Announcement: Changes to GitHub Copilot Individual PlansImportant April 24, 2026: We have updated the main body of this post to answer frequently asked questions. We will continue to edit as more information becomes available. We've recently announced that we’re making the following changes to GitHub Copilot’s Individual plans to protect the experience for existing customers: pausing new sign-ups, tightening usage limits, and adjusting model availability. We know these changes are disruptive, and we want to be clear about why we're making them, and how they will affect you. Here’s what’s changing and why:

If you hit unexpected limits or these changes just don’t work for you, you can cancel your Pro or Pro+ subscription and receive a refund for the time remaining on your current subscription. ℹ️ Instructions are included in the FAQ below. Can existing customers change plans?While new sign-ups are paused, users with existing plans can still migrate between paid plans.
3. I've hit my seven-day limit - what do I do?Auto will continue to work once you've hit your 7-day limit. We're aware of some errors and are actively investigating those flagged in this thread. Thank you for reporting them. Starting June 1, users will have monthly included usage (just like they do today with PRUs). However, all model usage will incur AI Credit consumption. There are no options to continue using Copilot without waiting for the included usage to reset, enabling additional spend, or upgrading. 4. Why am I hitting rate limits sooner?New rate limits are part of this change, including further restrictions on individual rates. We’re also adding more transparent rate-limit tracking, so it’s easier to see when you’re approaching your limits. We do not have an ETA, yet when this will ship. 5. Why was Opus removed from Copilot Pro?Opus-family models have been removed from Copilot Pro. Rate limits that would be required to keep Opus sustainable on Pro would result in a worse overall experience than using a capable model without those limits. Users would likely hit their cap very quickly. 6. Can I get an exception or workaround?At this time, we’re not able to offer exceptions or workarounds for this change. Copilot Free remains available for signups, and existing users will not be removed. 🎒 GitHub Education and Student Specific Questions7. Why can't I sign up for Copilot Student right now?New signups for Copilot Student are currently paused while we work to provide a more reliable experience for all users. If you already have access, it will remain active. A few important notes:

9. I renewed my student coupon early and lost access to Copilot Student. Is that expected?Renewing your student coupon early should not remove your Copilot Student access. If you are having trouble, please contact us. 10. I'm newly eligible for Copilot Student but have never activated it. Can I sign up now?At this time, new activations of Copilot Student, Pro, and Pro+ are paused. Your GitHub Education verification is active and has not been removed. The pause affects the ability to activate Copilot Student or a Copilot paid plan. When signups resume, you will be able to activate the Education benefit if you are still eligible. In the meantime, Copilot Free remains available for signups. We do not have an estimated timeframe to share yet for when the pause will end. ran out of the entirety of my Claude Haiku 4,5 Rate Limit, SUPER early into trying to use Copilot to finish a piece of my Phoenix Point Modding project - twice, first on trying to use Agent for assistance, ran out in a few messages, then just a "chat" asking tips from Claude Haiku - it ran dry after trying to process needing assistance with a rather Complex modding question. all on X1 and for sole reason, of it being a Complex Project when I tried to use Free Plan, expecting a positive Outcome -- and it was "just" reading a large Modding Git as secondary supplement -- nevermind that only thing I actually got, was couple Pseudocode Segments, so those are of VERY limited usefulness, too. |

I in first place -- jumped in coz my Deepseek glitched out and lost access to Web Search API, meaning manually poking at the Git pages for larger Mod, only to get duped out like this -- at least it DID manage to make a Pseudocode Stub that was useful to feed to my Deepseek for moving the Project forward |

This is so outrageous and insane that it borders on abuse. Imagine offering a product and, halfway through, while you're PAYING, they remove your already expensive product—you've already spent a lot—and you still don't have access to it anymore. It's utter nonsense. |

Imagine this is done on day one of the subscription. You are promises a month of X and then on the first day you only get Y. And then you get told "you can always cancel it if you don't like it". Yeah. That's the bare minimum and borders on false advertising. Oh well it was probably covered on page 461 of some TOS. If you struggle then do a batter job at communicating changes. I don't need to ask an AI that tells me to go here to see its gone all tits up. You have the channels to let people know this better. |

Agreed. I was also thinking that I probably made a mistake of not opting to purchase the yearly subscription before hand expecting the new policy shouldn't be affecting the agreements and contracts made before the change. Thats how it should be. This is purely a breach of contract, isn't it? |

Agreed, as a solo dev, copilot pro was a very good, cheap, and useful product. Alongside the frustration of these new awsome rate limits, I've also lost the most useful model. (yay). I'm not paying microsoft $40 just because they could not be bothered to use some of their billions to keep the service going, and people happy. Nope. Wonder what their PR team is going to do about this. I suppose I might as well try and get a good gpu and go local..... |

Yep... I saw this coming, but it's disappointing to see you soft-deprecating the service to nudge us towards the door. I suppose per-request billing wasn't profitable... I really liked Copilot, and even though I have a paid subscription to Claude, I preferred to use Copilot as it is flexible enough and allows you to change models. This is a kick in the nuts. |

nowhere near enough to keep paying. i have a year sub that i converted to pro+ and this bs about the weekly token cap is clearly BAIT-AND-SWITCH. why TF would I pay microsoft/github $40/month for something I get free or $10/month (minimax, glm, qwen, etc). minimax has been far more stable than anthropic or copilot. there are already many models that beat opus 4.6 on avg benchmarks, and as you all know opus is widely seen as king. (it isn't though. pull up pinchbench dot com and click to sort by avg score, which if you are intelligent it is immediately obvious why that matters more than the outlier "best ever" that happened on that one test one time. notice how many beat opus. (currently 3 but this varies)) |

You can access some of those models through tools like Ollama and OpenCode Go, and if you use Z.ai’s GLM 5.1, the pricing can be very reasonable for the amount of work you get out of it. In my case, with a heavy multi-subagent workflow, I can usually push it close to the limit and still get a lot of usable time before the 5-hour reset window. Most people will probably never hit that level of usage, so for average users it can stretch quite a bit further. I bought the yearly Pro plan for around $145 back in December, and last I checked it looked closer to $180. I locked it in early because I suspected the price would go up later. As for the model quality, I would compare GLM more to the Sonnet 4.5 style of model behavior. Earlier versions felt closer to that, and while they can sometimes get a bit verbose, they are still genuinely useful models to work with. I have not yet put 5.1 through my longest workflows, so I would not overstate that part yet, but the early results are promising. OpenCode and Ollama also make these models easier to test, but the real answer is still the same: do the math for your own workflow. That is what matters most. Pricing only looks good or bad once you measure it against how many hours of real work you can actually get out of it. |

I fully understand the need to make changes like these (although I disagree with the way it was done). That being said, the BIGGEST issue I have is not the fact that Opus 4.7 costs 7.5x but the fact that it's only on MEDIUM THINKING. Not only is 4.7 a serious regression to 4.5 and 4.6 but as a Max user on CC, I never run Opus on medium thinking as it's just a complete waste of tokens. Use Opus with High or Max and Sonnet for anything else. I would highly suggest the team enable High mode for 4.7 on Copilot... that's the least they could do. |

This is tremendously terrible behaviour GH. Nothing more than a money grab once again, we are already paying 3X the tokens for the model and do so sparingly. This bait-and-switch is completely unacceptable. You silently killed Opus 4.6 which completely broke my agent coding workflows and CLI tasks right when I needed them most. First you stripped the student access, then you introduced opaque hourly + weekly rate limits that just making the AUTO model throw 401 token expired errors, and now we are suddenly expected to pay $40/month!!!! just to get a restricted 4.7 locked on medium thinking? We subscribed for a reliable dev tool, not a rug pull. If your infrastructure can't handle the load, don't sell the tier. :D |

@psimsa I have... Before I make any final decision, I'm waiting to see if Microsoft reverses course. If I do rip off the band-aid, I'll gladly share the BYOK math once the migration is done, but you're missing the point. It isn't just about trying to save $10 a month; it's about predictable performance. Right now, losing the unthrottled reasoning of Opus 4.6 and being forced to burn tokens 2.5x faster (jumping from a 3x to a 7.5x multiplier) for a degraded, "Medium thinking" model just isn't worth the price of the subscription. Whether Microsoft is taking a loss on compute or not, silently rug-pulling your paying users isn't the solution. Honesty and transparency should still matter. In the meantime, considering reactivating my Cursor subscription and finding other workarounds to get reliable access to the models I've built workflows around and have come to depend on. |

Unless I was unlucky with recent 2-3 requests (although it was gpt5.4 medium so should eat like 1-2% max), or github being slow (both possible) I think they reduced the total number of requests as well. I have been at ~60-70% and im at 80%. MAYBE I AM INCORRECT. BUT. Without any number from GitHub I WILL assume I am correct and pretend to be angry, while looking for alternative. Google at least has balls to show you all the graphs of your usage. Here? I can only trust that they are not doing anything, while staring at "%" |

Removed Github Student Pack -> People transfered to Github Copilot Pro (Free trials) -> Paused all free trials -> People who were still going to pay afterwards upgrades to Github Copilot Pro -> Removes the top models (Opus 4.5 & Opus 4.6) that most people used from Github Copilot Pro -> ALSO removes/replace Opus 4.5 & Opus 4.6 with Opus 4.7 with more than double the request cost on the more expensive plan... Github, this is as anti-consumer as you can possibly get within the span of a few weeks. I get you might be losing a bit of money, but straight up removing and replacing the models and plans that people are using/paying for is a dumb move. There are guaranteed tons of people that will 100% cancel their subscription and move to Claude or OpenAI's plans instead. The main reason I used Github Copilot Pro was because you provided the top Claude models in VS Code with simple integration along with other models such as GPT 5.4. However, removing that also removes peoples incentive to continue their subscription. Why would people not just pay Claude and use their Claude Code with integrated SKILL marketplace and a bunch of useful features instead? |

I am in a simliar situation like you are. First shocked and angry. Now I also consider other options. My first try was to use other models in Copilot. It seemed to be like in early times. I wanted to change coding logic (Flutter) and gave the same instructions to other models. Nothing felt like Opus 4.6. But I cannot compare anymore. I just find Gemini 3.1 Pro nice to use. Additionally I installed Codex today. May be more people can write their ways too. |

Anthropic is good but expensive. First of all you don't always need those top models. Use the right model for the right task. Optimize your agents, skills, rules, context etc. to get the best results with the least amount of tokens. There are some good models that come close to the Claude's for a fraction of the costs, so you have a choice. Of course your employers should pay for the right tooling. |

Brother I sent a ticket AND email before upgrading to avoid losing my EDU plan, so far 5 days no response aside from bot so. The future is only hosting your LLM if you got the VRAM or API as prices are also increasing to match exactly so the frontend and integration will be the only A vs B. If I could afford a 24GB GPU or even a Blackwell Pro 6000 MaxQ with 96GB you would never need anyone's service, no rates, no API no restricted IDE nothing. But for now Github is the least crappy one with maybe Google given usage per $ and service stability. |

Well I also have been on this very boat the entire day looking at every AI option because i need something that is fairly priced and actually is usable inside an IDE at least on par with VSCode and GitHub Chat combo, and let me tell you, NOBODY has what GitHub offers at the same time. Either you deal with very inconsistent usage that wildly swings based on working hours (like OpenAI, Cursor, Anthropic), a terrible and very buggy Extension in every major IDE (also OpenAI), credits that run out fast (Cursor), being out of usage fast (Anthropic), CLIs with Security Risks (OpenAI), being unable to use 3rd party tools with a subscription (all of them) or simply lacking any coding IDE integration made to work as an agent with local files (Google). And usage issues persist even on plans that cost 100 USD mind you, not even for entry only plans. This is not necessarily extensive or true for every case, but after searching this is the picture I got. AND even if competitors of GitHub Copilot are "faster" or "better", you will get less done. It's all proportional, cost vs usage vs quality of integrations vs context An API fixes all of them, but unless you barely use it then the much higher cost and "per token" payment will cost you WAY more. If you can and have the V-RAM you have to self host a model, that is the way of the future. If not an API will have to be the way as prices go up and the usage method gets closer to APIs (like June GitHub changes). It is a huge mess, but only GitHub Copilot currently is the ideal balance that is still usable, especially with Pro+. Google though is NOT to be ignored as they are on a train to attract customers from other big 3 and while their integrations are basic, their own Web Based IDE can be better and more generous so try it if you can (though beware as the free tier is less privacy-oriented). |

This is anti-competitive behavior and Illegal as hell. I am reaching out to my elected officials and I suggest you do the same. These people have a history of monopolistic behavior and they are warehousing the codebase of most of the world. This is not a game and not entirely up to just GitHub. Call your representatives and let them know you think this is monopolistic and anti competitive. This is not big biz, this is dangerous arrogance. |

So i'm a pro+ annual subscriber. I paid my subscription in March 2026. Looking for some advice... It's a little confusing if they will allow me to do this.. cancel github pro+ annual for refund, then sign up for pro monthly starting june 1st. Because right now they've "Paused" subscriptions? |

Well from what I saw June Onwards it's going be be practically API priced without API flexibility or priority, as models will cost per token In and Out. Their prices per M(illion) tokens In and Out (yes they are seaprately counted normally) are the exact same as OpenRouter (an API aggregator that has every model you need, not just a few like Github) so if you get your own API key it's way better at that point because you get to run models inside ANY IDE or extension you want, whereas Github is still locked to their backend and limitations. I strongly suggest to stick with what you got now (annual) if you want to keep using it as long as possible at its advantageous pricing, until expiry. Do NOT leave the current Annual for a monthly because even if the models use very big multipliers, its still I dare say 100% guaranteed to cost less then the equivalent API because the huge number of Out Tokens you will generate and their cost is absorbed as "weekly rate" rather than you paying for every single one out of pocket. Monthly will instead switch you to the API format so you will have to abandon it basically. And if you have to use API cost, then might aswell just get it from aggregators which cost the same, do NOT expire the money you load into them unlike a subscription and have way more models in one Key even. These are the also the reasons that likely pushed them to switch from subscription with "usage" to that API-like system, because it currently can be upwards of 2X cheaper then an API. Basically Github will become a simple Wrapper, a frontend that is restricted but costs the same as equally priced API. |

Highly doubt that
27x for Opus 4.7 means $1.08 per request. Yes, this might be cheap if we have a huge context with the request-based pricing. But since Copilot is switching to usage-based anyway, we'd better get used to maintaining a smaller context per conversation. And if you well-plan the context size, $1 per request is quite terrible, compared to what Claude Pro gets you. (Let alone other premium subscriptions from various providers) IMHO, at the very least, Copilot should not just be yet another API router. It's still some kind of subscription service, no? |

Yeah, they are essentially saying pro+ annual will suck for the rest of the year. i'm more pissed about 9x for sonnet actually. and it's hilarious they are advertising costs for opus 4.5 when they got rid of that already. |

I have 30% usage remaining on my plan for the month (annual pro plan) i built my own thing that uses premium api keys and an array of free cloud sources and any local models my machines can power (other options if i decide to upgrade hardware), its still in the works but it has auto model switching and fallbacks and model task assignments and fleet mode and MoE etc.. its a work in progress but im glad i was building this thing all along. why? because ever since 2 months before the 300 request per month limit was implemented ive been building tools to allow me to do what i knew would be taken away one day or went up in price from github copilot...if anyone wants to help me develop it feel free to check out the repo its coming along, many bugs but im working on it. i mean this stuff is basically magic bro it was only a matter of time before it was cornered...no pun intended in relation to guys on the corner in the 80s during that one epidemic... https://github.com/Ileices/personal_IDE

To be honest, this is pure cope. I used claude code to do the work of one sonnet prompt ($0.033 with copilot) and it costed $6. API pricing is brutal, and we all know that anthropic sub pricing is heavily subsidized. It was great while it lasted, but I will be migrating after this month. It was hard to justify the $10 because I couldn't spend half of it. I've done more with this one project but 5.4 xhigh and sonnet 4.6 high are enough. Regardless, enshittification needs to die in a hole. I hope one day all of these companies are tried for these abysmal policies. |
