Also Bruce's line about how Pamela probably wants to kill him because Harley finds him hot :D Bruce being smart by playing dumb is one of my favourite things.

It's lovely to see these two women bond over their sons even before they really know who each other is. Also Alfred cameos at the end which is always fun.

Reccer's Notes: This fic is epic, with a blend of angst, hope, and action that I just love. It can be very atmospheric, and also has a lot of great action scenes. And it does an excellent job of leaning into all the pseudoscience comic book movie shenanigans to build a plot and character arcs that hang together for 152k words.

On every level, it's wonderful to read.

Reccer's Notes:
I'm reccing these two together because in my mind they fit perfectly like chapters. Both stories are set between seasons 2 and 3, with vignettes or flashbacks to events during season 2 (and during the Reach Apocalypse), but And There Will Be Safe Harbour was written first and includes more events from before the birth of the twins and It Goes Like This includes babies Don and Dawn as adorable trauma triggers. Both stories are about how Bart is and isn't dealing with being a refugee from an apocalyptic future that no one else knows about and no longer exists, and how the primary adults in his life struggle to help him through it. All of the adults are doing their best, and they are helping, but the narrative does not shy away from the fact that helping a traumatized teenager is hard. The Flash family is so powerful in these with how they band together to help their kid.

Reccer's Notes: This is a delightful fic, sweet and hot and funny. I love how both Sam and Bucky grow in this fic, and the way their relationship progresses so naturally. Napricot does an amazing job of writing Sam and Bucky.

For context, the story takes place almost immediately after Thanos's Snap at the end of Infinity War, when everyone is still reeling from the absolute apocalypse of everything.

When the then MCU TV shows were first airing on Netflix someone made a comment about how Claire Temple was the Phil Coulson of Marvel TV. In that she's hyper competent, mysteriously knows everyone, and shows up in everyone's story. This story is kind of the perfect culmination of that. The characters who show up at her clinic are super fun, some from the MCU (Frank Castle is very much his TV self, and Falcon and Winter Soldier show up together because of course), some from Marvel Comics (Squirrel Girl, my heart!) and Clint Barton could be from either.

Reccer's Notes: This is another well-known series, and the three longest SGA stories were in successive SGA Big Bang collections. I'm reccing 10 of the stories here, just those that are largely SGA, or that lead into SGA stories. After these 10 stories, the "superpower gifts" trope of the series continues in MCU/Captain America and Julie and the Phantoms fandoms. The core trope is that people with the ATA gene develop special gifts (superpowers) of various sorts, usually early in life, but sometimes not until they're adults. Those that don't are called "mundanes", as opposed to the "gifted". It's a bit like X-Men except that the gifted are largely appreciated and utilised in society, not feared and endangered. Another wrinkle in the world-building is that when someone uses their gift they deplete their glucose reserves, sometimes to a life-threatening degree. That gives you some idea of what I like about the series - the complex world-building, and how the "gifts" trope changes the events of SGA canon, and peoples' relationships. In addition, the writers build in extra complexities for both John (whose gift is feared by others, but especially by John himself) and Rodney (whose gift hasn't manifested when the series starts, and who envies the gifted). It makes for a very entertaining, interesting and gripping read, and there's lots of plot and action as well as angst and romance. Brief details, and the summaries for the stories, are below.

Summary: Bucky is so competent that it hurts my feelings is not a rational complaint to have about a person, and yet, after a year of being Captain America and partnering up with Bucky for the new and improved, post-Blip Avengers, that’s kinda how Sam’s feeling.

It’s not great. It maybe leads to Sam making some rash, ill-advised decisions like claiming he has a previously undisclosed superpower, and then getting caught in a web of lies when he ends up actually developing that surprisingly inconvenient superpower. Talking to birds had seemed like a harmless superpower, but it turns out that birds have a lot of opinions, and they don’t hesitate to tell Sam about them, especially when it comes to his supposedly subpar courting skills. Which is ridiculous, because Sam isn’t courting Bucky. Right?

Reccer's Notes: I love these stories, they are so funny and off-the-wall bonkers and sweet. There's a lot of great humor, fun adventures, sweet love, and a lot of birds with a lot of opinions on how Sam should run his love life.

Reccer's Notes: This series is hilarious. In the first story, Steve and Bucky get cursed into a body-swap, and have to go on a road trip to try and get themselves uncursed. On the way, they bicker like the emotionally-constipated old farts they are, while Peter Parker gets dragged along, alternately bored and mortified by their antics. Meanwhile, Peter is a teen who wants to be cool and grownup and mostly only ends up in trouble because he didn't think things through. Cue all sorts of humorous shenanigans. In the second story, Miles Morales accidentally gets swapped into the MCU, and Peter tries to hide out with him at Steve and Bucky's place. Cue even more humorous shenanigans.

This series is named "repairing the world" for two reasons. One is that the principle of tikkun olam, or "world repair", is a huge player in the personal philosophies and motivations of many of the principal characters. The other is that this is basically a big huge universe of fix-it fic that returns Superman to his Jewish origins, tosses out the gross stuff DC has generated over the years, and gives characters actual happy relationships and the chance to process and deal with their trauma without skimming over it for the sake of keeping everything the same. All works can be read as stand-alones unless otherwise noted.

Reccer's Notes: An uncannily perfect fusion of Akira (1988) and Wonder Boy by Tenacious D. I think there are a couple of other takes on this same concept, but this one is by far and away the best in my book. I first watched it around the time this vid was made, 2006 or maybe 2007, when it was recced to me by a friend who loved Akira. I've never forgotten it, and recently I went looking for it again and was beside myself when I found it. The serious subject matter fits so bizarrely well with the comedic song, and you probably won't think of the song the same way again after watching it. To me, 'Wonder Boy' will forever be about Kaneda and Tetsuo as a result of this vid XD

Sure, said curse also means he’s going to die sooner rather than later, just like his mother, but in the meantime Len has no intention of letting superheroes, time travelers, a surprisingly charming pyromaniac, and a lot of ghosts get in the way of him having a nice, successful career as a professional thief.

Reccer's Notes: LoT is one of those shows that you just have to vibe with. Does it have a consistent theory of how time travel works? ish? Do all the shows that are supposedly set in the same DC universe fit together? Sort of, when they have crossover episodes? But they're all fun. This story takes all the plot and characterization and worldbuilding elements of the first season of LoT, tightens them up, takes them seriously, adds magical powers for Snart (with incredible worldbuilding for them as well), and fits everything together beautifully. It's amazing.

This story leans into that, and then gives him a much better (but still not perfect) family in the Young Justice univers. (You don't have to know specific details of either comics or Young Justice, the story fills everything in.) Tim spends basically the whole series trying to get home in one way or another, but where "home" is changes. Lots of angst, but also lots of comfort and acknowledgment of suffering and healing. Interesting plot and great emotional arcs. I love it.

Reccer's Notes: Dark City was a 1998 Noirish SF movie about a guy named John who discovers that his entire city is just one big experiment being run by aliens ("Strangers") who alter the city and everyones' memories every night. They have an ability to manipulate reality and create matter out of thin air. John figures out he has this ability, and, with the help of Daniel, a human the Strangers forced to do their dirty work, John kills the Strangers. John then alters reality so that the city will be an actual functioning place. The end!

Except, the end of the movie leaves so many questions unanswered. Where the heck is the city? How did the Strangers create it and everyone who lives there? In this story, Daniel and John go looking for answers, and find them. It's about memory and choices and what we want to remember vs. what we can't forget.

Summary: This started off as yet another Halloween fic. And then it grew...

Reccer's Notes: in an early episode, the characters rent Halloween costumes from a magic costume shop and, while trick-or-treating, turn into the people they're dressed as. There are a lot of fic about what might have happened if one of the characters had chosen a different costume, some of them crossovers; this is my favorite. Xander dresses as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and after it's over, he's left with the knowledge of a Jedi. And uses that knowledge to bootstrap himself into being a Jedi. And has a lot of adventures and meets a lot of people along the way. And grows into a much more mature person than in canon. It's really long, but the best kind of longfic, one that sucks you in and keeps you reading to see what happens next.

I like the way the E.R. characters are folded in to the X-Men universe and story. Very well written.

Reccer's Notes: You know those crossovers that happen when the same actor is in two different media properties? This is one of the best. Of course the people who were experimenting and using mind control on mutants would do the same to immortals, if they knew immortals existed. And of course merely being in a base that was flooded and ended up under a lake would not be enough to kill an immortal. A grieving Scott and Wolverine pull Methos out of the lake, and the X-Men learn about immortals. And of course Duncan, who never met an underdog he didn't love or a good cause he wouldn't fight for, would become an X-Men given the chance. The author has all the characters spot-on, but I especially love their characterization of Methos.

Reccer's Notes: This is an AU take on how Diana came to Man's World, and why.  I love how well everyone is written; even though the relationships are different, they all sound like themselves.  Bruce is the professional paranoid that we all know and love (and seeing him through the eyes of a Diana who doesn't know he's Batman brings an unexpected dimension to the story and to both their characters).  Diana is strong, determined, and while she doesn't know enough about Man's World to pick up on all the undercurrents, she's a canny operator in her own right who accomplishes her goals with flair and directness.  I love the ending!

Reccer's Notes: This is a classic crossover type that you don't see as much of these days, which takes advantage of an actor appearing in two different franchises. In this case, James Marsden played Scott Summers in X-Men and Richard White in Superman Returns. Katt took that fact, did some interesting worldbuilding, and wrote a great series.

Reccer's Notes: [archiveofourown.org profile] nwhepcat is one of my favorite Buffy authors, and this is one of my favorite of their fics.  It feels like a plotline that could have been part of the show, and I love the way the author writes the characters with all their canonical flaws and bad points, but without ever crossing the line into bashing.  It makes it feel very real and true to the show.  If you don't like exploring the ambiguity or questionable decisions of the show, this isn't for you; but on the other hand even while leaning head-on into a few of the show's dark places, nobody is evil or a villain.
