But Sauron, who was also in Eä, did NOT.

Reccer's Notes: Elisif’s retelling of The War of the Ring in Seussian rhyming verse, firmly informed by The Lore, maps the Shire onto Whoville without introducing an anachronistic Christmas (that’s for Narnia.)

And then, in proper cumulative Tumbloric fashion, english-history-trip proceeds to remix Seussian illustrations to match. (Spoiler: Sauron does not experience redemptive cardiac enlargement; another character gets to preside over the grand climactic celebration.)

Creator Links: MSSalieri on AO3, Salieri's old website
Themes: Mystery and suspense, Friendship, Cops and Crime, AU: Fork in the road

Summary: He’s in a booth around the corner, hands folded on the Formica table. It’s his jacket, the one he had on when he jumped onto the train, so Ray believes it’s him. But it’s not the guy Ray knew. His hair hangs to his collar. His eyes are dark with exhaustion, his face gaunt. He’s been gone nineteen months. It might as well be nineteen years.

Dief’s whine is thin, a little panicky. He’s shivering against Ray’s knee.

“Hello, Ray,” Fraser says.

Reccer's Notes: This is a tough story, but I keep going back to it from time to time because it's just so good. Set more than a year after Ray Vecchio stumbled and missed the shot so that Fraser left with Victoria on the train, Ray meets up once more with a very changed Fraser in a motel at the ass end of Canada, in a blizzard. It's sad, spooky, and wonderfully written. Powerful and haunting, and very much worth a read.

Summary: Welcome to Off the Grid at Chez Hilda, updated every Friday or whenever I feel like it. My artwork is at the Patreon link, and I don't need to remind lovely folks like you to like and subscribe, now do I?

Reccer's Notes: Hilda in 2020 is a rural lifestyle vlogger, addressing her audience from COVID quarantine and coping with lockdown in her characteristic down-home resourceful fashion (chaining canon illustrations into a storyline.)

The modernized context turns her repurposable-as-clothing floursacks into a vintage estate artifact, rhyming two historical periods of struggle and make-do as she renders them into masks. In the course of her expositions on things like feral cat rescue and wafflemaking, she casually drops evidence of an impressive and wide-ranging education; this is a woman who, in her witty conversational folksiness, gladly learns and gladly teaches. (Wonder if she and Manly Wade Wellman’s John the Balladeer ever met?)

This Hilda lives in a community, though; as the quarantine grinds wearily on, she grows increasingly fretful in her seclusion, mounting the soapbox to rant about neighbors who refuse to mask or isolate (this is 2020, before vaccines became available), and the parasocial companionship of her audience becomes increasingly precious.

Oh, and Hilda shares a recipe for her hybrid sourdough/baking powder waffles, complete with considerate substitution suggestions for various dietary limitations. (“This batter keeps in the fridge for a couple days, allegedly. I’ve never managed to test it.”)

Summary: When a scientific mission goes wrong, the Daedalus crashes on an ice planet along with Atlantis's top scientists and a ruthless saboteur. Will rescue come before injuries and the elements take their toll? Roughly season two era.

Reccer's Notes: This is a gripping, full-blown novel. The Daedalus crash-lands on a Gateless, uninhabited, icy planet while carrying a number of Atlantis personnel (Rodney, Radek, Elizabeth and Cadman), while back on Atlantis, realising something's gone badly wrong, John, Simpson, Carson, Lorne, et al try frantically to locate them, then to reach them by puddlejumper. It's a thriller about surviving both a disastrous crash and the freezing, inhospitable planet, plus searching for the saboteur or saboteurs who caused the crash. There's tons of detail about how the two groups separately work together to survive, and to find and reach the crashed ship, and then once the relief party arrives their troubles aren't over, with the saboteur still working against them and the logistics of only having puddlejumpers to perform a complex rescue. Sholio weaves it all together masterfully and it's an extremely good read with excellent worldbuilding, better than most pro thrillers. Highly recommended.

Reccer's Notes:
This tour de force is a novel-length story by [personal profile] kristen999, assisted by everybetty, an historical AU set in Papua-New Guinea, in WWII. It's pretty male-centric because of that, but does include Teyla as a local liaison with intel about the enemy. It's got lots of plot, great action and adventure, and an excellent sense of place - you can almost feel the tropical heat making you sweat and hear the mosquitoes whine. The story is illustrated throughout with lots of period photos from the time. It's told from all of the team's POVs, particularly John's (he's a pilot, of course, with Rodney and Ronon on his flight crew). Naturally, John gets thoroughly whumped, in the best genfic tradition. There's tons of atmosphere, friendship and teamwork, and it's a really great read.

Creator Links: dossier on AO3
Themes: Working together, Character development, Teamwork, Action/adventure, Genfic

Summary: I had set the galaxy afire because she had given me her loyalty and trust.

Reccer's Notes: Yes, it's MCD, but hear me out. Dossier creates an AU story of Sheppard as Laurence of Arabia, eventually saving Pegasus from the Wraith. Like Laurence, he dies in a motor vehicle accident, which happens right at the start so you know what you're in for. The structure works well - a 3rd person account of his death, then the story itself from the expedition's arrival in Atlantis, told in John's first person POV like T. E. Laurence's "Seven Pillars of Wisdom", then a last 3rd person section about his death and the birth of his legend. Sheppard doesn't mercy-kill Sumner in this - he remains ostracised and mistrusted by the mainstream military and carves out a role for himself by "going native" and working together with Teyla and the Athosians, and eventually other Pegasus peoples, finally masterminding an alliance that destroys the Wraith, but being wounded himself and losing 20 or so years from a Wraith feeding. As with Laurence, he's ultimately tormented by the deaths he feels responsible for along the way, especially the massive genocide of the Wraith, and he dies on Earth, alone and largely unrecognised. But in Pegasus, it's a very different story. Not a comfort read, but a powerful and well-told story that fits Sheppard's character.

Summary: One for Sandman fans: I had a dream of Morpheus, who saw an invasion of earth that would go through the dreaming to reach target. Morpheus, who foresaw the plan even as it was being dreamt up by the aliens, was obligated to mount a defense. He recruited two sleeping Green Lanterns, one of Alan Scott of Earth and one Tomar-Re.

Author’s Notes: People are always telling me to keep a dream diary, this is a concession.

Reccer's Notes: Raw dream content notoriously tends to be some-assembly-required narrative material, but in a 29 August 2010 LiveJournal post(2), Woosey described this downright jackpot he received from Dreamland: a cool premise complete with plot, grand spectacle, a firm grounding in the canon lore (note the smooth incorporation of the various Elseworlds Batman scenarios), implicit invitation to the audience (what would you have been doing during the Big Event?) and a clear if haunting resolution. Summary: How do Molly's claws and lenses actually work? Kumiko pries. (Missing scene from "Mona Lisa Overdrive.")

Author’s Notes: If you havne't read MLO yet, I won't spoil anything. I'll just set the scene, without giving anyway any important story elements: Molly is now middle-aged, goes by "Sally Shears," and is working as a body guard for a Japanese girl named Kumiko.

I do not own "Mona Lisa Overdrive."

This oldie was written probably over ten years ago. I originally posted it to Fanfiction.net, then took it down, feeling it was pointless. But in light of the new "Neuromancer" show coming out, I want to preserve this little ficlet, to see how my fanon explanation for how Molly's claws work compares to what (if anything) the show gives us regarding that explanation. After a quick re-read, I decided that no edit was needed. What you see here is what I originally posted ten or eleven years ago.

Reccer's Notes: This vignette expands upon an exchange in Mona Lisa Overdrive between aging cyborg mercenary Sally Shears (AKA Molly Millions, Cat Mother, Steppin’ Razor, Rose Kolodny, and Misty Steele—this lady’s got more names than a Wuxia hero) and her charge Yanaka Kumiko; Sally confides measured bits of her backstory to the crushstruck Kumiko, including stripping to bare a torso-long scar (from a near-fatal cagefighting injury, kept “to remind her of being stupid.”)

It’s a precious moment of trust, an elusive commodity in both women’s lives; LizzyChrome elaborates upon this to let Sally hold forth on how her prosthetics work—a question that Gibson chose to bury under Rule of Cool, and that’s challenged two generations’ worth of illustrators and cosplayers.

With the upcoming Neuromancer series on Apple+TV, Molly finally leaves the roster of visually iconic SFF characters not yet defined in the popular imagination by a screen adaptation (1). The Molly in my head admittedly didn’t resemble Briana Middleton, but I look forward to seeing her interpretation of the role (as well as how faithful to the spirit of the book the script gets to be, now that Hollywood has gotten their hands on

(A) a Beloved Property™,

(B) whose cyberpunk dystopia is feeling uncomfortably real in a number of respects—thanks in no small part to megacorporations like Apple.)

(1) Gully Foyle from The Stars My Destination and Elric of Melniboné also come to mind.

I love how she immediately clocks Atlanna as "strange and possibly dangerous" and so decides to strike up a conversation. Author’s Notes: For [archiveofourown.org profile] moonlight69.

I needed to introduce a few additional characters to Hilda’s mainly single-panel world, so I did a mash-up with Norman Rockwell’s “Fixing a Flat.” Think of it as the Illustrationverse.

Reccer's Notes: A rec posted in honor of the U.S. Full Strawberry Moon, for reasons that will be apparent in the fic.

Moon Custafer constructs a story from several Hilda panels (plus a special guest Norman Rockwell work), in which Duane Bryers’ zaftig hillbilly wood nymph comes to the aid of two travelers stranded in the boondocks—a predicament complicated by a less friendly local. (A temporary problem-solving alliance (particularly against a common enemy) can count as a relationship, right?)

Hilda as portrayed in Bryers’ artworks seems to embrace solitude, and the scant fanfic I’ve seen doesn’t tend to show her interacting face-to-face with much of anyone but her animal friends and the odd Authorial Proxy; it’s fun to watch her socializing, and to see her given family, friends, enemies, and a history. (As well as actual clothing that she presumably wears now and then to pick up her crackers, trashy novels, and repurposable-as-clothing floursacks.)

A dramatic reading of pakhnokh's comic.

Reccer's Notes: Chapter 75 of the novel briefly mentions Wei Wuxian having to defend his Burial Mounds territory against his unwelcome fan club of Black Magic Edgelords; MDZS cartoonist extraordinaire Pakhnokh recognized a gift-wrapped opportunity for methodical David Attenboroughesque narration. And Esbielle then proceeds to run away with the idea further in audio: the background music is neatly calculated, and I particularly lost it over the one Yiling Laozu groupie belching, “DEEEEATH!” (Were he not throwing a full set of horns, it’d be tempting to flag him as Xue Yang.)

Reccer's Notes:   There are a few really good Christine Everheart stories out there, but this is my favorite.  It hits my competence!kink very hard.  Christine is an ambitious, hard-hitting reporter, and this fic shows that to a tee.  Handed a puff piece on the late Mrs. Maria Stark, Christine realizes that there is something fishy, and goes digging.  I love watching her figure out how to find the pieces to the puzzle, and then put them together, and I love learning about Maria Stark, too.  Very well done and worth the read.

Summary: okay hang on, I’m still thinking about touch-starved Wei Wuxian in the Burial Mounds, because this is such an important time in his life

we talk about his childhood in Yunmeng, his time in Gusu; we speculate about those three months in the Burial Mounds, but those months (years?) he spends living with the Wen refugees, that unthinking kindness, that deep mutual appreciation, that love for quiet, simple joys despite all the darkness around him make him into the Wei Wuxian we know and love by the end of the story as much as any of the previous stages in his life

and yes, Wei Wuxian’s return to the Burial Mounds is horrible – he’s terribly, painfully, dreadfully lonely, separated from the siblings he once promised to go through everything for, isolated in the very place that both saved him and destroyed him, eking out a frantic, desperate existence from the soil of a corpse-mountain with no change, no future, no respite in sight

but at the same time, the Burial Mounds is one place in the world where he doesn’t need to hide

Reccer's Notes: A vignette of platonic mutual caregiving between hard-pressed Science Sibs Wei Wuxian and Wen Qing in the Burial Mounds, in which Wen Qing seizes upon Wei Wuxian and delivers a medical hand massage (with the clear understanding that she’s teaching him to return the favor.) The lengthy title is mine, derived from its Tumblr URL.

____

Gomez and Morticia did not raise a good Christian, God-fearing family, and they're quite proud of that. With a new baby to teach and a curious Joel Glicker around the house, they're eager to fully embrace traditions from both sides of the family, and show everyone what makes the holidays truly special to them.

Author’s Notes:

Prompt 16: The Addams Family learn about their ethnic cultural background! Castillian (Gomez) and eastern european, possibly jewish, culture (Frumps). All ratings accepted. No incest, pedophilia, bestiality, or non consensual behavior. Writer must do research about cultures discussed to create a respectful and accurate representation and celebration of the Addamses as the multicultural household they are.
_______

Don't mind me, just projecting onto The Addams Family again lol. At this point a staple of my fics is gonna be "X character is ____ because I said so." Though most of the Judaism in this is just from, yanno, personal experience, I did a LOT of research for this fic, especially for all the Spanish traditions. It was very fun. Basically all the traditions mentioned are very much based in reality, albeit with an Addams twist! Content warning for references to shitty parents, but it gets resolved in the end I swear to god lol. Enjoy!

Reccer's Notes: In which the Addams household honors and fuses Castillian Spanish Catholic Gomez’ and Ashkenazic Jewish Morticia (née Frump)’s respective raucous holiday traditions, welcoming Joel Glicker, Wednesday’s friend from Camp Chippewa, as their guest.

This fic is a gleeful reminder of all the riotous, macabre, bawdy, and defiant winter holiday traditions that existed centuries before Karen and Ken from the HOA even drew breath, let alone learned the word “beige”; Frank the Christmas Gargoyle would fit in quite happily. And the author does not miss the obvious parallel between “We gladly feast on those who would subdue us” and “They tried to kill us; we won; let’s eat.” Or Gomez’ paternal realization that the Massacre of The Innocents would’ve claimed baby Pubert.

(The prickly 50’s sci-fi Frump family menorah is a real thing, by the way):

Author’s Notes: My daughter told me she wanted me to write down her story. I figured I'd share it here because why not. So yes, this was quite literally written by a five year old. I just added punctuation. I found it adorable.

Reccer's Notes: I’ll admit that I don’t even go here (my knowledge of the Nintendo mythoi comes largely by osmosis), but I was delighted by Fuzzi_Fox’s readiness to support her daughter in a shared interest, and by Fuzzi_kit’s creative use of gaming strategy in having Team Hyrule exploit Ganondorf’s curse to their own advantage. It focuses on SecUnit-3, newly freed by Murderbot and accompanying Amena, Murderbot, Ratthi and several others to the Pansystem University of Mihira and New Tideland. There, Three gets caught up in an adventure while trying to understand what the humans are on about, and what its own purpose might be. Summary: Nie Huaisang loves beautiful things, and plucking game birds is an exercise in destroying something beautiful. After which it's an exercise in picking off tiny bits of fluffy down that hide in the crevices and don't want to come out, and that's just annoying. He might hate doing this, but he does know how, so the motions come easily.

The Nie were butchers, after all.

Reccer's Notes:

Set during the Wen Indoctrination; bird lover and Non-Action Guy Nie Huaisang draws upon his bird-catching skills and familial background in butchering to feed his friends in a desperate survival situation—and darned if this joking play on a trope name isn’t a moving and insightful character study. OR

Billy gets adopted by the Batfamily while trying to deal with a strong magical enemy.

Reccer's Notes: You know how Bruce Wayne compulsively adopts black-haired orphan children? And that describes Billy Batson (Captain Marvel)? This is one of several fics where Bruce adopts Billy, in this case without figuring out that he's got an alter-ego of Captain Marvel. Billy-as-Captain-Marvel's current case is interesting, the emotional beats of Billy joining the family are great, and the secret identity shenanigans are lovely.

Summary: It was not with heavy heart that Paladin Took approached the Bird's Nest. But his ribs might've been weighty and his liver positively annoyed, and not just from the many fine ales and finer wines he'd consumed throughout his life. It was that damn Lotho again, Lotho Sacksville-Baggins from up Hobbiton way with his air and his Big Men—well, two could play at that game! And if anyone was going to be calling themselves "Chief" in this day and age, it would be the right and proper Thain of the Shire!

His blood up, he knocked rather hard on the oversized door. "Maggie! Are you in there? Open up!"

Reccer's Notes: Maglor ends the Silmarillion wandering aimlessly forever alone along the beaches of Middle Earth, wailing and bemoaning and singing the tragedy of ... well, the entire Silmarillion, basically. A lot of fics have him turning up somewhere, and this is one of my favorites. Hobbits don't really care about all that ancient history (Bilbo aside), and they're just the sort of practical, compassionate people who might take in Maglor and give him a home.

And then the events of LotR happen, and Saruman shows up in the Shire as revenge for what Merry and Pippin did, and Frodo's destruction of the Ring.

Since the books focus on Miles, we never really get any resolution to this. Miles tells him to talk to Aral and Cordelia about it (they were his guardians and regent growing up, and they knew his father). Summary: A vignette set during the episode Epiphany.

Reccer's Notes: This is an excellent missing scene as canon somewhat glosses over how adandoned John felt during Epiphany. It's brought home here as we see the initial days from John's POV. In canon we're in the rest of the team's POV mostly, as the writers explain the time dilation field to us. But John has zero idea what's going on and is increasingly worried. Angry at the delay, yes, but imagining all sorts of reasons, and fearing that something terrible's happened to them. Then the pack is thrown through after two days when dehydration is becoming a real issue, with very little in it and no explanation. It feels like a fuck you, and John's abandonment issues from his crappy family and failed marriage kick in. Maybe Rodney should have taken the time to scribble a brief note? But that might have delayed John receiving the pack another day, and Rodney, of them all, was running the numbers in his head, panicked by how much time had already passed. It's a real window into John's psyche, angsty and very well written. You need to be logged in to read it.

Given his charisma and the narrative thumb on the scales, it's easy to forget just how bonkers things are ... and that even if the universe does warp to Miles' will, it really shouldn't, logically. So, for instance, despite the fact that Miles thinks Galeni shouldn't be penalized for his actions in Brothers in Arms, and it's totally understandable to the reader, the military hierarchy would probably have a different view.

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Characters/Pairings: Gen: John Sheppard, Henry Wallace, Todd
Rating: Teen
Length: 1016
Content Notes: Xparrot chose not to warn. But this is Millers Crossing, so it's a darker side of John.
Creator Links: Xparrot on AO3
Theme: Missing scenes, Genfic

Summary: Missing scene to "Miller's Crossing." There are many universes, but this is the one where he walks one step behind Henry Wallace.

Reccer's Notes: This is short, and packs a powerful punch. The scene is implied in canon, but we don't really see it. Xparrot takes us into John's mind at the crucial time, and reminds us of his link with Todd, and the implacable consequences of his bond with Rodney. It's a story that stayed with me for quite some time after I read it.

Theme: Trope Subversion & Inversion, Asexual & Demisexual Characters, Canon LGBTQ+ Characters, Friendship, Gen, Soulmate-Identifying Marks

Summary: he was one of the few people he knew who thought that way. the only person, actually. the rare others were indifferent to the idea at most, like veronica, who boldly declared she didn't want a mark tying her down until she was ready to do it herself. even she still thought it would be kind of cute (and a convenient way of getting archie to choose her, not betty, because of course he would be her soulmate).

jughead was the least deserving person, possibly in the whole world, to get a soulmark.

so, naturally, the universe granted him one anyways.

fantastic.

.

or, the one where jug and archie are soulmates and jug has a breakdown about it.

Reccer's Notes: I love this interpretation of an aroace in a world where soulmarks are a scientific fact. Jughead's angst is super relatable, and his friendship with Archie sincerely sweet!

Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones
Rating: gen
Length: 4677 words
Author Links:  [personal profile] girl_wonder
Theme: trauma, black character, outsider POV, crossover, character of color, competence, family, gen,

Summary: After the year that wasn't, Martha tries to move on with her life.

Reccer's Notes:  This is another excellent look at Martha after the Year that Never Was.  She walked the world, survived a year in terrible conditions as the Earth was destroyed around her, and then had to go back to a normal every-day life as if nothing had happened.  And then she gets assigned to the Atlantis Expedition ....

I love Martha's reaction to the ordinary world, and her relationships with Jack Harkness and Harriet Jones, and her outsider perspective on the Atlantis Expedition, and the way she handles both Rodney and Ronon.

Rating: teen

Theme: trauma and recovery, family, domestic, gen, time loops

Summary: There's a time loop that only Jason remembers. It acts as a catalyst for changes within the family. Some arguments, some misunderstandings, some bonding, some healing, and quite a lot of conversations that mostly take place over food.

Reccer's Notes: Everyone knows something happened to Jason during the time only he remembers, but figuring it out takes time and care.

Rating: Not Rated
Length: 29k

Theme: trauma and recovery, worldbuilding, old fandoms, gen,

Summary: In the aftermath of the Minbari civil war, Lennier, Shaal Mayan, and Shakiri face a long road home.

Reccer's Notes: When Babylon 5 began, no Minbari had killed another Minbari in a thousand years. By the end of it, Minbari had killed one another wholesale in a civil war. The show doesn't handle what that must have done to people and to their culture; this story dives deep into it in a thoughtful way.

Theme: disability, amnesia, trauma and healing, gen, old fandoms, book fandoms, small fandoms,

Summary: There are some things Bertie can't talk about with Jeeves. Or what happened after Sir Roderick came to lunch

Reccer's Notes: It is an oddity of Wodehouse's writing that World War I never seems to have happened. Although his books take place in some vague Jazz Age era, focusing on men who would have almost certainly been of age to fight in the war, it's never mentioned once in all his books, nor even alluded to. This is an omission that fanfic fixes; there are several fics where Bertie and/or Jeeves was in the War, with various explanations for why they never mention it.

In this story, Bertie has been struggling with PTSD (then called shell shock, with no real treatment) for six years, and covering it up as best he can with jokes and a vapid exterior because he's terrified of being thought mad. It's not sustainable; something has to give. And it does.
