I feel we need less fields in the general group, but it's fine to land and iterate with the addition of more fields.

Thanks! I think this is fine to land as v1 and iterate. It mirrors many of the architectural decisions we have discussed for taxonomies and some of the follow ups will also follow suit, like the REST PR for taxonomies, etc..
It would be good to add the follow ups (in your description) as tasks in the tracking issue.

Should we drop "show in REST API" control since disabling it might break stuff?
Yes, please! I can confirm that disabling this option in Secure Custom Fields breaks most in-editor stuff. I would consider this option as obsolete as I would consider a "show in PHP API" one 😛
We register a private wp_user_post_type CPT holds one record per user-defined post type, with the slug, status, and a JSON-encoded config stored in the standard post fields.
May I ask out of curiosity what other architectural options were considered? For example, what are the benefits of storing the fields in post content vs post meta?

Thanks, yes, this a TODO item in the tracking issue already: #77600
We chose the content mostly because it has been the easiest to move forward. We are considering moving some fields to post meta, to facilitate filtering, for example. Some of that has landed for taxonomies recently as part of the work to have a dedicated REST controller in #77697. We're yet to explore that for post types, since this interface landed very recently. There's a dedicated TODO item for that as well. |

Thanks for the context, @tyxla. As you know, I'm exploring with @mcsf a CPT-related project soon to be open source, but still in alpha, and we want to keep an eye on the current progress towards core CPT management to avoid duplicating work. In our early explorations, we considered different approaches and landed on storing field settings in post meta, hence my question. Great work, keep us in the loop! |

Let's chat at some point. While we focus a lot on the management of the actual entity types (post types, taxonomies), the surface area for custom fields in those entities hasn't been explored, and it's one of the most substantial areas for development (it's one of the phases we defined in #77600). This could be a really great area for overlap. |

Great one! I do think it would be better for performance if this was in stored wp_options and autoloaded rather than a separate query to the posts table. |

@PoeHaH thanks for the feedback. FWIW, options is exactly the approach I took in my initial approach #77487, and I don't think we've necessarily finalized the storage mechanism. Since this work is experimental, it's still subject to architectural changes, and when we get to evaluating the performance more deeply, we might rethink some of the decisions. |

If this is going to be useful to a lot of people who actually use custom post types, it needs a way to store these definitions outside of the database in the filesystem, and in a place that is version controlled / commitable. The way that ACF json definitions for field groups work is a good example. |

Note that we're not removing the core post type / taxonomy registration APIs - they will always be there if you need them. It may very well remain the preferred way for developers to manage the definitions. I still think this is a useful suggestion to consider. In addition to storing definitions in code and in the database, I don't see why we shouldn't have a way to import/export them. Note that with the current architecture, it is already possible right now with the default WordPress import and export tools - the positive side effects of reusing existing core functionality. And there's nothing stopping you from committing these in your repository. But this could be taken further, for example:
or even expanding the existing export functionality so that, in addition to WXR, it supports JSON. Curious to hear your thoughts! |

Introduces the foundations of user-defined custom post type (CPT) management interface as part of the content types experiment.
Why?
To manage custom post types natively and naturally from the WP admin interface.

How?
We register a private
wp_user_post_typeCPT holds one record per user-defined post type, with the slug, status, and a JSON-encoded config stored in the standard post fields.Each published record is read on init and registered via
register_post_type()with atightly-validated subset of its config.
A REST insert filter rejects slug collisions with existing post types or other records.
New package -
@wordpress/user-post-typesexposes the form data model, fields, and bulk actions. Same shape as@wordpress/user-taxonomies.New routes -
