What?

Allows you to bold etc. after selecting across multiple blocks. The format buttons in the block toolbar and their shortcuts, bold, italic, link and every other registered format, work on a text selection that starts in one block and ends in another.

Why?

Fixes #27221.

How?

  1. One value for the format types. A MultiBlockFormatEdit component, rendered by BlockTools, joins the selected blocks' rich text values into one value with the selection mapped onto it, and renders the registered format types' edit components and the format toolbar against it, as RichText does for a single field. A change is split back into the blocks. A format that replaces the selected text, such as an inline image, merges the blocks into the first, as typing over the selection does. The writing flow attaches the format shortcuts to its element.
  2. Which blocks. Only when every selected block is nothing but one rich text field: exactly one attribute sourced from the markup, it is rich text, and there are no inner blocks. A quote (citation next to inner blocks), a button (URL next to the text) or a list item with a nested list get no format buttons, since a format would reach only part of what looks selected.
  3. Active state follows rich text's own rule: a format is active when every selected character has it, and toggling applies or removes it for the whole selection. A link becomes one anchor per block, as it is one per line within a block.
  4. Allowed formats. A field's allowedFormats and withoutInteractiveFormatting are props, so each mounted RichText records them by client ID and attribute key, and the toolbar offers the formats every selected field allows.
  5. The selection is kept. Rendering the new values replaces text nodes, and the browser moves the selection with them: Firefox then records the moved selection in the store, Chromium and Safari keep the store but show the moved highlight. After an update the selection is put back from the store's offsets, through a new private rich text helper that maps an offset in a value to a position in the DOM.

Testing Instructions

  1. Type two paragraphs and select from the middle of the first into the middle of the second, with Shift+ArrowUp or Shift+click.
  2. Press Cmd/Ctrl+B, or the Bold button: both parts are bold, the selection is still there, the button is pressed. Press again to remove it.
  3. Press Cmd/Ctrl+K and enter a URL: each block gets a link.
  4. Insert an inline image from the More menu: the selected text is replaced, the blocks are one, the caret is after the image.
  5. Select from a paragraph into a quote or a button: the toolbar has no format buttons.

Testing Instructions for Keyboard

Same as above.

Screenshots or screencast

None.

History

  • The 2024 version added its own bold and italic buttons and toggled each block on its own. Rebuilt on trunk with the approach above.

There are some edge cases that need to be sorted out. When I create a Site Title block and select it together with a paragraph:

Screenshot 2024-03-19 at 11 11 45

What should happen when I click the Bold button? Currently it will crash, calling attribute.length on an undefined value.

The selectionStart object is { clientId, attributeKey: '2', offset: 0 }. That '2' value looks bad, where it came from? The Site Title's RichText is not bound to a block attribute, it has a custom value/onChange binding that connects it to the ( 'root', 'site' ) entity.

The Site Title's RichText also specifies allowedFormats, and that should be respected. If allowedFormats don't include core/bold, you can't make the text bold.

Similar issues arise when I select a List followed by a Paragraph:

Screenshot 2024-03-19 at 11 27 15

Here the List Items are not even part of the selection, getSelectedBlockClientIds() doesn't return them. Clicking the Bold button will crash again, for similar reasons: there is no selectionStart.attributeKey etc.

I know there's still quite a few things to figure out, this PR is not ready yet. Should've maybe put it into draft status.

That '2' value looks bad, where it came from?

Turns out that this is a default identifier value, added by the withDeprecations( RichText ) wrapper, and that it comes from an useInstanceId hook.

I'm wondering what kind of backward compatibility does this provide and whether we could get rid of this default value. The identifier value makes its way to the selection's attributeKey, and the attributeKey is commonly used to access the block's attributes. But the numeric instance ID value doesn't make sense for this.

Here's one example where this backfires. Select parts of two adjacent blocks, Site Title and Paragraph:

Screenshot 2024-03-20 at 10 32 24

First, the UI shows both blocks as fully selected, but the selection is partial: see the offset values in the console.

Second, if you now hit Enter, the __unstableSplitSelection action is executed. This action will try to read the Site Title's 1 attribute, and it will also create a new Site Title block which has a 1 attribute.

At some point I'd like to refactor rich text format registration to work without edit functions, much like how we'd envision a Block API (and data view fields) without edit functions.

Writing flow sets the native selection from the store when the store
holds a text selection across blocks, as rich text does within a block.
The format edit no longer puts the selection back itself, and undo
brings the selection back with the content.

The format restrictions of the fields are kept by block and then by
attribute. The attribute keys are derived from the block names instead
of a joined string. The shortcut and input event sets are shared the way
rich text expects since the trunk merge.

The attribute keys come from a subscribed selector instead of a bound
selector called during render, the selector returns null instead of a
typed empty object when there is nothing to format, the separator is
created like any value, and the toolbar container gets the props it
declares.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Apply toolbar formatting and keyboard shortcuts to text selected across blocks when each selected block contains a single rich-text field.
    • Formatting options are limited to those available in every selected block, and are hidden when the selection extends beyond block text.
    • Replace a selection spanning blocks with an inline image.

The block editor now applies toolbar formats and keyboard shortcuts to text selected across eligible blocks. It combines selected rich-text fields for formatting, updates their attributes, and restores the cross-block text selection.

Changes: Cross-block text formatting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Field settings and selection restoration
packages/block-editor/src/components/rich-text/field-format-settings.js, packages/block-editor/src/components/block-edit/*, packages/block-editor/src/components/block-list/block.jsx, packages/block-editor/src/components/rich-text/index.jsx, packages/block-editor/src/components/rich-text/utils.js, packages/block-editor/src/components/writing-flow/use-multi-selection.js, packages/edit-widgets/src/components/widget-areas-block-editor-content/index.jsx, packages/rich-text/src/hook/index.js, packages/rich-text/src/private-apis.js, packages/rich-text/src/to-dom.js
Rich-text fields register formatting settings and expose selection offsets. The rich-text hook maps offsets to DOM positions, which the editor uses to restore cross-block selections. The block-edit context passes multi-selection state, and the editor content reference is connected to BlockTools and WritingFlow.
Joined cross-block formatting

MultiBlockFormatEdit validates selected blocks, joins their rich-text values for format controls, intersects allowed formats, and writes edits back to block attributes. It registers format shortcuts on WritingFlow.
End-to-end coverage and supporting updates
test/e2e/specs/editor/various/multi-block-selection.spec.js, test/e2e/specs/editor/various/writing-flow.spec.js, docs/reference-guides/data/data-core-block-editor.md, packages/block-editor/src/store/actions.js, packages/block-editor/src/store/selectors.js, tools/eslint/suppressions.json
End-to-end tests cover cross-block formatting, selection behavior, undo and redo, links, inline-image replacement, allowed formats, and ineligible selections. The block-editor API documentation is updated, and an ESLint suppression is removed.

Exclude non-editable fields from multi-block formatting.

RichTextWrapper disables editing for read-only fields, bindings whose canUserEditValue returns false, and restricted pattern overrides. The field settings currently do not record that state, and MultiBlockFormatEdit does not check it before calling updateBlockAttributes for every selected block. A cross-block selection can therefore apply formatting to a field that is not editable on its own.

Register disabled: shouldDisableEditing and suppress multi-block formatting when any selected field is disabled.

The rich text hook returns the DOM position of an offset in its value,
built with the same handlers and placeholder it renders with, so the
position is right when a format such as the non-breaking space adds
elements. The block editor field uses it to put its end of a text
selection across blocks back after it renders, the way it applies a
selection within itself, and the field at the other end does the same.
Writing flow only keeps the wrapper as the editing host for such a
selection. The block edit context tells a field that its block is part
of a multi-selection, so only those fields subscribe to the selection.

A selection end in a field other than the block's single rich text
field, or a field that cannot be edited, means the selection is not
formatted as a whole.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…jects replace the selection

The writing flow attaches the shortcut listener to its own element with a
ref effect and records the element for the format popovers and focus,
instead of the format edit reaching for the content ref in an effect. The
widgets editor renders BlockTools without that ref.

A format that changes the text, like a non-breaking space or an inline
image, now replaces the selection as it does within a block: the first
block takes the merged text, the other selected blocks are removed, and
the caret lands after the new text.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…aking space

The image goes through the toolbar button and the media modal, which is
how the selection is replaced in practice, and covers the refocus after
the modal closes.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A block preview inside the canvas runs its own writing flow under the
same format edit; it belongs to another registry, so it must not take
the shortcuts or the element. A selection that cannot be replaced
because a block is locked against removal is left as it is, the way
typing over it does nothing. The position resolver no longer changes
identity on every render, and the inline image test covers undo.

…ss blocks

The writing flow creates the shortcut Set and the element ref, attaches
the shortcut listener with a ref effect, and returns the format edit for
its element, so a block preview in the canvas has its own and nothing is
shared through a context. Replacing the selection goes through
replaceBlocks, the action typing over the selection uses, so locked
blocks are treated the same way.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…writing flow

Block tools wraps the canvas in the format edit, which provides only
the Set of shortcut callbacks. A hook merged into the writing flow ref
attaches the listener for them to its element. The popovers anchor to
the content ref block tools already holds, so the widgets screen now
passes one too.

Recompute field settings when registration changes.

useMemo depends only on clientIds and keys, but getFieldFormatSettings reads a mutable module-level map. The RichTextWrapper registers settings in an effect, and later changes call setFieldFormatSettings again. These mutations do not change either memo dependency or notify Fields.

The memo can therefore retain stale disabled, allowedFormats, or withoutInteractiveFormatting values. Store the settings in a subscribable source, or expose a subscribed version that the mutators update and include in the memo dependencies.

wporg-sync pushed a commit to WordPress/WordPress that referenced this pull request Oct 20, 2026
This updates the pinned commit hash of the Gutenberg repository from
7b95ee96b54de2e35886971ccf7eb449c324c830 (version 24.2.0) to
be6a50be6834e922b9db12c75c9a2cd817b2db59.

The new hash is the tip of the wp/7.2 branch rather than a release tag. It
covers the 24.3.0 RC1 release plus the changes cherry-picked to the branch
after it was tagged: Gutenberg PRs 85155, 82730, 71634, and 81644.
