Are we still procuring air traffic management (ATM) software as if it's the 1990s? In his latest article, Mohamed-Rafi Riley, Associate Director, Aviation, explores why ATM system procurement models may no longer reflect the realities of modern software delivery. While software-intensive industries have embraced continuous delivery, flexibility, collaboration, subscription models and platform evolution, ATM system procurement often remains rooted in fixed-scope, turnkey approaches. Yet other highly regulated and safety-critical sectors, from defence to automotive, have already demonstrated that continuous software evolution can coexist with rigorous assurance and governance. The challenge for ANSPs is not whether systems should evolve, but how procurement models can support that evolution whilst maintaining safety, sovereignty and competition. As ATM architectures become increasingly service-oriented, procurement strategies must evolve alongside them. 🚆 The transformation of Canada's GO Transit network highlights how rail electrification is becoming a cornerstone of sustainable mobility worldwide. Across the globe, transport authorities and operators are investing in network upgrades to increase capacity, improve the passenger experience and reduce environmental impact. Against this backdrop, we are contributing to one of North America's most ambitious rail transformation programmes: the evolution of the GO Transit network across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Working alongside Metrolinx, Arup and the wider project team, we are drawing on our international rail electrification expertise to support the development of a network that is more frequent, more reliable and ready to meet the mobility needs of tomorrow. [Aviation project milestone] New report outlines meteorology and space weather risks for Higher Airspace Operations (HAO). Developed under the ASCENT project for the EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency, by the consortium comprising Egis, Unisphere and ESSP SAS, this report is the first in a series of outputs supporting the development of a regulatory framework for HAO. The findings of this report provide a hazard baseline for HAO, identifying the meteorological and space weather phenomena that could affect future concepts and operations in higher airspace and assessing the safety risks they may pose. Understanding these hazards is an important step towards developing a safe and effective environment for HAO. Key highlights ✅12 representative HAO use cases were developed to provide operational context across a wide range of applications, including: - Telecommunications and connectivity services - Earth observation and environmental monitoring - Disaster response and emergency communications - Scientific research and atmospheric observations - Meteorological measurements - Surveillance and monitoring operations - Persistent aerial infrastructure - Transit operations through higher airspace - High-speed transport and space operations - Transit operations involving suborbital and space vehicles - Air policing - Air assistance. ✅17 meteorological and space weather hazards were identified and assessed, with risks classified as high, moderate or low. They range from stratospheric wind fields and jet streams to atmospheric particles. While this represents an initial assessment, the findings will inform the next phases of the ASCENT project relating to meteorological (MET) and space weather services. Alongside this work, a parallel study is assessing communications, navigation and surveillance (CNS) needs and capabilities. [Project] A 2025 systematic review of 128 infrastructure studies found digital transformation in asset management consistently reduced lifetime costs and increased operational efficiency. In this article, Michael Cahir, General Manager at Certus Digital, and Jeff Burt, Tunnel Director in Ireland, outline how they delivered a major digitalisation upgrade for the Dublin and Jack Lynch tunnels in just 4 months. The asset management systems of both tunnels were modernised to address ageing infrastructure, limited data visibility, increasing operational complexity, and anticipate future contract requirements. [Project] A service gate left open can become a risk for motorway operations. On the A88 motorway in Normandy, France, our teams tested whether long-range drones can detect operational anomalies such as an open gate. This type of event may seem minor, but it requires a quick response to maintain infrastructure safety and prevent any intrusion or hazardous situation.
