Monday 30SEP2019

8.7 miles over practice.

My Achilles has been a bit hot since I rolled it on the Lincoln Monument back in June, but it has seemed really more pissed the last couple of days.  I took it easy today on the run, which meant I naturally fell into turning my arms and shoulders and core into jelly post run in the weight room.

16 pull ups for a best on the year.  Came back a little later after other work and got 10 more - felt good about that.

Week wrap 29SEP2019

Exercise or even training took a back seat through the later half of the week while on the road.  I got back on the path a bit over the weekend but I was feeling pretty dead legged on those runs.  Just over 50 on the week.

Wednesday 25SEP2019 Schenley Park

I got into Pitt late last night, wandered down to the University of Pittsburgh area and found myself on a stool at Fuel and Fuddie.  I pinged JT via text and got a few recommendations for the couple of days I am here.

AM - tired, tired.  I find that my capacity to deal with even a 2 hour time change is not what it used to be.  Of course, with age I am naturally slower, but even my brain's desire to get up and get after it first thing in the morning has waned a bit over the years.

I didn't stay downtown this go around but am up Schenley Park.  I wandered over into that, and enjoyed some of the sunrise.

Tuesday 24SEP2019 Following the Syd train

AM - GW convinced me to get out at 6:15.  I took to the bait pretty easily as I knew I'd be tied up the rest of the day, including travel to the east coast.  Syd B was doing some work - more than I wanted given I was feeling the effort from yesterday but I agreed to jump into the middle 800 of her mile repeats.  I'd do that, then jog over to the 200 to go mark and bring her in.  It made for a nice little run of 8.2 miles.  Syd ran great.

A little later in the morning I got another 3.4.  Rest of the week is likely to fall down a bit given the travel.

Monday 23SEP2019

Afternoon - 5.2 miles with the kids, doing some hard pick ups - way faster than I have run in a while, and actually working pretty hard with the kids.  It felt good but I sort of shredded the legs up some.  After a bit of a break for a team stretch, and some chat I got in an additional 4.8 miles.

Sunday 22SEP2019

AM - 12 miles.  Sort of a longer run for me these days.  I was feeling pretty good with the cooler temps and the sunny sky.  Ran into Neeraj the last couple of miles coming up out of the open space and jogged it in with him.

A 73 mile week - which is no longer a regular thing for me (only the fourth time this year, and once with a race in it over a marathon in distance - and a couple of tempo style workouts in there too.  Volume is up being home, as I have had about 105 over the last 10 days.  Most of this is coming off of two a days, but that is where I am at too.  It's good to enjoy the run, this season and being home.

I have been growing my hair back since about the end of July.  I have had it cleaned up from a hair cut perspective around the edges a couple of times.  I have never been a big fan of going to get a hair cut - it just always has felt like a bit of a waste of time, and money.  But on this go around, I have been able to feel some small enjoyment in it.  I forgot actually greatly enjoyable the part where they put the hot shaving cream on the back of your neck and shave that with a straight blade.  It is really oddly and wonderfully relaxing.

Working on adding a FF song to the mix.  I like this one.

Saturday 21SEP2019

AM - 5 miles at the Lyons XC meet.

I love these meets.  Kids have successes, kids have struggles, kids PR, kids lay an egg of a race ... it is the whole process of it that works for whole set of bigger considerations like show up everyday, put in the work, don't burn out, take care of the little things, the other 22 hours matter, focus but don't lose your mind, be a good team mate, you can do more than you think you can and you are better than you think you are.  Some are better at all of it than others, but the lessons are there for everyone with competitive running.  I love it.

Afternoon - jogged the dogs a bit and then added on.  5.3 miles.

Friday 20SEP2019

AM - 7.1 miles with Braun and Greg.

Played Rails End last night.  I was going to do "Sailboat Captain" by Rainbow Kitten Surprise, then "All the Debts" by Caamp, then "Americano" by RCPM and then figure out what I'd do for a fourth if they allowed it.  I shifted at the last second and started with "Maybe It's Time" at the last minute - just because I am more comfortable with that tune.  I then rolled into "Sailboat" and did well with that but I botched the crap out of "Debts" but the crowd seemed to be okay with it.  I decided to ask what the crowd wanted for a last tune:  "Do you want a song about the lonesome desert or about sex?"  The answer was obvious so I played "Squeezebox" by the Who.

Maybe some video of it out there at some point. The view of the place before I went on.

Thursday 19SEP2019

Busy day ... just sort of rough going all day.  AM - 3.7 miles on the ditch.  PM - 5.1 with Greg at practice.

Tuesday 17SEP2019

I paced Eric S last year at LT100.  He has always puts up good post race video.  Here is his 8th version of it.

Afternoon - a tad tired.  8 miles.

Monday 16SEP2019

Joined Greg and Ian this AM for a run, and we did some 200, 300 meter pick ups.  6.2 miles.

Afternoon - another handful of miles plus while the kids did a workout.  Good day.  Easy to start but even rolled with a few of their reps to get eyes and ears on how they were doing.  Felt good once I was moving.  Like they say, the youth keep you young.

As a kid, I did what a lot of kids learning guitar did ... I immersed myself in the blues ... first with Page, and then Beck and Clapton. But that quickly led to guys like the Kings (Albert, Freddie, and ...) including BB.  As I dug in, the simplicity of what he did, but the tone of it, and that vibrato ... well, wow.  And that ES-335 ... still a guitar that is a someday I am thinking about.

BB King would have been 94 today.

This is an incredible version too.

Weekend 14-15SEP2019

Saturday started with the XC meet up at Waneka Lake.  All the races gave me reason to run around to get to less than regularly visited spots to cheer on the kids.  I was fairly well caffeinated.

It is not continuous running, but it is something - an easier effort for sure but I needed that with the longer Friday effort in the legs.  10.1 miles.

Sunday - I felt pretty sloggy on the wake up but got out, thinking I'd only do a half hour for a wake up shake up sort of thing.  Managed to roll for an hour and even get some fair pace in there rather than just fighting myself.  8.1 miles.

I ended up with 65 plus on the week.  TZ asked if I was training for anything and I can't say that I am but I do enjoy the regular grind - it keeps me balanced, focused, and a bit more "awake" then when I am not on it.  I sort of need the path.  Actually I think we all need some sort of path but it might not be 70 mile weeks.  She asked if there was a minimum sort of miles to get to that and I don't know what that is either.  It is probably not 20 but it is probably also not 65.  But 65 felt good this past week.

Back at it Friday 13SEP2019

Back to CO, and it felt good.  I got out in the afternoon, and while it was sunny and hot - it definitely had more of the fall tinge to the temp:  just a hair cooler and enjoyable.

I did a half dozen before meeting up with the coaches.  We jogged a bit and then I ran with Syd and Greg for workout - a broken tempo session.  The track was in use by the football team practice (this still miffs me because there is never a time when the football field is really allowed to be in use by the track team for practice) so we did the work on the mile loop around school. It was the most effort in a run I have had since Pikes and it felt good to roll the wheels a bit.  13.4 miles when all done.

Thursday 12SEP2019

AM - slow to start but got in five.  Nothing in the afternoon as it was back to LAX for the travel back to DEN.

Evening - another 4.5 miles.

Tuesday 10SEP2019

Got in six and change on Monday before heading to LA.  My game was off though.  Just felt sluggish in the run, and there were other markers that I was having a poor performance day (e.g. I didn't pack my laptop P/S - I mean, WTF?).  Thought I'd get in a few miles when I got into CA but a two hour commute from the airport to the hotel sucked that idea out of me.

But I did get up this AM for seven.  The contrasts of LA are always interesting.

Sunday 08SEP2019

Got in just over 50 miles last week.  That is two weeks of easy post Pikes.   It was sort of forced by the travel last week to Juarez/El Paso.  I guess that is good, but I do feel an itch to start to move a bit more again.

No photo description available.

Travel is sort of kicking my involvement with the XC team to the side a bit but got the opportunity to head with the team to Wyoming for their first 5k race at the college meet there.  Exhausting day coming off a travel in the morning sort of thing, but loved hanging at a race with great kids, and fun coaches.

Off to LA this week.

Oh yeah, jumped in the open jam circle at Rails last night (Sean P clued me into it).  It was a blast.  I was only there about an hour before we got scattered cuz of the big storm that blew in.  There may have been a Britney cover in there, and I may have done "Squeezebox" to get the crowd going a bit, and probably a rendition of "Just Like Heaven" and "Copperhead Road."

In West Texas ... 02SEP2019

Been bumping around, recovering, getting in a few miles, but not focused on anything.  I had a 10 plus miler towards the end of last week and while I didn't feel beat up, I just was tired.

Sunday I headed out to El Paso.  I'll be working across the border this week in Juarez, and we will go back and forth every day.  Today (Monday) it took us two hours to get back.  Not a lot of fun with that.
