Thursday 123010

AM – 20 miles, treadmill.  Kept it pretty easy for the first dozen or so (HR sub 150), and then decided it was okay it get it done and let it float up.  Started real easy (8:30) and then it was hovering 7-7:30.  The dip in the graph is where I had to restart the mill (did not stop the watch)

4087 miles on the year.

  1. Dropped a casual 20, huh. I know you're just trying to intimidate me.

Time for me to man up and get outside. Looks cold out there.

  2. Nick - I am pretty certain it takes a lot more than that to shake ya.

Derrick - nah. I think, like most, I initially found the treadmill to be drudgery. Now, I find it very easy mentally. Grab the MP3 player and go. No need to worry about pace, terrain, traffic, etc. Time clicks off the same. In fact, I think it is easier. If I compare the relative efforts of the last two days (15 miles at elevation), they are about the same as this 20 here on the mill.

  3. I'm with Derrick. 20 miles on the mill. Ugh. That said, I agree that the relative effort on the mill is lower. Still, the mental aspect...for me...is almost intimidating. I can do the mill when I have, say, a specific speed workout to do. The long casual pace stuff drives me nuts. I never tried it whilst watching a movie, though. That might work. Someday, maybe, I'll find out.

  4. I've tried the music thing, and even with the best of the Pogues blasting, I still struggled to get an hour in.

Uphill tempos are the one thing that I do like since we don't have your mountains. Even then, I usually find myself doing my WU/CD outside.

Yeah, maybe a decent movie or Bruins game might work?

  5. No movies this AM, but listened to some buddhist podcasts.

But Tool works just as well.

  6. Nice..

I'm still holding off on the mill as long as I can... We've hit single digits this year but I'm still refusing.....

  7. I've ridden 100 miles on an indoor bicycle. The winter of 1999 in Seattle. It was pouring rain and starting to turn to snow. 5:30 total time.

  8. I agree, the mill isn't all that bad especially, as you say G, no "obstacles" to worry about. Just go.

Doesn't it aggravate the PF though?
That, for me, is the biggest drawback.

  9. I don't think I've ever done 20 on the mill, but I have run 3 hours at 10-12% on the mill. I watch TDF, a MW tape, Olympic T&F and some live concerts to get through it. The handful of times I've done this the time has flown by.

  10. I was sharing an off line conversation about this topic with someone. 20 on the mill is softer than 20 outside. If anything, it is really just an effort of 2 plus hours at an average of 148. Just turn the head off and go. Physically, it would have been more challenging for me to get out and bang out 20 outside today. So I sort of crack up at folks thinking what I did this morning was tough. In fact, it was ****Y!

I love that 100 miles on the bike though Lucho.

Rick - I think I shared this already? I have done Pikes simulation runs where I modify the grade at different points to emulate the Pikes averages. I have done that where I do a full 13.1 "up" and then bring the mill to zero percent for, oh half an hour or so, to emulate the down. And yes, zero percent feels like DOWN after near 3 hours of 11.5 percent average.

Rick - my PF is being a bit quiet.

  12. I don't think I am going for those records.

  13. Still planning on doing my 17 hour treadmill run for the Rochester Y Strong Kids Campaign again. I was easily distracted in August when I did this for the first time, but I have difficulty most of the time turning the brain off. I think that I have, only to discover that 10-15 minutes have gone by. The effort always seems more difficult for me, but I tend to enjoy time on the treadmill more when I think of it as a break from regular running. To do this, I don't even look at pace and have to turn the tunes way up. Nice job on the 20. Whether or not you view it that way, it really is an effort most would consider impossible to even attempt.
