Today the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) officially applies across the 🇪🇺! 🛡️ On this occasion, our network Break Free From Plastic is taking a closer look at a key aspect of the Regulation: safer packaging. As part of the Regulation, 🇪🇺 Member States must introduce legally binding measures to restrict PFAS "forever chemicals" in food-contact packaging. From this moment onwards, food-contact packaging placed on the EU market must comply with the PFAS limits and companies must ensure their food packaging materials meet the new requirements before they are marketed. This measure offers a glimpse of hope! Surfrider Foundation Europe recalls that the PPWR was adopted in January 2025, after years of discussions obstructed by pressure from cardboard, industrial packaging and fast-food lobbyists. After intensive lobbying, the adopted text largely prioritised recycling over waste reduction and reuse. Gentle reminder: the best way to preserve our health and the ocean is to reduce plastic production and choose reuse! After years of negotiations and pushback attempts, today the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) officially applies across the EU! If applied ambitiously by 🇪🇺 Member States, this Regulation will bring: ✨Less waste: reduced single-use packaging, increased reuse and refill, and improved packaging design requirements. 🛡️Safer packaging: as of today, harmful PFAS "forever chemicals" are restricted in food-contact packaging. All of this is only possible if PPWR provisions are applied with the highest level of ambition and consistency by 🇪🇺 Member States. 📣 Take action: Keep your government accountable, ask your representatives how they plan to enforce ambitious PPWR standards and make sure they stick to their promises!
