Summary: Gerard is twenty-two, drunk, lonely, and really, really needs to get out of the basement.

Reccer's Notes: This is a thoroughly fascinating AU on the canonical origins of My Chemical Romance. Gerard yearns for a life outside his routine of work - basement - occasional evening at a club. Directionless and lonely, he drinks to escape everything while Mikeyway and Elena try to keep him from falling apart.

In walks 19-year old Frank, charming and uncomplicated, ready to push against Gerard's walls. Though he's the more level-headed out of the two, Frank does make mistakes even as he pursues Gerard.

The fic works on two levels: as a narrative on the year before MCR was formed as well as Gerard's realization that he does have the power to make his life mean something. Pairing-wise, I like how

brooklinegirl shows us that both Frank and Gerard have their good as well as wonky/bad sides, that the misunderstandings aren't handwaved just to give the readers a happy ending (a less-talented writer would've made things easy as soon as Frank and Gerard had their big fight). The ending is pitch-perfect because it has Gerard acknowledging the potential in believing in himself. It's a happily ever after that doesn't ignore the bad parts. Finally, the sex is messy and hot and full of FEELINGS.
