Reccer's Notes:

This fic series is sprawling and nonlinear, with most (but not all) of the fics in it being alternate epilogues to the first fic, Seventh Circle, Ninth Sphere, which is essentially Cloud whump. The author uses several different scenarios, including crossovers with her own and others’ fic universes, to explore how different circumstances might affect Cloud’s recovery from the events of that fic.

Most fics are gen with occasional background Zack/Aerith, except for one where Cloud ends up in the same dimension as a functional and happy AGZSC polycule that’s confused as to why this Cloud is so scared of Sephiroth. One fic is a Final Fantasy XV crossover.

In the initial fic, 7c9s, Sephiroth nonsexually grooms Cloud, tortures him, abuses him physically and emotionally, exposes him to active combat when he’s in the body of a young child, and uses mind-control on him. Through 7c9s and most of the recovery-focused fics Cloud is suicidal and he does make several attempts, but is always stopped. He also engages in self-harm (usually involving his wings) and sometimes denies himself food or medical care. He’s heavily convinced that his connection to Sephiroth makes him less than human and a threat to others around him. In some fics, he spends significant time convinced he’s hallucinating. He also experiences severe depressive episodes, dissociation, and derealization.

Reccer's Notes: I think this is the most poignant and otherworldly of all the SGA wingfics. Yes, John Sheppard is happy to suddenly have wings, courtesy of the usual ambush by alien technology, but the story's about him being too happy, and increasingly, alien and alienated. He's very nearly lost to the expedition, were it not for Rodney, who (not entirely voluntarily) joins him and ends up rescuing him. The trilogy's one of my very favourite wingfic stories, and highly recommended.

Alec is Magnus' guardian angel, tasked with finding him true love. Things don't go as planned, but they never really do.

Reccer's Notes: I started this fic expecting a fun, fluffy, and trope-filled story (which this is, don't get me wrong) but was pleased to find hidden gems scattered all the way through about growth, healing, and living vs. surviving.

Summary: There's an old tale that when all the crows leave the Burial Mounds, dynasties will fall. This proved true when the crows accompanied a powerful demonic cultivator to Nightless City, which turned the tide in favor of the Sunshot Campaign. The cultivator, known only by the title Yiling Laozu, disappeared soon after.

Thirteen years later, Lan Wangji is night hunting in Yiling with a companionable rogue cultivator who calls himself "Yuandao" and is frequently joined by a small group of very intelligent crows. The cultivators strike up a friendship of sorts. When LWJ returns to Cloud Recesses, they continue to correspond, using the crows as messengers. But when a night hunt leads a group of Lan juniors to Yi City, peril escalates, and the two friends meet once more.

Reccer's Notes: Heh, I'm sure you all caught "Yuandao" as what WWX teasingly gives as his name to MianMian in canon. This was written for the 2021 Reverse Big Bang. I wasn't sure what to call it but settled on "canon alternate reality" since their first meeting and subsequent canon events were so distinctive. Reccer's Notes: This is just sweet and charming; despite its length, it feels like a vignette. The story doesn't go anywhere or do anything... but who can resist a sapient, talking, baby dragon? Certainly not John, who is immediately drawn to the egg he and Rodney were led to by its dying mother. Rodney snarks while John acts like a broody hen until it hatches, and supports John as he stays with the dragon until he grows large enough to make the flight to Atlantis. Totally Atlantis, not a Pern crossover.

After he recovers and returns to the Heavens, LWJ keeps track of WWX but can't interfere with the mortal realm without causing dire consequences. When he's tasked to return to the mortal world, he must balance his fears for his love's safety with the precariousness of Fate.

Reccer's Notes: These immortals are neither omnipotent nor omniscient. WWX's uniqueness confuses them and leaves LWJ uncertain in his decisions for perhaps the first time in his long life. Written for 2021's Big Bang, it's enhanced with some lovely artwork. Enjoy.

Reccer's Notes: Kariye's an excellent writer so this is a treat - John does indeed pine for Rodney's wings, but in classic fashion he's fairly unaware of his own feelings which are a mix of attraction to and envy of the wings, and attraction to Rodney. He gets a bit obsessive and mildly stalkery, but it all works out in the end. Rodney's appropriately shocked and very Rodney-ish about the wings with a lot of initial denial and protestation, but he also comes to enjoy his new appendages and in the end they find ways to enjoy them together. Great writing, and an interesting read.

This was made for the Heart Attack Exchange in 2020 (an exchange where you have to meet an ambitious comic or fanfic goal in two weeks). The story itself is epistolary and takes the form of a romantic letter to the Far-Away Princess. The story is good; the art, however, is mind-blowing. The colors are vibrant; the winged character has wings that aren't conventional angel wing iconography and are actually based on a hawk; the rainforest is beautiful.

These dolls definitely put a smile on my face. They're not entirely made from fabric; the heads are wooden and there's a variety of materials used throughout. I've never made dolls but the technique looks really well done.

Crowley and Aziraphale are wearing canon-typical outfits and also have their wings out. There's some clever bits to the dolls, like using buttons to resemble Crowley's heavily shaded sunglasses in show!Omens.

Reccer's Notes: This is quite angsty in places as it's set in a dystopia where winged shifter humans are discriminated against in the USA, also Carson doesn't come off too well. Rodney accidentally falls off a cliff on a mission and John has to manifest his carefully concealed wings to save him - with inevitable consequences. It's a gripping story, and, of course, the team and their close friends triumph to some degree over the forces of evil, as do John and Rodney's feelings.

He doesn’t look like any picture of an angel Peter has ever seen. There should be an elegant swooping curve there, neat little rows of white or gold or silver, pointed tips flung far out from Stiles’ body and a halo above his head. If Stiles is an angel, the myths are all wrong.

Lovely slow-burn fic where Stiles discovers that he has wings and goes to Peter for help. There's great worldbuilding in this and the characterization is really solid.

Reccer's Notes: Wingfic! In the sense that Rodney makes John mechanical wings, and a cannon's involved. The joy of this story is that it's just over 1000 words of iambic pentameter blank verse and a fusion with Shakespeare's Richard III, where Rodney and John are in Richard's army as a new experimental... flying corps - well, John flies and Rodney's his tech support. Rodney gets cold feet about risking John just before the battle and is arrested and nearly beheaded, but thanks to the power of flight they live to fight or flight another day. It's a hilarious and brilliant tour de force and contains immortal lines such as: "Well, phras'ed thus, it does sound somewhat gross." Great stuff!

Summary: During the "Four Clans" (read Sunshot) Campaign, Lan Wangji is captured by the Wens while leading a raid. He's thrown in a cell, which holds another captive who introduces himself as Wei Ying. Between interrogations and subsequent isolation, they start to talk, slowly building a rapport. When Lan Wangji comes back from a particularly brutal session, Wei Ying cries over him, startling Wangji until he realizes he's receiving the healing tears of a phoenix.

Reccer's Notes: Although this takes place during canon time frame, things are radically different, especially Lan Wangji. In this reality, he hasn't had WWX to challenge his norms about what is right or wrong, what is black or white. But he's spent literally half his life at war, which tempers his rigidity and allows him to have more natural interactions.

I don't normally like hurt/comfort, since it's often unbalanced, but the hurt here is canon-typical and the comfort comes in equal measures. Enjoy.

Reccer's Notes: A Ladyhawke-based Sentinel cross with Hawaii 5-0 and NCIS, starring Tony DiNozzo and Steve McGarrett. They bonded at first sight, but were hit by a curse; each is their spirit animal (hawk and wolf) part time while the other is human; they see each other as human only for the few seconds of transition twice a day. With the help of the 5-0 team, they've made it work for two years, but things are getting worse. They have to find the curse-caster and force him to free them or they'll never have a normal life. All ends well, of course, after a thoroughly satisfying read.

Reccer's Notes: This is an emotionally strong story, where WWX's survival is perhaps more difficult than if he had died. He can't entirely break away from the cultivation world, but he crosses paths on his own terms, still trying to uphold justice while eking out a life for himself and his family. Enjoy.

Lucifer’s eyes darkened.

Yeah, that passage above neatly highlights what I love about this story. It's the quintessential hurt/comfort friendship fic. There's some blood & angst but ultimately this is a warm and fuzzy tale.

Reccer's Notes: This story is doubtless well known to SGA fans and is one of the major wingfics in the fandom. Rodney and several Marines are captured and experimented-on offworld by aliens after a mission gone wrong. Most of the others die, and Rodney ends up with enormous wings grafted into his back musculature. The story starts with the rescue led by John, and follows what happens thereafter as Rodney slowly adjusts, until another disaster off-world changes things much later. Unlike some other wingfic this is all about the whump, angst and hurt/comfort and is a somewhat grueling read (see the warnings above), as Rodney and the other survivor were forcibly modified to be part-animal and of course are traumatized by that, plus Rodney especially is in considerable pain, initially. John and Rodney become close during Rodney's difficult adjustment, partly as Rodney needs wing massages for the discomfort, and of course, John's fascinated by the wings. It's a powerful story and a great read.

Where the wings come into it... This fic has a pretty canon level relevance of wings. There's Lucifer chopping his off, Amenadiel stealing them, Amenadiel losing his. There's also a few short and angsty non-canon moments related to wings that I emphatically do not want to spoil. There's a lot more to the fic than wings, but wings are relevant throughout, much like canon. And yes, if you like wings, Lucifer may be the canon for you.

What else is there? The fic is a pre-canon story from Amenadiel's perspective as Lucifer takes the occasional excursion out of hell. There's a lot of sadness for Lucifer. There's also a lot of very clever and diverse sex throughout, including a footjob. Amenadiel has bad timing.

The two things I like most about this story are the scope and the POV. Later parts of the fic adhere pretty close to canon but there's a bit of celestial plot and jumping through history that really sells an old and immortal feel to it. I also like that Amenadiel is not... entirely sympathetic in his choices but a delight to read. I think it's a little tricky to find writing where a character is making a bad decision and the reader just has to sit with that.
