“What do you mean by that? …Dad!”

Kagami sighs loudly as he remembers why he’s here at this fancy party, dressed up in a suit, feeling completely out of place. The reality of being the son of a rich man truly hit when his dad brought up networking and partnerships. He wishes he could say he was “threatened with a good time” but instead he’s debating whether it would be better to try to get another glass of water from the bar or pretend he really needs to use the bathroom. Because if he ditches early and his dad asks about this event… He knows how bad he is at lying, especially to people who know him well. Hell, when Kuroko came over earlier to help Kagami prepare, Kuroko immediately noted that Kagami needed no help with putting on a suit or tying a tie.

“You just needed moral support. Since this isn’t basketball.”

“Hey!”

But the promise of maybe… Kagami knows he’s terrible at making friends outside of basketball. He had figured this would be easier than some arranged first meeting, more casual. If only the people here were actually in his age range… Being hit on by a woman in her 30s, who told him he was such a handsome young man… then pointed at by kids younger than 10, who asked him what he ate to get so tall… Kagami has done his best to melt into the background, uncomfortable from the earlier interactions, but observing is about as interesting as watching paint dry. Can’t at least one person be around his age? Maybe early 20s?

A flash of red catches Kagami’s gaze. It feels familiar, so much that Kagami initially thinks he’s hallucinating. It’s been a month since that time…the longest and yet shortest 2 hours of his life. But then he sees red again, more clearly, and his breath catches in his throat. He knows that red hair…and those red eyes. He’s also very familiar with that height, that confident aura, and that voice…

“Kagami.”

“Shit!”

Kagami curses as he belatedly remembers Akashi Seijuurou is part of the rich and powerful Akashi family. Someone who would be at a fancy party like this, navigating it much more comfortably than Kagami would. Someone who would also key in on a newcomer and make them his target.

Kagami’s whole body freezes. Shit, he’s just so…nervous. For one of his biggest basketball rivals to see him in such a state…

“Or do you prefer Taiga?” Akashi takes one large step forward; Kagami takes one large step back. Instinctively, as if Akashi is the alpha and he is…

“While you may be a tiger on the court, you’re more like prey tonight.” Akashi laughs as he continues to move closer, as Kagami continues to move backward, until Kagami’s back is against the wall and Akashi’s right hand slams the space right by his face. “My prey.”

Kagami’s heart was already trying to beat out of his chest, but now every word out of Akashi’s mouth, said with that smirk, causes his cheeks to heat up. His face is probably as red as his hair, and he knows that Akashi is enjoying the hell out of this…torment.

“Aka—”

“She was right, you know. It is nice to see such a handsome young man here.” Akashi’s face moves in closer as he parrots what the older woman had said to Kagami earlier. His left hand grabs onto Kagami’s tie, tugs on it firmly. “The best catch here.”

“That’s not…mmph…”

That’s not true, Kagami would have said, had his mouth not been covered by Akashi’s mouth. A mouth that takes not just Kagami’s words but Kagami’s breath, Kagami’s being in a demanding kiss. Any advantage that Kagami had, like physical height or muscle strength, matters not one bit under Akashi’s control. Not that he really wants to fight it. There’s something…attractive, incredibly attractive…about the way Akashi acts. And there’s no basketball, no basketball team that Kagami is fighting for to mitigate this feeling.

“And you’re mine,” Akashi murmurs after that mind-blowing first kiss. He chuckles. “For tonight at least.”

Kagami doesn’t get a chance to protest. He doesn’t know how to protest against that mouth demanding a second, a third kiss. He barely knows what to do with his hands. They move forward…and land on Akashi’s hips. This causes Akashi to hum in approval. Which is a sound Kagami didn’t know he…wanted to hear from Akashi, directed at him. Actually there are a few things he didn’t know he wanted from Akashi, but Akashi’s demanding tongue is not allowing him to think upon this further. It’s just fire…and heat…and he forgets that they are at a fancy party, not exactly hidden from sight…or he doesn’t care…?

(Kagami receives a text message later that night which simply reads: Next time I’ll pick you up beforehand.)

OHHHHH oh oh oh!!!! The way Akashi just beelines for Kagami to put himself in his space and doesn’t easily let him slip away. I love how demanding Akashi is here and how Kagami is just forced to go along with it because what else can he really do? UGH this is SO good ive reread it a few times ty so so much 🥺

I saw Akashi kabedoning Kagami as a prompt and just had to find a way to make it happen! You had a great list of ideas - took a few of them and the fic started writing itself :D Glad you enjoyed reading it!

All of this, and he still hadn't dropped That Smile. Ichigo was still having to take Gin's word about the color of his eyes, and he found that... he did, in fact, take his word, despite Gin's history of complexity with the truth.

When Gin said, "I've always had a soft spot for stubborn and straightforward redheads," while running his hand through Ichigo's hair, he sounded sincere.

"Yeah, well... I've always had a soft spot for ... people."

A little huff, and the fox-face softened just enough for Ichigo to catch a glimpse of color. "Yes, I got that impression," Gin said fondly.

It's not unusual at all for the guys to see each others' bare bodies while changing in the locker. Everyone knows it's harmless and unavoidable, and some even give a sheepish smile and quick nod of apology before politely averting their eyes.

But Kagami can't help but feel that today, there seem to be more looks than usual. Glances, even, as if giving him a second — or even third — look.

When he catches Teppei looking at him with wide eyes, Kagami can't help but feel compelled to call him out.

"Hey! Is there something going on? You were staring at me just now." Kagami feels it's OK to be blunt with Teppei, who would be honest but tactful if the cause of all the staring is something bad.

"Ah. Sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable," Teppei says, rubbing the back of his neck. "I really didn't mean to stare. It's just…"

"What."

"Kagami, did you get engaged?" asks Teppei. "I couldn't help noticing that your ring looks different."

Kagami's hand flies to his neck. It's like a still burning ember in his hands, the 12-carat, Round Brilliant Cut diamond searing a hole into his palm.

"…Yeah." Kagami can't bring himself to lie.

"Whoa! Congratulations, Kagami, that's amazing!"

"What is?" Kogane pokes his cat face around a row of lockers, and Kagami immediately regrets his foolish honesty.

"Kagami and Himuro are engaged!" Teppei says proudly, his face beaming as if announcing the engagement of his own son.

"Oh my god! Oh my god! You and Himuro? Oh my god, that's so so so so awesome, Kagami! You and Himuro are going to be so happy together, congrats! Hey guys! Guys, guess what!"

Before Kagami can say or do anything, Koganei has scurried off, a still beaming Teppei following close behind. Kagami groans.

He's not sure what's worse: Going along with this misunderstanding, or telling the team that his fiance is actually Akashi.

Sunday is Kagami's favorite day of the week, especially when the weather is clear and just a bit warm, because he's able to play streetball from sunup to sundown. Today Kagami isn't the only high school basketball player out there on the street court. Two hours after joining matches on and off, Aomine and Kuroko show up, with Aomine being as insane as usual. An hour after that, Kise arrives. Now, late in the afternoon, after who knows how many matches…, he's facing Kise when an unfortunate thing occurs. He was probably too tired and should have taken that break instead of giving into Kise's provocations. Because Kagami goes for a stray pass, and at the last second, he twists a little bit too far and his left ankle…

"Kagami/Kagami-kun/Kagamicchi!"

Kagami finds himself on the ground with a throbbing left ankle. Damn, how embarrassing to do that in front of everyone, especially Kise and Kuroko and Aomine and…shit, is that Akashi? What is Akashi doing here…coming over here…to...?

"I'll take him."

Kise and Kuroko scramble aside, leaving Kagami alone…alone to be picked up by Akashi? Akashi lowering himself to his knees is already enough of a surprise for Kagami, but then Akashi lifts Kagami up, one arm under his thighs and the other under his back…in a princess carry?

"Wh-what are you…put me down!" There's no way Akashi could carry his weight like this for too long, right?

Akashi chuckles. "You're injured." As if Kagami is oblivious to the situation.

"Not that…" Kagami trails off, for his eyes have just caught the figures of Murasakibara and Midorima in the crowd. Is today supposed to be some Miracles meetup? Is that why they are all here in Tokyo at this street court and letting Akashi of all people lift him when Murasakibara is right there?

"I must take care of you properly."

"But by—"

"Don't worry. Akashi-kun is surprisingly strong. He will not drop you."

Yeah, as long as Kuroko doesn't suddenly surprise Kagami and cause him to jump out of Akashi's… Damnit, did Akashi's hand just tighten its hold…and slip under his shorts… Kagami groans and just covers his face. Kuroko supports Akashi, the others have said nothing nor made any counter move… Clearly everyone is enjoying his embarrassment.

"Kagami Taiga." The lowering of Akashi's voice, both in octave and volume, makes Kagami shiver. As if this is a moment just between him and Kagami. "Your basketball is mine. Your body is mine." Lips brush against his ear. "You are mine."

Kagami freezes. Did Akashi just…is this a declaration of war? Or a confession of…romantic intent? Either way, Kagami feels even more flustered. He does want…to fight Akashi again on the court. To be his target, to be his focus. It's just…

"I got the ice!"

"And the athletic tape."

"Thank you, Kise, Midorima."

Akashi smirks as he sets Kagami down, after the longest embarrassing minute of Kagami's life. Kagami obediently keeps his ankle elevated as Akashi removes his left shoe and left sock, carefully as if he's a prince tending to Cinderella's foot. Then as Akashi touches his skin in order to affix the athletic tape and the ice pack…

"Shit!"

Kagami can't help but swear. He's having a really bad premonition of his future. Because he has this strong feeling that Akashi is going to force himself into Kagami's life, for better or worse. So Kagami better like it…damnit, is that Kuroko laughing at the situation? Leaving him to the wolf…not in any sheep's clothing. Because Akashi is not hiding his intentions. So what will Kagami do?

(He still doesn't know, hours later, multiple text exchanges with Akashi later. At least only his heart is throbbing now…)

OH FUCK YEAH the way!!! Akashi just takes charge here and picks him up with no problem at all. SO incredibly good. Making Kagami squirm in his arms, and also so confused about his intentions. 😭 It’s SO good i loved reading this thank you so so much
