The Welcome Tour

The welcome tour walks you round Filamental one part of the screen at a time, says what each part is for, and then leaves you to it.

Where: Settings › General › Getting started › Replay tour · Keys: [→] or [Space] next, [←] back, [Esc] skip

What it is

A spotlight tour that runs over whichever project you have open. It opens by itself on your first run, once the other first-run windows (your details, and the welcome to the Help Playground) are closed, and again only when we change the tour itself, never just because Filamental has updated. You can replay it from Settings whenever you like.

How to use it

Starting it again

  1. Open Settings (the hamburger icon, top right).
  2. Under General, find Getting started.
  3. Click Replay tour.

Settings closes and the tour starts from the beginning.

Getting around it

  • Next →, the right arrow or the space bar moves on, and ← Back or the left arrow goes back.
  • Skip, or Escape, ends it at any point.
  • A couple of steps ask you to press something, such as the switch to the Publisher. Press the real control yourself, or use the card's Switch for me → button to do it for you.
  • If your project has no hub page yet, the Publisher asks you to choose one first. The tour waits behind that window and carries on once you've chosen.

What it covers

It starts in the Space Studio with your projects, the two studios, the left panel with its classifications, connectors and properties, the node panel on the right, 2D and 3D, templates, the auto layouts, the live physics and Settings.

Then it takes you over to the Publisher Studio for formatting and Page style, sharing and presenting, brings you back, and finishes by asking you to press Dark Energy.

Tips

  • The tour runs on whichever project you have open. The Help Playground, which you're reading now, is a good place to take it, since you can't break anything here.
  • A step that points at the node panel selects the first node for you if nothing is selected, so the panel has something to show.
  • Hover over any button afterwards and its tooltip says what it does. There are a lot of them, on purpose.

It doesn't change your project, apart from two things you do yourself. The Dark Energy press at the end rearranges it the way Dark Energy always does, and [Ctrl+Z] puts it back. And if the Publisher asks for a hub page and you pick Blank page (new), that adds a page called Home.

It's a tour of where things are, not a lesson in building a structure. For that, start with Your First Project.

How this helps you

  • Use it on your first day, so you know where things live before you need them.
  • Use it as a quick refresher after time away, or after we've added something to the tour.
  • Use it to show someone else around without having to explain it all yourself.
