ANGI: How often to you get lost in a story?

JULIE: All the time. My brain has a thousand tabs open, but one tab is always actively working on the next book(s).

ANGI: What’s your favorite thing about your book’s hero?

JULIE: My favorite thing about my heroine Lexi Carmichael is  that she’s such a conundrum. She’s smart enough to know she needs people and a life outside her “virtual existence,” but she doesn’t know quite how to go about it. Enter her best friend, Basia, who is essentially the expositional character in the series. She plays off Lexi’s inexperience and offers suggestions to help bring her out of her geek shell with sometimes (well, most of the time) unexpected results.

ANGI: What’s your favorite movie of all time?

JULIE: Star Wars IV: A New Hope. I remember being electrified in the movie theater the first time I saw it. It was so fresh, original and exciting. I still love it to this day!

ANGI:  A woman after my own heart !!

ANGI: Salad or soup?

JULIE: Gah! Too hard to answer. I love both soup and salad! Depends on my mood and the day.

ANGI: Would you put yourself in a Fairy Tale or Action Adventure?

JULIE: Action adventure for sure. Love the challenge, the figuring out the puzzles and problems and enjoy fast-paced action.

ANGI: Favorite TV rerun you watch every time you channel surf? 

JULIE: Star Trek. Doesn’t matter which series version, although I have an extra spot for The Next Generation and Captain Picard.

ANGI: Now you’re just trying to get on my good side… LOVE Star Trek!

ANGI: Favorite date night…fancy or at home? 

JULIE: Casual out. Mostly so I don’t have to cook or do the dishes. J

Jan Schliesman: How often do you Get Lost In A Story?

Julie Rowe: A lot! I’m an avid reader and love nothing more than to get pulled into a new world. I’m really lucky in that my oldest daughter is a bookseller and she gives me lots of suggestions for new authors to read. Sometimes they’re downright orders! Her latest order to read was the Sarah J Maas Throne of Glass series. I stayed up all night reading that! J

Jan: It was love at first sight when I met my hubby. How about you?

Julie: It was love at first sight for me too! The way we met was somewhat…odd. I’d gone out to the bar the night before and ended up with 4 guys trying to pick me up (I live in a city with a very high men-to-women ratio). I didn’t go home with any of them, but one of them called to apologize for being drunk and saying more than he should have. It turned out that he lived in the same apartment building as I did. I told him it was no problem, then invited him and his roommate to join me and some friends for pizza and movies at my apartment. I took one look at the roommate – my husband George – and was done. This was the man I was going to marry. We started dating a week or two later. 

Jan: What are you currently reading?

Julie: I’m currently reading Debra Dunbar’s Imp series which is all about fun demon paranormals. Up next is Annie Bellet’s Twenty-Sided Sorceress series whose title character is a gamer, nerd and sorceress. I can’t wait to get into it. 

Jan: What’s your favorite season and why?

Julie: Summer is my favorite season because there’s no snow! I live in Fort McMurray, AB, Canada and yes, we have snow on the ground already.

Jan: What do you love most about your latest release?

Julie: I got to use my med lab training and experience. I also love my hot, nerd hero in Viral Justice.

Jan: How long have you been writing?

Julie: About 15 years. Didn’t sell a thing for the first 10 of those years, so persistence played a huge role in getting me to where I am now.

Jan: I’m not much of a cook. How about you? Any favorite dishes that will tempt you away from the keyboard and into the kitchen?

Julie: Are you kidding? Pie! Cake! Chocolate! I’m a total sucker for butter chicken and a good pasta sauce (not together!).

Jan: I always have a case of Dasani next to my desk. What’s your favorite go-to beverage?

Julie: Tea! I have a lot of different types and flavors to satisfy cravings and mood.

ANGI: How often to you get lost in a story?

HELENKAY: As often as possible and non-stop after I turn my book in and the deadline is over. It’s my favorite thing. Fall into a story, forget what time it is, ignore the phone…forget to feed the pets.

ANGI: Benedict Cumberbatch or Chris Pine?

HELENKAY: I only get one choice?  Cumberbatch wins based on accent.

ANGI: What’s your favorite meal?

HELENKAY:  Steak and fries. It’s a little naughty and I generally need a nap after, but I love it!

ANGI: What do you like about the hero of LINE OF FIRE?

HELENKAY: He’s looking for redemption. He’s made huge mistakes and taken the heroine for granted, but he’s trying to be a better man.

ANGI: Where do you read and how often?

HELENKAY:  Unfortunately the real answer is: on my laptop while I revise the book I’m writing. But I love reading and have this chaise lounge in my office. It’s perfect for reading (and napping).

ANGI: What action adventure movie would you like to be in?

HELENKAY: All of them. I adore action movies but I fear in real life I’d be the first one to die.

ANGI: What’s your favorite recent movie?

HELENKAY: I just saw The Martian and really enjoyed it. I don’t know anything about science, so it could all be wrong and I don’t care.

ANGI: What's your most favorite thing to do in California?

HELENKAY: Walk by the Bay. Water, sun and a cool breeze - bliss!

ANGI: Is your favorite villain still Aaron Stampler in Primal Fear? How does his character hold that spot?

HELENKAY: He is absolutely a favorite because he hid his evil so well, yet it was right there under the surface and we wanted to think it wasn’t true.

ANGI: Hiking Boots or Dancing Heels?

HELENKAY: Never heels. I wear them for the three fancy things I go to a year and nothing more.

ANGI’S GOTTA ASK: In a recent tweet you said: “Got 2 reviews tonight for LINE OF FIRE. One loved/one hated. No surprise. The hero/heroine make bad choices & may not connect w/ everyone.” Can you tell us a little more? Without spoilers of course.

HELENKAY:  Molly and Jason have a rough past. They’ve known each other forever. He is her big brother’s best friend. Their lives keep throwing them together and her feelings are still strong, but when the book opens she is done pining for him. Wants to stop loving him. Right at that time, of course, Jason realizes he’s been taking her for granted and hurt her and wants to fix their relationship. When you add in a HUGE secret that motivates his actions, you get a couple that wants to be together but keeps holding back. That leads to a lot of angst. Some reviewers are blaming Jason. Some are say Molly is the problem. It’s like watching friends take sides in a break-up. I had a feeling that would happen, but their battle is realistic in light of their past and it takes every minute of the few weeks over which the book happens to sort it all out.

DONNELL:  Hi, Tina, welcome to Get Lost in a Story.  Wow, I’m still fanning myself over those covers.  What was your first reaction when you saw them.  Seriously I love them!

TINA: I love them too! Harlequin revamped the covers for their medical line as of January of this year, and I’m seriously in love with the new format.

DONNELL:  Correct me if I’m wrong, but do you live in South America?  Part time, full time?  How does that work?  Are you bilingual?

TINA: I live in Brazil, although we’re in the United States at the moment. I’ve been there for ten years, with periodic visits home to see friends and family (and attend writing conferences). Before Brazil, we lived in Portugal for seven years. So, after seventeen years of living in Portuguese-speaking countries, I hope I can say I’m fluent by now. Although sometimes the two languages (English and Portuguese) get jumbled up in my head, and I speak a weird combination of both, throwing in an English word here...a Portuguese word there. Luckily my family does the same thing, so we still manage to communicate! It does make for some challenges when writing my books, though. You will definitely see a few Portuguese words in these books.

DONNELL:  You write for medical romance.  Do you have a medical background? And don’t you write for other lines?  Do you have a favorite – or is that putting you on the spot?

TINA: I don’t have a medical background, although I thought about going into nursing for a while. But I thrive on medical shows like Mystery Diagnosis, Medical Detectives, Venom ER and a bunch of others. And my family has provided plenty of medical material from their bumps, cuts and broken bones over the years. And yes, they do wind up in my books!

I also write single title romantic suspense for Carina Press. I honestly can’t choose a favorite. They’re both genres that I love reading.

DONNELL:  So I notice that the brothers have different last names?  Can you explain that or do I have to wait to read the book ;)

TINA:  Ah yes, my heroes’ last names. It’s a big part of the overall story. That and a promise the boys made to their father when they were little. After their dad died, the brothers were separated. One was adopted and went to live in the United States, while the other brother remained in Brazil and grew up in an orphanage. The brother in the United States has his adoptive parents’ last name.

DONNELL:  If you could live anywhere on earth, where would it be and why?

TINA: I adore living in Brazil, so I think I would have to stick with that. Although the funny thing is, when I’m there, I miss the United States, and when I’m in the United States, I find myself longing for Brazil. Each country has something that I love. Right now I’m enjoying Girl Scout cookies—thin mints—straight out of the freezer. Yum!

DONNELL: What comes next for Tina Beckett?

TINA: I’m currently working on another medical duet, this time with the amazing Amalie Berlin. The books are set on a ski resort in Colorado and feature lifelong friends who meet on New Year’s Eve to ring in the coming year. Neither realizes that the resolutions they make this year will change their lives forever. I’m having a blast writing my heroine’s story. And Amalie is a hoot. We’ve done a ton of laughing as we’ve batted ideas back and forth.
