thing. It's going to take hours I don't have to untangle it. Fucking A Waterfox!

* Friday I stayed up for a library run, then put away the forage stuff before bed. I managed physio okay, but was so exhausted after that I let Livia persuade me to stay in bed with her way too long. There are so many things needing doing here, and the effort of sitting up has me low key weepy. It is annoying. 4:37AM and I've accomplished nothing.

I don't know where you live, so I can't link this for you, but I find the Progressive Voter Guide online very helpful in narrowing down candidates in the often packed primaries where I live.

I also suggest looking at things like volunteer work and endorsements, because it really, really helps with things like sheriff and judicial elections, but can be useful in all sorts of primaries when you have multiple good options.

REMEMBER: Don't just vote for the big things like US Congress. Vote in every State and local race down to the smallest and on all the referendums.

* I woke up with basically no spoons Friday. We are talking it took me seven hours of effort to make it into the living room to eat bread slices and dried fruit and hydrate because I couldn't handle even boiling water for soup cups. It took another most of two hours to make it to the desk from the sofa for more hydration before going back bed. Hence very little that wasn't pre-programmed getting done.

I feel like a slacker taking two days off from physio, but it was pretty clear I could do things like make food or do physio Saturday and not both.

* Low sleep quality again Saturday. Livia and I did a lot of reading in bed (with pets). When I reached for the remote above my head to turn the TV on for physio time it fell between the pillows and the headboard, which is a problem because periodic pushing of the mattress back against the headboard requires me moving all the pillows and things off the bed because the extra weight makes it impossible. Anything to do with the mattress is a spoon devouring nightmare. I have no help for changing bedding and it's really a two person job because of the weight of the mattress. The result is, there is currently more space than I like between headboard and mattress.

When I tried to rescue it, it slid further down behind the pillows. Moving is always a risk in this situation, but there was nothing forward. I heard the tell take sound of it hitting the floor the moment I moved to try to get a better grip.

There was nothing for it. Everything had to come off the bed and I was going to have to try to shift the mattress myself. Worse, I had no one with longer arms, so I was going to have to get a dustpan between the slats, awkwardly try to sweep things into it without losing my grip, pick everything out of the dustpan, then pull the dustpan out. More things inevitably fell into the crack of doom during the process, compounding the problem. Sigh.

I had been doing a good job holding the crack closed, as there were only three things in there besides the escaped remote that had fallen from the shelf before I started knocking more things into the hole, plus a small collection of medical packaging. Go me!

I still had to change the fitted sheet as I'd gone this far, which is really right at the edge of possible for my shoulder joints. Then pull more things that had fallen into the crack of doom. Then try to force the mattress back into place alone. Then put everything back. I never really get everything back, small things get misplaced and must be found later.

Even with several hours of rest including two naps and lots of pettins, it took another couple hours for half assed physio, and I keep getting the shakes.

There were all these other things I needed to to today, but likely I'd already eaten a bunch of tomorrow's spoons. Sigh. At least there are clean sheets.

* Monday, I noticed the early stages of an eye infection. My car can't make the distance to the next town where there were appointments open, but they found me one Tuesday. I dropped off library books after and tried to hit the discount grocery in search of five things it turned out they were out of. I did get my second choice for one of them, which wasn't a hardship as both are things I buy on the regular; I was just more in the mood for the other. There were no mushrooms or bags of frozen broccoli. The other two things? Sigh. One they only had a tiny over priced side dish version from another brand instead of two full meals worth from the good brand, so I passed. The other, I got the smallest I could find of a different brand and flavour to test instead of what I actually wanted.

I had started lunch and was putting my meager purchases away, when squirrel appeared, trying to work out how we were going to take the trash out. I proposed once again that we just put the whole thing can and all on the dolly and take it out to the dumpster together that way. We have two working arms between us and it would be a lot easier to each take a handle a dump the tied off bag that way, letting gravity do most of the work, then take the can and dolly back where they go. Squirrel gave in and while it was still annoying, it was far better than any of the alternatives.

I then needed to lie down because I was already pretty much at the end on hobbling about without a really long rest. I did lungs, had lunch, rested a whole bunch more. I did eventually manage a few small household tasks between rests, but I just feel like too little butter on too much bread.

Really, I need to finish putting things away from all the displacement. Really, I need to try the reorganization in the garden, as it will help when planting time comes. These are big exhausting things and one of them, I am not convinced I can do even sitting down and using my feet, but I can't know for sure until I move the rack and give it a try. If it does work, it will take better advantage of the extra sun we have since they pulled the massive bush out and will also give me better access to the far tomato planters.

* Thursday was exhausting and full of too many things and I made two key errors that fucked some things up. All this, plus my ankle kept disjointing, jointing, disjointing, joining so many times I lost count as I slogged painfully about trying and mostly failing to achieve essential tasks. Bonus: Physio tomorrow at entirely The Wrong Time.

* I did make it to physio Friday. My ankle was still bad, but properly in it's socket, which is important as we added a bunch of standing stuff. (Ugh.) We also upgrading a lying down and the sitting exercise. At check in, I saw one of the arm guys and said high. Later on the leg physio mentioned she'd spoken to him about me before we started and he said I was a really hard worker, which is nice to hear.

I made it home and had to lie down for a good long while before making food. Then I did lungs and had another long lie down before sorting forage. When I got up to put forage away, I discovered my legs were just DONE. It would have been a brilliant day to own one of those little lightweight indoor electric chairs. Instead I had a really scary trip to my room for pettins alternating with cuddle naps with Livia for most of the afternoon.

I did eventually make it back out to put away the perishable forage, feed and water Livia and the fish, etc., but it's just really bad tonight. At some point I will have to make more food. *shudder*

I had hoped to do a Friday morning aggregate, but I was just too tired to manage it, which sucks as there are multiple congressional action items it would have been better to start on before the recess.

Remember they deny medical care, clean water, etc. to detainees as a matter of policy, and that this is the prison where they send legal immigrants and people with open asylum cases that have been following the rules and have done nothing wrong, particularly children.

* I ended up involuntarily day shifted part of this past week and still am as of Sunday. I did not do a bunch of phone bureaucracy, I ought to have, but it is A Lot on top of everything else. Unexpectedly, Forage box contained low preparation protein for me Friday. They haven't done this in literally years. It was a full sized field roast wrapped in pastry, which is not ideal, as Feild Roast is very heavy and also really doesn't keep well, as the pastry, while delicious when it's soaked up gravy and has bits of the stuffing fruit on it, hardens and goes stale fast. So it's low effort food, but also you have to eat a lot of it before it starts to get nasty. More than you really want to eat generally.

This had the advantage though of leaving me enough energy after physio to do some sorting in preparation of the big job that is the next phase of putting the tall desk things back, do comprehensive litter changes on Saturday, and combined with randomly day shifted allowed me to do some shifting and weeding in the garden, because in our weird little valley micro-climate, the weeds never really stop.

Not only are the inside daffodils fairly advanced, but I food a bunch of crocuses gamely hoping for Spring outside. The taller ones I knew were happening, but I found some surprise ones in the back that I'm assuming were subsisting in drips from the spearmint planter and were growing around another small pot sitting on top of theirs. I have moved them.

I need to shift a few heavier containers, which I wasn't up to, and I need to weed the far tomato pot on a day when it isn't actively raining and I hadn't exhausted my ability to bend over and my pain resistance weeding other pots.

I had a likely very bad idea for reorganizing out there, in light of the removal of that giant bush that was blocking a lot of light, but if the idea worked it would be really clever. I need to think on it further though, as it would be a major undertaking requiring help.

* I ended up going back out before dark and moving the heavy things. The heavy things were clearly heavier than I should have been lifting and to get the last one in place I had to twist a little, inevitably injuring myself. I feel like I've been through a mangle as this was all to much for the artificial shoulder as well.

I new Monday was going to be strenuous and the pain would leave me short on sleep, so I gave myself a day off from physio. I may hjave to give myselfd Tuesday off because it feels like I've been through a mangle.

I couldn't get back to sleep for pain after about six hours, so Livia and I read almost half an ILL, before I dragged myself out to try to make food for us and do lungs.

The plan was to leave oneish for downtown taxes, with a stop at the pharmacy on the way. Library was either before or after, then pick up tomatoes, lettuce, and cheese on the way home. Doors opened at 1:45. I got there around 1:30 after pharmacy, but with no library because traffic. There was already a line. There were also massive rain slick cement steps. They used to let disabled people park in the upstairs disabled parking, but they refuse to open those doors now for taxes and I've no idea how someone in a wheelchair gets in.

A nice man gave me his seat so I didn't have to sit on the soaked stairs. They'd all watch my painful wobbly ascent with various degrees of alarm. I asked if he was sure and he was. All the standing about in the downstairs hall before they let us start signing in was incredibly painful and pretty much did me in, so I truly was grateful for the porch chair.

There is an elevator down, at least, the lady who'd been behind me when we arrived was kind enough to let me have my place in line back when we gathered in the Hall for interminable orientation.

I was fifth in line signing in, which, with my usual half hourish session would add up to one and a half to two hours under normal conditions. They had six preparers there. I had a shortish library book and my usual short story magazines for back up, because I have zero faith in normal conditions.

My lack of faith was correct. The computer had been mostly down the previous day they were open, which meant everyone on a packed day waited four hours for nothing, so they were given special slips to let them cut line. Many of them had everything but the computer bits completed, which made them faster than average, but there were A lot of them turning up in the first two hours. Also, it turned out two of the preparers were trainees. Literally one couple without slips got in on the first batch. No one else without a slip was seen until 4:30PM. The trainees went solo around 4PM They close at six. Most of the people waiting gave up and went home. A lot of them wewre furious, but I got why all this was no one's fault and I've never seen the point of getting angry at people trying to make the best of a bad situation.

I waited. I had stuff to read, I did not want to come back and do it again tomorrow from scratch. I also knew they knew how simple my paperwork was and I could do math. I figured they'd likely squeeze me in if I was patient.

I was next in line by five between people getting taken in to be worked on and people giving up. I was in a scootch before 5:15 with two people behind me. It ended up taking 40 minutes as it took extra long to get the double check as the person doing that was helping a trainee and it took ages. The other people did get squeezed in, including the nice lady who let me back in line even though the elevator was slow. The preparer took me through the labrinth to the wheelchair ramp exit once I made her understand that yes, I could take the elevator up, but then I'd have to walk down two flights of rain slick cement steps and please was there a ground floor way out?

It was pitch black out there and all in shadow, and the black macadam was uneven. There was a weird wobble in my crutch handle, but I was so busy not falling on ground I basically couldn't see in the rain on the very long hobble up and around to the lower parking lot, that I didn't stop to examine it and I was so focused on just trying to get to the library and not crying from the pain, that I forgot to examine it in the car. This was a mistake.

Two steps from my car at the library, the handle gave way. The metal piece was just gone, likely lost during the long hobble in the dark. No point in going back to look as I now didn't have a viable crutch and would be searching mostly unlighted shadowy places and if it was lost in the labrith, I'd be locked out. Sigh. I had a dangerous time dealing with the small stairs up and down to and from the library drop box. (They were kicking everyone out when I arrived). I now have to go back to pick up a book. I don't want to do it, but also I now need groceries I couldn't get because of the whole crutch came apart thing. I could theoretically search the parking lot, if I came early enough. If I hit the right window they might even let me inside, but I also have a zoom meeting thing I have to do Tuesday at five and I'm not convinced I remember how to do zoom.

I feel terrible. Really, this is what the emergancy pain meds are for, but I low key hallucinate on tramadol now and next time I need surgury it will really be hell as I likely won't even get a week of pain relief. Each pill I take now brings me one step closer to can't have anything but celebrex and tylanol after surgury.

Why must everything be this hard?

* I had trouble getting back to sleep, so ended up reading for a couple hours until I could manage it, then crashed HARD. As a result, I couldn't both do physio and get out to do the stuff I was supposed to do Tuesday before the zoom meeting thing at five. It was still a close shave as it turned out I hadn't added zoom to the laptop after the old one died, plus I kept Finding Problems around the apartment.

Still, I made it to my seat with tea in time. I defended Halloween decorations when I got my turn. Them: "Our intention isn't to ban Halloween." Me: "That's not what the wording says. Halloween is not a federal national holiday." " They are passing the new rules anyway, but they promised to amend for me and someone else with a very valid suggestion. They are probably going to allow people to to dry clothes out side for one day, but there will be more debate. Plus there was a bunch of alarming stuff about elevators and fire system and talk of bringing back the fucking gates.

I really am going to need to run next time there is an opening, aren't I. *facepalm*

On a related note, I suppose I need to learn how to do emojis in zoom as it's pretty much required.

They have decided to restart Squirrel on Physio for the mangled rotator cuffs for two months to see if they can avoid surgery. (Different physio, as they don't want to worsen the tearing). It sounds like squirrel's pay may be sorted out, but we'll know for sure if it comes by week's end.

* So the last week or two I've been harassed twice a day by a caller I was suspecting of being an insurance company pretending to be Medicare. They usually do this scam November - December, but I'm pretty good at spotting insurance companies doing this and they were being the right sort of subtle shady. Problem is, sometimes medicare doesn't bother properly stating who they are and why they are calling either, which means I couldn't block them without verifying and they kept talking over me or trying to forward me every time I tried to ask questions, which again suggested insurance company scammers, as they are technically legitimate companies, so they'd rather deflect, lie by omission, stonewall questions, and use carefully scripted deceptive phrasing than out right lying like regular scammers. Sigh.

So they call every day at too early in the morning and again in the afternoon or early evening. Sometimes, they'd hit right as I was leaving for, say, the dentist as they did on Monday or when I was on my way to the bathroom or too sleepy to fight. Sometimes they'd talk over me and or try to transfer.

The air quality's been bad whenever it's not raining. We think there must be a substrata burn somewhere and when there isn't enough airflow it pools in our little valley. I'm a lung patient and the air quality situation is just exhausting and makes everything harder including sleep.

It took ages to get to sleep and I was just slipping into REM when the assholes called again. Headachey and exhausted I snapped "Identify yourself" in the teacher command voice I used to use to stop middle school boys in their tracks in Spring, and it must have hit the caller right in the hind brain, because she instinctively obeyed. Some fucking insurance company I never heard of, which may or may not exist. I gave the do not call schpiel and hung up before she had time to recover.

At which point I realized I'd forgotten the call blocker code again, something that never could have happened before Biden improved the spam call situation in the US. I used to be limited to 20 blocked numbers, which I would cycle through as one of them was a time share auto-dialler bank with 15 or so numbers and the police Union charity scam had 8-12 at various points, plus the fireman scam, plus the your computer is hacker scam, plus the IRS is sending you to prison scam, plus the cancer charity scam, plus the burglars in your neighborhood scam, plus assorted Social Security and Medicare phishers, etc., etc..

Thanks to Biden I only need to block a number every couple of months and I'm no longer capped on how many scammers I can block at once.

So I try a few I think might be it. They aren't, which means bathroom trip then looking it up on line. By the time I blocked Asshole Archer Insurance Scammers I am very awake and angry, so they successfully stole about an hour and a half of sleep.

A few hours later I wake up to the smell of something burning. Not charcoal or wood fire, but the bad one you get when something with wiring is on fire. Fuck! So I'm up fast. I shut off the strip that run the air filter and fan. The smell is filling the room. Nothing is visibly on fire, but still. The smell is strongest by the fan, but it could also be leaking in from outside. I check the office space heater, which I know is unplugged, but the smell is barely there in the main area, so fan or outside. I poke my head outside and the air at ground level is a dingy yellow brown and the smell is Brutal. So either something big burning far away or something smaller, very, very close. I hope no one is hurt.

So no fan to sleep with, which added to smoke in my room makes me exhausted and hung over feeling. Plus everything hurts. It hurts so, so much, and even after lung treatment I'm snails' pace and not breathing well. Bonus: I had to lend Squirrel my sinus clearing thingie and the second one is now missing, so I can't even drain my sinuses. (It was an emergency. They got corn stuck up there. I have trained them to ask me first if they need a tool or have an non-ER grade medical situation, because I usually have a solution in a drawer somewhere). Squirrel, after recovering from the self waterboarding horror that is manual drainage: Wow! This feels amazing!

I gave myself a day off from physio, and I'm still struggling not to cry and/or throw up if I have to stand or move around more than a minute.

Today would be a great day not to be allergic to my emergency pain meds. Ugh.

* Squirrel's results came back, and it's way worse than previously thought. They have three rotator cuff tears, one quite large, plus that locked shoulder thing and some shoulder joint deterioration. All physio has stopped because everything is so fragile. They are going for a consult and we expect surgery for rotator cuff repair. Let us hope it is not even more dire.

If they hadn't paid out of pocket for a second opinion, they would be even more fucked right now. So very fucked.

I am worried about what happens when they are fully laid up after surgery, but that is likely a February or March problem.

Some of their back pay came, as it is work related and the hospital stopped fighting compensation. This is good as things were getting pretty desperate.

In other news, While sorting out call blocking from Asshole Archer Insurance, I found a missed call from last Friday with yet more Surprise Emergency paperwork. Luckily, it was some of the same documentation from Monday plus a thing from the special folder I keep handy for things like this. (The only time since it's institution 16ish years ago that I haven't known where the folder was to the inch was when it was boxed for the Great Living room/Office Migration.)

I still had to drag myself out into rush hour traffic Wednesday morning as it needed to be delivered before month's end and sooner is better than later. I used the tiny half secret satellite office I usually do so the delivery it's self took about 5 minutes total in the office including buzzing for reception, pleasantries and xeroxing, but the getting there was extra because not only rush hour, but a lane of the highway was closed and I couldn't get off at the ramp just before the sign. Stop and go to the next off just before the closure. Sigh. Back was fine of course, as south usually is in the morning.

Then I made a sandwich, did lungs, Checked a couple things online, closed things down for sleep, and bathed. Livia was not best pleased as she had wanted me to go to bed instead of doing bureaucracy, but I don't fuck around with threats against the benefits that only barely keep us afloat as it is. She was even more distressed by me not coming right to bed, but while the air was much improved, I don't want to carry allergens to bed in my hair.

This ate nearly all the Wednesday spoons, but I did eventually force the Wednesday physio with looooong rests. I was very lucky New Millennial was here to feed me. I don't have much special vegetarian soup cups left, and I definitely don't want soup cups and crackers twice in one day, it is bad for morale. (I am having soup cups for second meal). I already burned through the emergency bars, because physio plus all the other things besetting me really are using all the spoons every day on the regular.

I am worried because car tax didn't come. After all there was no warning on the other stuff this week. I should go in person, I know, I know. Not this week though. I really need there to be No More Things this week. Phone bureaucracy is piling up and I am exhausted.

Anyway, here is hoping they can schedule squirrel's shoulder surgery soon and that it is just a cuff repair and not a nightmare replacement situation like mine. They are enough older than me, that odds are recovery would be even worse. shudder It probably isn't, but you see how our shoulder luck has been, and how fast the Squirrel situation escalated.
