I don't want to rush into this and it may be that support for RestClient takes the place of REST Assured support. With the limited resources available to work on REST Docs, I'm not sure it would be wise to support both.

What is the recommended migration path for projects that use rest docs with REST Assured so far? To be honest, I'm a bit lost with the documentation and I would like to upgrade to spring boot 4 with the least amount of friction.

There's no ideal path forward at the moment, unfortunately. When REST Docs 4.0 was released there was no version of REST Assured that was compatible with Groovy 5 so support had to be dropped. Using MockMvc or WebTestClient instead of REST Assured would allow you to upgrade to REST Docs 4 but that may require more effort that you can justify.

I was asking because you mentioned RestClient above, but if I saw it right this is a 'we could add support in the future'.

I'm pretty unopinionated about those choices, and when I started my project I somehow assumed REST Assured was the 'default' choice, not sure where I got that impression from.

I am looking for information on which of those is the most common option, there does not seem to be a recommendation in the docs.

Judging by downloads, the most common option is spring-restdocs-mockmvc. There's no recommendation in the docs as the expectation is that users will select the option the suits their personal preferences and, perhaps, their existing tests.
