Using Formcrier

Forms and fields

Choose which forms alert you, what each alert shows, and which fields are never sent.

Turning forms on

Forms appear under Sites → Forms once a page that has them is opened, marked "New — not listening yet". They start switched off, so you only get alerts you want. Switch on each form you want alerts for. A submission sent while its form was off is kept, marked "Arrived while off", and you can send its alert from the submission, or when you switch the form on within a day.

To cover every form, including ones added later, turn on "Listen to all forms automatically". That also switches on every form already found.

A site can have up to 200 forms. Any found after that are recorded together as "Other forms".

Naming a form

Open a form to change its "Display name". It's used in the alert: "New enquiry on Acme Plumbing — Contact form".

The script takes the first name from the page, such as the form's aria-label, its name attribute or the first heading inside it. A form with none of those is called "Untitled form".

To set the name in your HTML, add data-formcrier-name to the form. data-formcrier-form sets the reference we know the form by, so it stays the same form in your dashboard if its id or fields change. Leave data-formcrier-form off forms made with a form plugin: they already have a fixed reference.

Preview fields

An alert shows a few fields, and its View submission link shows everything. Unless you choose, those are the first three fields that were filled in. To choose, open the form and tick up to five under "Show in the alert". If no fields are listed yet, they appear after the form's next submission.

Three settings apply to every form, under Settings → Alerts. "Alert style" is Compact, which shows the answers only, or Detailed, which labels each one. "Detailed alerts" shows every field, not just the preview fields. "Include page address" adds the page the form was on.

Long alerts are shortened to fit the channel they go to.

Excluding fields

To keep a field out of Formcrier altogether, open the form and tick it under "Never send". It's dropped before anything is stored. Once the script has picked up the change, which takes a few minutes, the field doesn't leave the browser at all.

Some fields are always removed, whatever you choose: passwords, card numbers, and security and captcha tokens. The script doesn't read hidden fields.

You can also mark a field in your HTML. Add data-formcrier-ignore to the field, or to any element around it, and the script never reads it.

Ignoring a form

A form that's switched off doesn't alert you, and the script doesn't send its submissions.

To hide a form from Formcrier completely, such as a login or search form, add data-formcrier-ignore to it. It's never sent and never listed.

HTML
<form data-formcrier-ignore>…</form>

File uploads

On Pro and Agency, the script also sends the files a visitor attaches: up to 5 files of up to 10MB each. They appear on the submission's page as download links, and are deleted with the submission.

Images, PDFs, Word and Excel documents, OpenDocument text and spreadsheets, text and CSV files, and MP4 and MOV videos are accepted. Other types are left out.
