Things I like to talk about: stuff that I’m curious about or that is counterintuitive, therapy stuff, earworms, kvetching about stuff I'm reading (or, rarely, writing), and occasionally raving about fic recs and links. Sometimes I write out my thoughts-naming meditation or something about my weird brand of secular paganism, but those are pretty rare at the moment.

Comments are welcome here, and I will try to reply unless you are probably trolling. As long as you apologize when you hurt someone then we're cool. If all you want to say is a heart/emoji, that's cool, too! If you need cuts with trigger warnings? Please let me know … unless you want me to trigger warn for parts of my identity like the word “queer”. Just. No. I like having company over and want you to feel safe here, but I have to feel safe here, too.

As someone whose body does not always work like it says on the label, I’m no longer putting processing/whining/complaining about that behind a cut. I saw a tumblr post a while back that said one reason abled people are so bad at interacting with disabled people is because we’re kept to the margins as much as possible. That folks don’t have to interact with us very often, so they don’t get enough practice to be good at it - and that is to everyone’s detriment.

Fandom stuff: I don’t write on AO3 much anymore, but! I'm currently into DC Batfamily crack, and I bookmark some fun and spicy things! A couple years ago Star Wars ate my brain, but I seem to be doing fine in its absence, so who needs brains, really? The fandoms I'm mostly not in anymore where you may have seen my comments include: The MCU, Leverage, The Witcher, The Good Place, Daredevil, Star Trek: AOS, Smallville, X-Men, Stargates SG1 and Atlantis, Teen Wolf, The Losers, and random comments on your musicals and 80's movies fics. (I will sadly no longer be reading Harry Potter or Good Omens fics, for terrible-people-can-suck-a-lemon reasons.)

If someone on DreamWidth OR AO3 is harassing you or doing you a microaggression, drop me a DM? As a white anti-racist ally, an antifascist, and a person who believes in the power of weaponized empathy, I need more practice having uncomfortable conversations with people who need to be gently informed what consequences their actions may be having for themselves and the people they are (hopefully unwittingly) hurting. Or! I can talk smack about the people upsetting you and write insulting haiku about them until you feel validated and can process the bad-feels. Whatever you need, I'm gonna try to be there for that. I take the bonds of community seriously.

FANWORKS POLICY: I do not give permission for my words or works to be fed into an LLM or AI training of any kind. Other than that caveat, if you want to podfic, remix, translate, make fanart, or in any way transform any of my fan works, you go right ahead! Link me!

I do SPAG and basic beta reading for fic under 10k in any of the above-approved fandoms, too. Just PM me.

I heard the terrible news about [personal profile] minoanmiss last night, and I want to punch entropy in its face about it. But entropy doesn’t have a face, so we’re all kinda screwed. My heart goes out to her wonderful loved ones, and to the neighbors who her life had touched for the better. I hope she gets to donate her organs to others to live on, especially as doing so will hopefully piss off her parents (who richly deserve such) one last time.

I have been orbitally bombarding the ulcer with famotidine, Omeprazole, and trying to let go of stress once an hour. It seems to be doing some good? And I found some perfume samples on clearance from the December holidays at CVS, so I am also scent stimming intermittently.

I have a tiny, mild headache right now, so I’m studying for the jurisprudence exam and getting ready to take the test and do taxes tomorrow.
flamingsword: Tiny!Steve captioned Bad Body Day (Bad Body Day)
Currently, I have what is quite possibly a migraine? My brain feels like my cognition is normal but pain level is bad, light is more stabby than usual, sound is nauseating. Also since I’ve been having so many headaches, lately, I have been taking too many NSAIDs and have apparently given myself another stomach ulcer. So in all I’m doing great. /s 😅😩😣

I’m nearly done with the clinical volunteer hours for school, I’ll be done with those hopefully by next Saturday. On Friday I passed the national massage exam, the MBLEx, so now I just need to get the legislative exam taken care of before my paperwork is together for getting licensed in this state. And I would be studying for legislative test right now … if I didn’t have such an awful headache.

I just took the last of the Ubrelvy and I’m about to go take an anti-emetic bc that is feeling very necessary all of a sudden. This morning I started the two weeks of Omeprazole/stomach acid reducer pills that will help heal the ulcer (eventually). I just have to eat a fair amount of bread between now and the hypothetical day when my stomach will be healed up.

Wish me strength in the fight against the headache spirits, I guess. And for the ulcer to go the fuck away.
flamingsword: Tiny!Steve captioned Bad Body Day (Bad Body Day)
I take the MBLEx on Friday, but it would be so much easier to study if I didn’t have a headache …

Today has kinda sucked. Yesterday, instead of giving me two massages, a break, and then two massages, student clinic put my last three hours back to back. I went over budget on spoons and am sore, tired, and a general mess today. Also it’s cold again which adds half a point on the ten scale of my pain, so today was a 5, even before my head started hurting and I had to pop two aspirin and a cup of caffeinated tea. So my sleep tonight will be messed up, so I need to put a sleeping pill in my meds so I get real sleep as much as possible. I got shit to do tomorrow.

But despite pain etc. I got my physical, and I got blood drawn, and I called a friend, and everything else has been … sitting in a dim quiet room. I don't have enough of a brain to _knit_ right now … ugh. Hope your day is going better than mine.

Challenge #14

In your own space, create a promo and/or rec list for someone new to a fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I think I did a Star Wars one a while back, so now maybe it is time for #Batfamily Crack to get its own post.

In first place we have Jason Todd POV crack for GRATE JUSTICE: The Right Substitution is Key by AddictedApple

“The Red Hood has been good for Gotham,” Robin continued. “Crime in Park Row decreased by sixty one percent almost as soon as you showed up, and that’s even taking into account all the crime you commit. Drug overdoses have decreased by twenty two percent in adults and seventy nine percent in minors. Homeless minors are ninety two percent less likely to—”

“Kid,” Jason interrupted. “Enough statistics. What the hell is this about?”

Robin slowly lowered the tablet with his powerpoint presentation and looked up at Red Hood.

“You care about Gotham,” Robin summarised. “Gotham needs Batman. Batman is missing and so is Nightwing. We need you to fill in for Batman.”

“You want me to cover Batman’s patrols?” Jason clarified.

“No,” Robin said. “I want you to be Batman.”

Jason bluescreened.

(Or: Batman and Nightwing mysteriously disappear before Red Hood has even started antagonising them, Robin is desperate, Gotham needs Batman, and Red Hood is Batman-Shaped.)

Second and third place are a tie by the same author: Are My Riddles a Joke to You?
& Gotham Knockoff by Raven_of_Hydecastle. Both are more Tim-Drake-Robin centric, feral little shit that he is, and will make you smile 'til your face hurts.

There is not nearly enough Signal fic out there, but The Robin Declaration by waterunderthebridge12 is the best I've read for getting his characterization right while still being funny.

Is now the time to say that I am not really into Dick Grayson's headspace, and most of the Batfam stuff that is from his POV is not really that funny? Moving right along!

Steph! For Stephanie Brown, my beloved flower who hits like a truck, precious goblin mode girl: Sophomores by LakeAwen. Steph&Jason family bonding! Found family and crack: two great tastes that taste great together!

If you're in Maine or Philly or wherever the fuck Vance claimed DHS is going next, I BEG you to look at the rapid response and mutual aid networks and how they've been built in Portland, Chicago, and the Twin Cities, and start building your own version NOW.

Download signal if you haven't already. Pick a resistance pseudonym. Make a proton email that has no indicators to your real name. Start buying and printing whistles and whistle zines.

Organize your school patrols and foot patrols NOW. Talk to your community and your mercados and your Hmong and Somali grocery stores, ask them what support they need. Get "ICE are not welcome here" signage for businesses and homes. Familiarize yourself with the difference between an administrative warrant and a judicial warrant.

Learn how to take down a SALUTE report. PRACTICE salute reports. Learn, memorize, and embody radio etiquette for rapid response work.

Pick your lane: rapid response or mutual aid-- you can't do both, because rapid response often puts you in direct contact with ICE. They've been taking down plate numbers and leading responders back to their own homes here in the Twin Cities.

Remember that being under siege is a marathon, not a race. Explicit talk of dehumanizing ICE tactics )

Tumblr user kawaiiabetic:

Hey, Angeleno here to add: look for or start mutual aid groups that buy out your vendors, jardineros, tradespeople, helping support the most vulnerable members of your community from making the choice to stay home and safe or provide for family. We’re still doing this here and it helps.

“ICE NOT WELCOME” signs are great for solidarity and breaking morale, but please make and help pass out signs stating a home or business is private property. Make sure your business has an area explicitly for employees only. What we’ve seen in the last week makes all this seem like sticking a post-it on a viper and none of us know where we’re headed now, but it’s easy to do and could make a difference. It’s made a difference here.

TALK ABOUT A COMMUNITY SPACE YOU LIKE. It doesn’t need to be your favorite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it’s even one that you’ve barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community.

Is the #Batfamily Crack tag on tumblr a community? I mean we riff off one another enough to possibly qualify?

Challenge #9: Favorite Tropes

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

Curtainfics are so soothing when they're done well. I get that reading things with angst or action or people having giant realizations make for the usual sort of good reading that everyone wants to write. But when writers have the chops to make quiet domestic happiness into something meaningful and interesting - oh yeah. That's the good shit. Like, you see these characters who are used to every kind of violence and rootlessness? They get to go on the journey of being untrusting of their own happiness and slowly relaxing into coming to ground somewhere safe and someone loving and beloved. It appeals to the part of me that knows that Happily Ever After, or even Happy For Now is a lot harder than it looks to put any faith in for a certain kind of person.

And Found Family / Families of Choice are the stories that have taught me so much about how to relate to people I don't really understand. They're a happiness that reaches into my monkey instincts and says that I, too, can have a bigger tribe, that I, too, can fit into a tribe even if I don't understand the Rube Goldberg machine of moving parts in unusual shapes accomplishing amazing things together.

Challenge #10: Big Mood (Board)

CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU LOVE AND CREATE A MINI MOOD COLLECTION OF THREE (or more) ITEMS THAT EVOKE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT IT. You don’t have to limit yourself to visual media, or collect the items into a special format like a square (though you can if you’d like).

Post your answer to today's challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

I'm feeling Star Wars-y today, and I want to share some songs. Unfortunately, these are on Youtube, bc I lack other accessibility that is not equally terrible.

• Obi-Wan Kenobi - Brave - by Sara Bareilles
Nothing's gonna hurt you the way that words do
When they settle 'neath your skin
Kept on the inside and no sunlight
Sometimes a shadow wins
But I wonder what would happen if you
Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

• Anakin Skywalker - Alive - by Sia
I have made every single mistake
That you could ever possibly make
I took and I took and I took what you gave
But you never noticed that I was in pain

Ghost Company - Start a Riot - by Duckwrth and Shaboozey
Make way (make way)
I'm comin' through with my crew to make 'em pay
I don't need no super suit, I'm feelin' brave
Don't be a hero, turn around and walk away

Okay, so let me walk you through my creative process for the thing I’m going to make for one of my besties, I guess?

Summer top for [personal profile] ot_atma
• Information-overload-surfing / idea gathering: I pull up Ravelry or a web search prompt with “pattern” “knitting” “dk” “summer” and then words like top, tank, or shirt and then I start going through Ideas: “Would that look good on them?”, “Would that pull on their neck uncomfortably?”, “Would that technique be hard enough to learn from my current knowledge base that it will spur me on the whole project?”, “Is this stitch going to be too fiddly to be relaxing to knit?”, “The armscye of this pattern is too constricting but the neckline looks so cool, how could I replicate that on a different pattern?” And so forth until I have saved a small buffer of good ideas and things that either fit all my selection criteria or that I can use to make the thing look cooler or be more functional.

• I do forms of concept jamming play with fibers and knitting techniques and shapes: “What if I use this knitted pullover shirt pattern as the base, but with stretchy, shaped panels of brioche knitting across the front and back of the neckline, to make it easier to get on and off?”, and “What about this cooling, summer-weight cotton/bamboo blend will change the fit and drape of the pattern, and how will I need to account for that in what needles I use etc.?”, and “What if they want it entirely sleeveless but the pattern is written as a circular yoke? How would I account for that?” Those kinds of thought experiments are fun and like a background hum of pleased, gentle busy-ness. (It’s like my brain is a beehive of individual tasks all focusing in on one central purpose. It’s nice to feel like I have a purpose that I can fulfill at my own pace.)

• I play with the fiber and its properties by swatching and washing and drying and changing needles and repeating the process until I understand how to get the density or openness I want as well as being able to calculate the size the garment will turn out to be after the first washing, since some fibers tend to change shape/curl more/change size during the process of getting wet and then being dried.

• Then comes the part where I do the repetitive motion of knitting, which is like other kinds of stimming, except that when I’m done I have part of a sock or a sweater or a summer top. I move along the knitting pattern like one of those old school calculating machines moves along its program cards, and listen to podcasts and music and the sound of my own brain being reasonably quiet.

• And then I weave in the ends when it’s done, and wash it and pin it out to dry on blocking boards etc.. and then [personal profile] ot_atma will have a new summer top in a really breathable moisture-wicking fabric.

And I get to jump into the next project, and play with different concept, and learn new stitches or techniques, and make fun things to keep people comfy, and have my brain be full of happy bees, dancing maps and patterns.

1. I collect a lot of resources, and can figure out how to solve a lot of problems using them. Psych resources, therapy resources, internet and technology tutorials, guides for lots of different real world topics (I miss Expert Village so much y’all).

2. Despite being raised in judgment of myself and others, I have learned a lot of lessons about flexible boundaries, realistic and gentle expectations, and the overall re-write-ability of the social contract between individuals. It means I am a lot less likely to make judgments about things that do not directly harm others. (That being said, FUCK ICE.)

3. I am the creative type and tend to make things when I am not too busy to de-stress. It’s what I do to unwind. And since I have fibromyalgia, I need that time, since I am chronically sleepy and in a bit of pain at all times.

4. I handle pain pretty well. I can’t always use it as a whetstone to sharpen my empathy for others, but even when I can’t, I no longer bleed on people who did not cut me.

I think that’s the good stuff I like about myself today.

Top Ten 🔟’s
In no particular order
• You know who’s a 10? Elliot Spencer from Leverage. Even the Russian judge would have to give him the gold, in basically whatever he was competing in, and that could be anything. Walking competence porn.
• Dr. Samantha Carter from Stargate SG-1. I thought she was so cool that I got that haircut once. I should try to see if anyone local will try to recreate that 20000’s-era shaggy pixie cut.
• Chani and Muad’dib from Dune. I had crushes on the 80’s/David Lynch versions when I was a kid, but their modern adaptations aren’t half bad either.
• Cindi Mayweather / the Archandroid / Jane 57821 / Janelle Monáe. The Revolution Who Dances, the Dirty Computer, the Time-Traveling (possibly-multiverse-hopping), android of our dreams who will lead us past oppression and to the promised Wondaland - the place where creativity destroys oppression.
• Obi-Wan Kenobi, wandering monk of infinite suffering. You know, in all his Jedi-repressed buttoned-down-without-buttons glory, there is a certain je ne sais quoi about him that draws the heart of everyone who is trying, and failing, to hold back the tide of the worlds troubles from those he can’t admit the extent of his care for.
• Chidi Anagonye from The Good Place, because he cares. So much. About everything.
• Adorable Belle Dearheart AKA Spike AKA Killer from Going Postal of the Discworld books. I don’t hold with the smoking, so much, but she is a character after my own heart: fearless, rude, and an avatar of sarcasm.
• Cosmo Brown from Singin’ In The Rain. Funny and affable and cheerfully catty. So very queer-coded and visibly polyamorous with stars in his eyes for both Don and Cathy. Definitely a 10 out of 10.
• Garnet from Steven Universe, 7 foot tall lesbian alien rock. So very genderqueer, so very wise but constrained by the limits of her abilities.
• us. So much better than the fictional versions in our heads that we fear we are, or that we hope one day to become. Perfectly in this moment, because we are actually happening right now. Remember that sentient lives are always both a noun and a verb, because as much as we are a being, we are a doing, too.

So, who are your tens? Who are your problematic faves, your Han Solo problems, your “when they smile it makes me have a problem” characters?
