Summary: Sedoretu AU. Glimpses from the marriage of Fraser, Ray K, Maggie, and Frannie.

Reccer's Notes: I love the 4-person marriage invented by Ursula Le Guin - the sedoretu - and [personal profile] luzula makes it work perfectly here. In this 'verse there's the category of gender, plus another category called moiety - morning and evening people. In a sedoretu there are two same-sex and two opposite-sex couples, and two pairings (morning-morning and evening-evening) that are forbidden. Here, the forbidden pairings include the half-siblings, Fraser & Maggie. Luzula writes them all beautifully and lets us see how well this poly marriage works. We also get glimpses of how the sedoretu is the usual form of marriage in this AU, with their parents also in sedoretus. Domestic and lovely.

Content Notes: Creator chose not to warn. This has at least a hopeful ending, but the fic is about zombies and Ray kills and eats at least one victim, plus there are some slightly gross descriptions in places. Way less gore etc. than most zombie stories, though.

Themes: Crack treated seriously, Friends to lovers, Friendship, Complete AU, Zombies, (Not really) character death, Epistolary fic

Summary: Ray Kowalski thought he had an okay existence: he had a place to call home, didn't have to worry about a job, and nobody bothered him. If it wasn't for the fact that he was a zombie, things would have been pretty good.

Then he met very much alive Benton Fraser, and his whole world was turned upside down.

Reccer's Notes: And the trifecta of cracky fantasy creatures: zombies. This story's based on the movie Warm Bodies, which also takes the cracky zombie premise kind of seriously, in a romantic way. Zombies are usually shown as mindless ravening hordes, but in this story both Rays have been zombified but haven't completely lost themselves. Here, zombies are called "the infected", and both Rays begin to mysteriously improve across the story, regaining more speech and cognitive ability. Apart from the relationship with Fraser that develops - and we also access Fraser's POV from his journal entries - there's a nice friendship between the Rays. There's one major story, followed by a number of short fics adding to the 'verse. A rather lovely and poignant take on zombies, that more seriously explores a possible at least partial recovery from that state, and developing relationships.

Summary: Ray and Fraser discover that someone's been writing stories about them. Slashy, slashy stories.

Reccer's Notes: This is set after canon, during Ray and Fraser's quest. They've become minor celebrities in the wake of the big submarine/terrorists drama and when they briefly hit an outpost of civilization (a motel with internet), Ray checks his email and finds Frannie's sent him a link to a fanfic someone's written, called "Snowfall in Summer". Hilarity then ensues as they decide to read it together, and it leads to Ray making a big decision. The cracky premise is the existence of fanfic about them, and as far as possible, dance_across shows us how that might actually pan out. In a romantic way, of course, with a hopeful ending! It's a lot of fun.

Summary: He’s in a booth around the corner, hands folded on the Formica table. It’s his jacket, the one he had on when he jumped onto the train, so Ray believes it’s him. But it’s not the guy Ray knew. His hair hangs to his collar. His eyes are dark with exhaustion, his face gaunt. He’s been gone nineteen months. It might as well be nineteen years.

Dief’s whine is thin, a little panicky. He’s shivering against Ray’s knee.

“Hello, Ray,” Fraser says.

Reccer's Notes: This is a tough story, but I keep going back to it from time to time because it's just so good. Set more than a year after Ray Vecchio stumbled and missed the shot so that Fraser left with Victoria on the train, Ray meets up once more with a very changed Fraser in a motel at the ass end of Canada, in a blizzard. It's sad, spooky, and wonderfully written. Powerful and haunting, and very much worth a read.

Reccer's Notes: This gripping and spooky story starts with a different version of Fraser's chase and snowy huddling with Victoria, then segues into current (AU) canon with Ray Kowalski baffled by the big, black, mysterious, wolflike dog that intermittently appears on his fire escape, trying to get in, sometimes with Dief trying to chivvy it away. Also, Fraser's been distancing himself, and when he finds out about the dog's visits he's most unhappy. Things get weirder, and Fraser gets weirder, and then Victoria returns to push them all into crisis. The ending took me by surprise, and I liked it a lot! An excellent read.

Summary: "What the hell is this, an Austen novel?"

Reccer's Notes: Complete AUs are unusual in due South, and this is that rarity, a dS AU set in academia. Fraser is a new professor, looked down on by his colleagues as he's from the University of Guelph, and only Ray Kowalski, a punky, nonconformist professor, befriends him. They both have offices on the unpopular top floor (Fraser as he's bottom of the pecking order, and Ray as he likes to get away from the rest of the department), which helps kickstart their friendship. The story is about the highs and lows of academic life and there are some great sections showing Ray's unconventional teaching style which the students love, and Fraser's more traditional, but solid, approach. There's academic politics and also drama with the return of Victoria, Fraser's ex and his academic rival. It's about character development, and about Fraser and Ray's friendship which blossoms gradually into much, much more. The fic's beautifully written, and an extremely good read - highly recommended.

The familiar due South characters and settings are translated into space, with their base being on the Spaceship Chicago, and Vecchio in trouble over at spacehub Vegas. Summaries: for Real Boys:
Ray looked out from between his fingers. The creature was there, on the other side of Mr. Thug, and it had lots of silvery fur and teeth that would be gleaming really nicely if the 'liner hadn't gone and taken most of the light with it. Between Mr. Thug and Ray, there was a pair of tall boots. Tilting his head back, Ray looked up, up past the red jacket all the way to the head, which was wearing a wide-brimmed hat. On the face under the hat there was a small smile.

"What the," Ray said. "Who the."

for Real Worlds:
"His existence is a violation of Armistice Statute—"
"God laws."
"Yes."
It took only one long stride for Ray to get into Thatcher's space and to her credit she didn’t back down. "You're gonna quote God laws at me?" He jabbed her with a stiff finger. "Who's playin God here, huh? You wave the fucking God laws at me while you got Fraser strapped to a table somewhere so you can put his fucking brains in a blender and take what he is? Look in a fucking mirror, lady."
"For some reason I can't fathom, Mr. Kowalski, I like you, so I'm going to give you a piece of advice." Her chin came up. "You might watch your words. Unless you want to join Fraser on charges of sedition."
"What?" Vecchio was incredulous. "You're yankin me, right? Fraser’s a kitchen appliance, but he's man enough to be brought up on charges? How the Jee does that compute?"

A sequel to Real Boys:
Three years raising sheep on Clementine, and it all comes crashing down in a skip storm, some consequential psychosis, a kidnapping and a global catastrophe. He may be the universe's punching bag, but Ray will fight for freak love. He's getting Fraser back, God Laws be damned.

Reccer's Notes: There are very few AUs that put the due South characters into spaaace! This is a fusion with the Bladerunner universe where Fraser's an android looking for the killers of his AI father and partners up with Ray Kowalski, a futuristic but very recognisable CPD cop. Salieri's a marvelous writer who takes aspects of the Bladerunner universe and expands on them with extraordinary worldbuilding to tell a complex and riveting tale. There's a gradually developing relationship between Ray and Fraser, nefarious villains, and anti-android laws that wrench the boys apart so that both Rays have to fight to get Fraser back. A triumph, and a due South classic. Here's a quote from a comment by Moth: "The other day I was talking to a friend about Philip K. Dick adaptations and I said that it was funny how one of the best adaptations out there was a due South fanfic. So I went and searched for it to see if it lived up to my memories and it actually exceeded them. This is the best type of AU, one that transplants the canon characters, storylines, and themes to a new universe, while also commenting on the both the canon as well as the nature of fiction." It's also a bloody good read!

Two cast-offs in one armchair.

So here's me, Raymondo Vecchio, coming back to my life twice, and finding Kowalski there both times.

Reccer's Notes: This is a series that happened gradually over quite a few years. Back in the early 2000s Res wrote the first story Left from Ray K's POV, about him and Ray V getting together after Stella and Vecchio broke up. Pares then wrote the story Right based on that, from Ray Vecchio's POV. Then in early 2024 Res wrote Clockwise, a much longer sequel from Ray Vecchio's POV in which the Rays grapple with a number of issues, chiefly how to handle Fraser who Stella needs to return to Chicago for some time, to give evidence in a trial. It's an interesting, complex story in which they both figure out a few things, and Ray V comes to terms with issues about his father. Finally, later in 2024, Res followed it with Wrong, from Fraser's POV, when Fraser, after an unsettling phone call from the Rays, rushes down to Chicago. The fourth fic addresses the tensions of the prior stories and comes to a satisfying resolution. The resulting series is hot, angsty, and twisty, each of the characters having interesting blind spots. The Rays are very committed to each other for all their combativeness, and, in the end, they find a solution to the Fraser problem. Angst and hotness with an eventual happy ending, wonderfully written throughout, and very much recommended.

"—to everyone, which is really not smart, if you ask me," Dief concluded.

Reccer’s Notes: Dief is turned into a human by a witch on a case. He has to learn to use opposable thumbs, but arguably Fraser learns something more important…

Speranza’s works are classics in this fandom, and her grasp of the characters’ voices, innovative plots and excellent storytelling will show you why. This was recced on this comm already ten years ago for trope inversion - as unlike most animal transformation fics it’s an animal character to a human not the other way around - and it was more than ten years old then. Okay, so not everyone likes zombie AUs, but I definitely do - I know this story as I did the complementary art for it, and it's a ripping good yarn. Great characterizations, lots of plot and action, a nice slow-burn romance between Fraser and Ray despite the dire straits they're all in and a wonderful OFC in Lola, a feisty trans woman they rescue who fights alongside them. Ray Vecchio starts off in Vegas and has to try to get back to Chicago despite hordes of zombies, and Frannie's pregnant. PG, Childhood stories and adult friendship. Nothing you couldn't read to your grandmother, unless your grandmother is Martha Fraser.

Reccer's Notes: I love this story - it's poignant and incredibly well written. It tells the tales of Benton's and Rodney's not-especially-happy childhoods and how they met back then, followed by a meeting many years later in Chicago, and finally on Atlantis after she returns to Earth. The characterization is excellent and there's a satisfying ending. Benton's love of nature and his interest in birds run through it and I used bird calls as dividers between the sections of the story when I podficced it. Summary: Senior Special Agent and unbonded Sentinel John Sheppard gets called up to chase a fugitive headed for the Canadian border. Unfortunately, this means working with Corporal Rodney McKay, RCMP—a Mountie, Guide, and royal pain in the ass.
Will these two pesky individuals be able to put aside their differences and catch the escaped convict? Or will they simply annoy the living heck out of each other and do the job anyway? SSA Teyla Emmagan and SA Ronon Dex look on in amusement while tracking the fugitive and flirting with various Canadian Mounties and Border Security Officers. Because there's not much else to do on this tiny patch of hell.

Reccer's Notes: I'm calling this an SGA and due South crossover although Fraser and Ray are just alluded to and don't actually appear. It's set in the due South 'verse though, so it's AU for the Atlantis crew, also because "sentinels are known". Sheppard (FBI) crosses into Canada on the trail of a criminal, where he meets Mountie Rodney McKay and shenanigans ensue. This is a fun read with action, adventure, romance, drama and sentinel senses - who could resist!

Theme: Crossovers

Summary: (adapted from the notes) A due South/Stargate Atlantis Crossover focusing on Benton Fraser and Rodney McKay - childhood stories and adult friendship. Nothing you couldn't read to your grandmother, unless your grandmother is Martha Fraser.

Reccer's Notes: This is a wonderful crossover between two of my favourite fandoms with totally believable backstories for Ben and Rodney, from their childhoods in Canada to when they meet again, many years later, in Chicago. The writing's top notch and the characterisations are perfect. I don't mind a bit of handwaving about canon timelines to bring a good crossover together, but when a writer manages to mesh the timelines so the story slots neatly into both canons without being at all AU, it's especially satisfying. Highly recommended.

Reccer's Notes: I think my favourite thing about this is just how competent Fraser is when he turns to crime, how seamless and well-planned his heists, and how ridiculous the dance that he and Kowalski enter into is. This is such a satisfying and delightful story. (This fic was previously recommended in the amnesia and cops & crime rounds in 2010 and 2014, respectively, and also previously tagged for humor and comfortfic.)

Summary: Eighteen sex scenes strung together with angst and hockey.

Reccer's Notes: This is such a classic of the (pick several) fandom, genre, form that I never totally know what to say when introducing it to new readers, so—I guess I'll start from the basics. This is a due South AU in which Fraser and Kowalski are professional hockey players, and fourteen years later, you can find its fingerprints all over both due South fanworks and hockey RPF. It's also extensively footnoted for the new-to-hockey: I recently had occasion to introduce my partner to it to help her cement a beginner's introduction to hockey as a sport. I am not joking about this even a little bit. It helps that it's worth a read even if you care about hockey not at all: "Hawks and Hands" is also just a very long, very meaty and satisfying read, and one of those stories that you'll find yourself coming back to over and over, for the trip it takes you on down-down-down into some very dark places, and then back up again.

Reccer's Notes: A true classic of Due South fandom, this fic takes the premise of the opening episode of Season Three (Fraser returns to Chicago to discover that his partner has been replaced by a stranger whom everyone else insists is his partner while his partner has gone undercover with the mob) and runs in a very different direction. I loved the eventual consummation of Fraser and RayK's star-crossed love, of course, but the true heart of the fic lies in the community network that Fraser has built up over the years in Chicago: all the people he's helped, who are in turn eager to help him when he needs them. It's a really lovely story.

Summary:
If Blair's washing out of the guide program, who's taking care of Jim?

Reccer's Notes:
If you're wondering "how come she's reccing a Sentinel fic for a Sentinel AU category?" it's because this is one of the biggest and best known mega-crossovers in which one (or more) character from a particuar show is a Sentinel who just happens to cross paths with Jim and Blair. It's popular for a reason; the stories in this series are generally well-written, great worldbuilding on what "a world where Sentinels and Guides are known." And I think it is a more real look at what the world might be like than a lot of Sentinel AUs are. It's neither a dystopia nor a paradise, with lots of thought put into things like "what might the Occupational Safety and Health Administration regs be like for sentinels? What are the legal limits on the police use of Sentinel surveillance?" And so on and so forth. It's also a thoughtful look at the aftermath of abuse and recovery from abuse. In addition, there are a series of great cases that build into one overarching case that ties everything together. And there were so many different fandoms, there was something for everyone. I've only listed the major crossovers.

Fanwork Links:
Ahahahaha. Unfortunately, this series got posted in dribs and drabs on a variety of archives. If you, like me, prefer reading on AO3 where you can download fics to archive them easily, the first nine main-line (focusing on Jim and Blair) stories are here at AO3

Summary: While Jim and Blair are helping another department with an investigation in the woods outside Cascade, they meet up with Benton and Ray, who are also on official business. Benton is scheduled to meet a fellow Mountie and, precisely on time, Leftenant Fontaine shows up--by falling out of a plane without a parachute.

While they transport the body to the nearest Ranger station, they theorize who might have wanted him dead and why he had sacred artifacts in his possession. Jim and Blair also suspect that Benton, whose sense of taste, hearing and sight are quite acute, might be another Sentinel.

Reccer's Notes: It often seems that just about every fandom has co-opted the Sentinel/Guide trope without any canon basis. Due South already had Benton displaying several heightened senses in the show, so it makes it funny (and more logical) to speculate that he might indeed be a sentinel.

This was originally written as part of the Sentinel Slash Virtual Season, although it can be read as a standalone story. Time frame is post-series for TS and sometime after Vecchio has left with Stella and Ray K doesn't have to pretend to be Ray V for dS. Enjoy.

I re-read and re-read the story. I loved it. And finally it made me look up who those characters were and watch the series. And read more fanfiction. "Heavy Bag" was my introduction to a fandom I probably would've never joined otherwise.

I love the imagery, the emotion portrayed, and the angst which never gets too heavy, or too artificial. And of course the hot, hot sex. And the ending, which is so hopeful after the angst.

Re-reading it after I watched the show I can see how close to canon the characters are. And how strong the story still is.

Summary: Jim and Blair are in Chicago so Blair can confer with a noted anthropologist, Dr. Barstowe. Jim wanders around the museum while waiting for Blair to finish, only to overhear an altercation involving Blair. As he and Benton Fraser, who is also at the museum, rush over to investigate, they learn that Dr. Barstowe's  former student has stolen valuable artifacts that he plans to use in a ritual during the upcoming eclipse. Blair insists they investigate, so they stop by the Chicago PD to pick up Ray, who is the only person with the authority to do so.

Reccer's Notes: I like this because it captures the quirkiness and patter of dS (including a stop at Ray's mom's house) as well as the banter between Jim and Blair. It was posted in 1997 while TS was still airing; Blair is younger here and the dissertation hasn't become a sore point yet. This has the distinction of being the first crossover posted at the old 852 archive.

Reccer's Notes:The most remarkable thing about this brilliant and engaging fic is the variety of tones it manages to hit. The first few paragraphs look like it might be crack!fic (the title, "Makeup," initially refers to the potentially crackesque scenario of Frannie being forced to use her makeup on Ray and then Ray being forced to put on Frannie's undergarments). From there it goes to blazing hotness with the threesome sex...and that scene is both fraught with angst and tinged with love. Reccer's Notes: When I think of Lamardeuse, I think of long, luxurious stories. But she writes short, luxurious stories as well. Everything I’ve read of hers is a good read.

Favorite Fanworks: Equilibrium (The Sentinel) This is a long (83K words), plotty story that starts with Blair having trouble at the Academy and Jim starting to question his sexual identity with the help of a shrink. Then, Jim is assigned to a case that might be a hate crime just as homophobia rears its ugly head at the PD and directed at the guys. This has plenty of everything: angst, romance, hurt/comfort and getting at those unresolved issues that stand in the way of a happy ending.

Catch (The Sentinel) Post-series Jim and Blair take a fishing vacation to Nova Scotia.

Podfic of “Slow Dance” (The Sentinel) Lamardeuse reads her own story here and it’s short and loving. Blair’s yearning for a little romance. The story can be found at AO3.

Snape must find the answers, then teach Harry how. In the next thirty minutes. Like it would ever happen.

A Hundred Happy Things.  Harlequin AU (no Stargate). Kaleb's long gone, Jeannie's got a career, Madison has problems, Rodney's got Inner Power!, and Sheppard. . . is pretty much the same.

The Number of a Man.  Rodney McKay will leave no man behind—especially when there's a simple solution involving nanites, alien technology, and Legos.  One of the more heart-breaking kidfics I've read, (but with a happy ending).  Also, great use of Ancient technology.

The Boy who Fell.  Boxing teaches Dudley discipline and how to work hard for what he wants. Or who he wants.  A great Dudley Redeemed story.

Here, where the world is quiet.  After the war, Severus became head of the Scrimgeour Lycanthrope Academy. His mandate was simple: Provide them with Wolfsbane and daily occupation. Teach them as you see fit. Report any violent outbursts. Keep them away from regular people.

Reccer's Notes: Elaine has been a strong presence in The Sentinel fandom for years. She set up the Artifact Storage Room 3 archive five years ago when 852 Prospect started waning. It has more than fifty authors who’ve published over 1200 stories and is still welcome to all TS fans and writers. Elaine writes intelligent prose that run the gamut: AUs (futuristic, historical, fantasy, different meeting), PWPs, humor, crack, and also darker and weirder stuff. She’s so good, however, that she makes it all believable.

Favorite Fanworks: Covert Response Unit (The Sentinel) Blair is abducted by a shadowy government agency. Sound familiar? Except that in this complete AU, the agency has the best of intentions when they bring Blair to his holy grail, who heads the covert group. You gotta love a story that has the tag “Jim is kind of a bastard”. He is… and he isn’t.

Eye of the Serpent(The Sentinel & Stargate SG-1) Jim and Blair are on holiday in Chicago. While visiting Field Museum they run into Jack O’Neill and Daniel Jackson. Jim and Jack know each other from their military days and are happy to be reunited. But not as happy as Daniel and Blair, who are old lovers, which becomes obvious early on. But Jack and Daniel aren’t tourists; they’ve come to Chicago because there might be a Ga’ould artifact at the museum. And that lands both Blair and Jim right in the middle of a mess.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Burns(The Sentinel) Blair in a kilt; what more can I say?

Oh, and the icon I'm using?  It's Elaine's. :)
