Poem – Sonnet

Awake! Awake! Awake! The waits been long.
For summer’s here, whispered from July’s lips.
Heard o’er every hill and dale, love’s happy song,
Her coming dances in soft silken skips.

See! See her, see her, gowned in hues of green,
Her head adorned with jewelled floral crown
Each sun-filled breath gifted by dawn’s new queen
Flooding the sky, weald fair and rolling down.

Each sweep each touch so soft upon the fields
A gentle brush banishing winter’s grey.
How each soft kiss clings, how each cold heart yields
How each leaf, each wild bloom regal holds sway.

The wait is done, so far it seemed to be,
Awake! Awake! How summer sets one free.

Image Prompt – Flash Fiction – Story – The Tale of Guy Hodgson by Goff James

Amidst the screaming steel and the collapsing facades of brick and mortar, Guy Hodgson knelt frozen in the centre of the small garden behind his terraced home. He realised with a clarity that bordered on the transcendent that the past had evaporated. The faces of his mother, the warmth of a kitchen hearth, and the dusty golden light of a childhood summer were nothing more than flickers of a dying candle—memories that burned briefly, searing his mind before being extinguished by the encroaching numbing darkness.

There was no longer a future to calculate, no plans to forge, and no salvation to bargain for. The luxury of “later” had been incinerated. As the roar of the firestorm grew deafening, drowning out the frantic prayers of his neighbours, Guy drew a shallow, soot-filled breath. He pushed aside the phantom weight of what he had lost and the crushing finality of what he would never become. There was only the immediate, jagged present—a heartbeat, a tremor, a flash—and in that final, terrifying second, Guy Hodgson understood that there would be no tomorrow.

Poetry … is the revelation of a feeling that the poet believes to be interior and personal which the reader recognises as ones own.

The Art and Wonder of Poetry – Julie’s Cafe – A Poem by Goff James – Quotation

Life begins after coffee.

The image is inspired by the poem Julie's Cafe. It depicts a lively café interior with several groups of people engaged in various activities, such as reading, chatting, and enjoying coffee. The space features warm wooden floors, exposed brick walls adorned with framed artwork, and hanging string lights that create a welcoming ambiance. A barista behind the counter smiles while interacting with customers, preparing drinks near a display of assorted pastries and baked goods. The café’s large window lets in natural light, and there are plants and shelves filled with books and jars adding a homey touch to the setting.
Poem
Julie's Cafe by Goff James
Castle door ancient creaks.
Stone walls whisper tales untold.
Museum grand, paintings and antiques.
As one deeper dives, a softer scene unfolds.

Beyond the foyer's echoing space,
Nestled rearward, hid from sight.
Julie's Café, a welcoming place.
A pleasant haven bright.

Warmth swoons from the open door.
A place to rest, a tranquil shore.

I follow the sound, a tapestry spun,
A joyous song, a gentle hum,
Fragments of voices, laughter, fun,
A mushrooming, harmonious sum.

Blurred notes that rise and softly bend,
Playful whimsies, taking flight,
Muted whispers, sweetly blend,
Spilling out, into the light.

The corridor narrows, draws me near,
Then the scent...a symphony clear.

Coffee's deep, dark, rich allure,
Freshly baked scones golden beam,
Cakes filled with promises, pure,
Strawberry jam and clotted cream

Sandwiches, cheese and ham, made to greet.
Toast and beans, jacket potatoes, piping glow,
Salads on china plates laid out neat.
Soup steaming warmly a comfort to know,

Lollipops, ice creams, bubble gums and sweets
Lemonades and many other children’s treats.

A fresh scone purchased and a coffee small.
Then, off with my coat and hat from the day.
In a corner anew, I settle and sprawl
And share in the chatter where leisure holds sway.
Friends and customers enjoy coffee and conversation in a warm, inviting café

Flowers radiant bloom
Gardens robed in summer’s kiss
Love’s sweetness lingers

Poem Attribution – Goff James – Flowers Radiant Bloom

Copyright (c) 2026 Goff James – All Rights Reserved

The poem consists of three lines, each with a maximum of five syllables, adhering to the traditional structure of a haiku.

The poem focuses on the beauty of the natural world during the summer, with its flowers blooming and gardens in full bloom.

There is a suggestion that the beauty and joy depicted are fleeting, as the haiku does not provide a full picture of the summer’s duration but rather focuses on a moment.

The “radiant bloom” suggests a vibrant and full life.

“Robed in summer’s kiss” indicates a place that has been touched by the warmth and vitality of the summer season.

The “garden robed in summer’s kiss” metaphorically personifies the garden, suggesting a human-like experience of the summer season’s touch.

The haiku leaves out certain details, relying on ones imagination to fill in the blanks.

It is peaceful and serene, highlighting the beauty of the summer and the fleeting joy it brings.

The Art of Poetry – The Wonder of Writing a Poem – Sonnet – Young Love – Hope and Struggle – Exploring Vulnerability – The Passage of Time – Poetic Reflection – A Tender Heart – A Poem by Goff James

The image depicts a large, glowing red heart suspended in the centre of a turbulent, stormy sky. The heart appears to be made of glass or crystal, emanating a warm light from its core, and is partially engulfed in vibrant orange flames. Dark, swirling clouds filled with rain and lightning surround the heart, creating a dramatic contrast between the fiery warmth of the heart and the cold intensity of the storm. Below, jagged mountain peaks rise through the mist, enhancing the ominous atmosphere of the scene.

Image Prompt – Poem – Sonnet – A Tender Heart

Poem – Sonnet

A tender heart, with no shield, beats so fast,
Young love’s bright flames, a flicker, then are gone.
The world’s rough edges, sullen overcast,
And life constant e’er pulls one on and on.

Such dreams once held, like mist, begin to fray,
The easy laughter fades to weary sighs.
Responsibilities take hold each day,
Ones busy life obscures what once did rise.

The gentle touch, the whispered, sweet delight,
Each lose their power as the years go passed.
One stumbles onwards, in the fading light,
And holds on tightly, hoping love will last.

Yet through it all, a quiet hope remains,
To mend the heart and soothe the haunting pains.

Poem Attribution – Goff James –

The poem is written in the traditional classical sonnet form, which consists of 14 lines with a rhyme scheme of ABAB CDCD EFEF GG.

The structure is designed to build a narrative and emotional arc, with the final couplet providing a resolution or a moment of clarity.

The Vulnerability of Love:

It explores how this tender love is contrasted with the harsh realities of the world.

The poem repeatedly mentions the passing of time, with references to “flicker[ing] flames,” “years go passed,” and “fading light.”

The Struggle of Adulthood:

It reflects on how the simplicity of young love is replaced by complexity and stress.

Despite the difficulties and the loss of innocence, the poem ends on a note of quiet hope, suggesting that even in the face of pain and struggle, there is still a chance for healing and comfort.

The Tender Heart:

The Bright Flames of Love:

The World’s Rough Edges:

The Fading Light:

The literary devices used in the poem include –

The “tender heart” and “bright flames of love” are metaphors for the delicate and intense nature of love.

The use of the imperative mood (“beat,” “begin to fray,” “lose their power”) creates a sense of urgency and reinforces the actions taking place in the poem.

The repetition of the “f” sound in “flicker[ing] flames” and “fading light” creates a rhythmic effect and draws attention to the theme of time.

Here’s how the tone changes through the poem:

The opening lines are hopeful and perhaps a bit whimsical, with a focus on the young and unguarded heart.

The middle section becomes more somber and melancholic, reflecting the speaker’s contemplation of the passage of time and the challenges of adult life.

The final couplet offers a touch of hope and resilience, suggesting that despite the struggles, there remains an underlying optimism that things can be mended and life can continue to have meaning.
