Xviewer very slow to open photos

Very slow in opening photos

Steps to reproduce

clicking on image file

Expected behaviour
takes up CPU for a minute or two before opening. often closes itself before opening. Clicking on file several times sometimes will eventually open several windows of the image five minutes later.

Other information
Have considered installing Eye of Gnome as Xviewer seems to be taken from it, but don't know if it would work in MATE. Gimp opens photos faster (often less than 3 seconds), but seems silly to open photos for viewing with it.

I have been bitten by this, and I think I found the cause.

I ran:
strace -f -ff -o output -s 10000 -t -v xviewer file_that_took_long_to_open

And noticed that statx is run for each of the images that exist in the same directory than file_that_took_long_to_open. That directory has around 20000 images. The calling of statx on all the files added a 50 seconds delay to the opening.

I'm no Linux programmer, but from what I read, statx seems to be slow.

When opening an image in xviewer from nemo, all filepaths in the same directory are passed to the xviewer call. If one replicates the same call from a terminal, the image opens immediately. Doing the same with just the desired image is slow.

This is still an issue, opening xviewer (3.4.1) from terminal has the same effect.
In folders with a lot of images checking all other images in the folder at opening time is very slow. Could whatever this is used for be limited to folders with fewer than some number of images or configurable on the command line? The disable gallery flag does not solve this.

Still seems to be an issue on 3.4.6. Does appear to be an issue when there's many images in the directory.

Pix - instantaneous
Xviewer - 10s or more.

Still a problem. 6 seconds to open a photo is a real issue.

Same issue. Especially slow on network mounts.
Takes 2+ seconds on a folder with 22 images.
And 8 seconds with 90 images.
