🌍 Greenland 2026 | Advocacy & Science: turning knowledge into action Our Advocacy & Science expedition has just come to an end. But its true impact cannot be measured only by the distance we travelled or the scientific milestones we achieved. It is reflected in the knowledge we gained, the partnerships we strengthened, and the shared conviction that bringing together science, business and decision-makers is essential if we want to better protect the Ocean. 🌊 For nearly two weeks, the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco brought together HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, scientists, entrepreneurs and business leaders with one common goal: to better understand the Arctic so that we can better protect it. ❄️ The Arctic often feels like a distant place. Yet what happens there affects us all. Its evolution influences the global climate, biodiversity and, ultimately, the future of our planet. Throughout the expedition, cutting-edge technologies helped push the boundaries of knowledge. Autonomous underwater vehicles explored previously unmapped seabeds, environmental DNA (eDNA) revealed the presence of marine species from simple seawater samples, while research teams investigated invisible pollutants such as PFAS and mercury. Together, these tools are opening new ways to understand some of the least explored marine ecosystems on Earth. 📍 At 83°03′ N, in Peary Land, the scientific teams carried out the northernmost coastal sampling of the expedition, confirmed the presence of harbour seals using rapid eDNA analysis, and completed the first-ever benthic mapping of the area's coastal waters. Every new dataset helps build the knowledge needed to better understand—and better protect—the Ocean. Beyond these scientific achievements, the expedition reinforced a simple idea: knowledge only makes a difference when it is shared and turned into action. That is why researchers, business leaders and decision-makers travelled together—to experience these fragile environments firsthand and to build a common understanding of the challenges ahead. 🤝 The environmental challenges of tomorrow can only be addressed by bringing together those who produce knowledge, those who innovate and those who make decisions. Because protecting the Ocean always starts with understanding it. 🌍 83°03′ NORTH. Where the map ends, science begins.   Our Greenland 2026 advocacy and science expedition has reached 83°03’ N, all the way to Peary Land.   In one of the most remote regions on Earth, we carried out the northernmost coastal sampling of the entire expedition—a major milestone that will help expand our understanding of these still largely unexplored Arctic ecosystems.   🧬 Thanks to NATURELINK, we have been able to conduct the first rapid environmental DNA (eDNA) test in this area. The team screened for five pre-selected target species and field analyses confirmed the presence of the harbour seal, a species whose Greenland populations are currently in decline. This is the first evidence confirming its presence in this zone—an encouraging scientific result and a welcome piece of good news for Arctic biodiversity.   🤖 Together with cosma, our autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) completed the first-ever benthic mapping of Peary Land's coastal waters, capturing unprecedented images of the seafloor at a depth of 15 metres. A scientific first that reminds us just how much of the Ocean remains to be explored.   These expeditions are about far more than technological achievement. They reinforce a fundamental principle: science is the foundation of informed decision-making. Every new dataset, every unexplored habitat, every discovery brings us one step closer to protecting the Ocean more effectively. Yesterday, alongside HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, we witnessed groundbreaking technologies transforming the way we explore the Ocean: 🤖 autonomous underwater drones deployed by cosma to rapidly map the seafloor and quantify marine biodiversity 🧬 environmental DNA (eDNA) technology used by Naturelink to detect marine wildlife from simple seawater samples 🧪 and cutting-edge research by Daxtachem investigating invisible pollutants, including PFAS and mercury. Together, these innovations are enabling us to investigate marine environments that have never been explored before. 🌊 But this expedition is about more than science. 🤝 By bringing scientists, business leaders and decision-makers together on the same journey, we are creating something equally important: a shared understanding that can turn scientific knowledge into concrete action. 🌊 Our Floating Offshore Wind Committee meetings for April were more than engaging! 📑 Interface Risk Subcommittee - 16th of April The 7th Interface Risk Subcommittee meeting featured two key presentations: one by Ralf Skowronnek of Skowronnek & Bechnak on floating wind insurability, and another by Jerome Guillet of SNOW on bankability. The first presentation highlighted that insurability depends on managing interface risks through clear contractual risk allocation, higher technical maturity (TRL levels), and strong risk and loss mitigation strategies, particularly for critical components like moorings and dynamic cables. The second one emphasised that floating wind remains difficult to finance due to contracting structures that are not fit-for-purpose and unclear liability across interfaces, meaning bankability also relies on robust project management, well-structured contracts, and effective control of interface risks. 🌿 Environment, Cohabitation & Biodiversity Subcommittee - 29th of April Quentin Calas of cosma was there to give a presentation on scalable autonomous underwater drones and AI for benthic habitat monitoring, highlighting how advanced monitoring technologies can improve environmental data collection and support more efficient, scalable assessment of seabed ecosystems in offshore wind projects. Also, Ryan Maidment of ERM spoke about assessing and mitigating environmental impacts of UK floating offshore wind. The environmental consenting remains a major challenge due to uncertainties in project design, impacts such as underwater noise and seabird collision risk, and the need for robust EIAs and mitigation strategies may be overestimated but still require careful management.
