Our second enterprise workshop looks at business planning and why it’s important. We’ll breakdown the core components of a business plan into manageable chunks and will introduce you to a range of techniques that will help you map your ideas and projects into viable creative enterprises.

During this workshop, there’ll also be the chance to hear from two inspiring creative practitioners who will give a frank accounts of their business planning activities – both good and bad! One of the speakers has also just secured funding from a high street bank to open a new shop in Brighton, thanks to her recently written business plan!

George Hardie Illustrator and Collector

Professor George Hardie teaches on the postgraduate Illustration course at the University of Brighton as well as teaching internationally. He is an avid collector of objects which take his eye. As he has said, they choose him rather than he them. This has led him to make collections of any object which can easily take the form of a tree and objects that take the form of hands. This interest impacts on his work and can clearly be seen on some of the images you can find on the following links.

Erwin Wurm

Erwin Wurm is an Austrian artist who produces , amongst other things, one minute sculptures. The results are not only short and fast but humorous, odd, surreal with a note about the sometimes discordant relationship which people have with their surroundings.

The Towner - Eastbourne

Six Eastbourne artists have been invited to exhibit their creative response to the permanent exhibition at the Towner in Eastbourne.

The exhibition takes it's cue from Marcel Proust's words, 'The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.'

Captain Pugwash at the Stormont Studios in Rye - A Retrospective

19 November until mid February 2012

'John Ryan, the author, illustrator and animator, who died on July 22 2009,in his home town of Rye aged 88, created Captain Pugwash, who became much loved on children’s television in the 1970s; he also devised The Adventures of Sir Prancelot and Mary, Mungo and Midge. Launched by Ryan in the first issue of Eagle comic in 1950, Captain Horatio Pugwash soon became a children’s favourite and an eight-year stint as a comic strip in Radio Times followed. In 1957 Pugwash and his crew aboard the Black Pig — Tom the cabin boy, Willy, Barnabas and Pugwash’s deadly enemy Cut-Throat Jake — made their debut in Ryan’s long-running series for BBC Television. During his long career, he created many other characters and produced a large body of work including numerous books and artworks. This exhibition celebrates his life and work through his art.'

David Foldvari on inspiration and illustration

Hi everyone.


One of my tutors - David Foldvari - has written a piece of advice for illustration students. I thought I would share it with you and get you thinking about what influences play part in your illustrations:

'If you study graphics or illustration, my most serious piece of advice to you would be to stop looking at my stuff for inspiration as soon as possible. if you want to be genuinely inspired or influenced by what i do, then look outside the tiny and insignificant bubble that is contemporary illustration. watch films, read books, look at other forms of art and design, learn about what's going on around you - anything that takes you outside illustration. despite of what your tutors may tell you, as an illustration student, referencing and studying other contemporary illustrators' work is not only going to damage your own work, but it will only help to homogenise and water down illustration as a whole. there is a big problem with illustration students at the moment - they are spending too much time referencing and copying other illustrators' work, and this will end their career before it has a chance to start. i'm only stating the obvious here, but as a student, you should do everything to make sure your work looks nothing like anybody else's out there, otherwise it will never be noticed, and you might as well get a job in mcdonalds.
i and most other working illustrators i know generally go and see a lot of degree shows, and anyone referencing other contemporary illustrators tends to be seen as ignorant and a bit second rate and crap - nobody wants to see the same old, but we all love seeing things we've never seen before, it's what moves this industry forward. as a new graduate, it's your job to move things forward, and by referencing other illustrators, you are doing the opposite.

so if you're using me as your contextual reference (or whatever), then do the following:
- stop looking at my work for inspiration, it is based on my own background and cultural references, and therefore no use to anyone but me
- look instead at your own cultural and personal background for inspiration, it's what i do
- look at 20th century graphic design and see how much of it you really understand. (i wish i had studied that stuff more at college)
- look at every piece of work you've done over the last year - how much of this work do you feel represents you as a truly unique individual, and how much of it is 100% different from what everyone else is doing? unless the answer is 'all of it', it's time to re-think everything. (i'm not saying i'm exempt from this rule, i have to remind myself to do this a lot).'

Varoom - Call for Submissions

Varoom – the illustration report, covering illustration, culture and society, invites scholarly submissions for consideration for Varoom and VaroomLab online. Submissions will be subject to peer review.

VaroomLab was established to provide a platform for exchange and discussion of ideas around the broad subject of illustration. Varoom is a unique publication in the UK existing as a vehicle for dissemination of some of this research. VaroomLab on line provides a wide forum to challenge and potentially expand research and hence provide maximum possible impact.

Varoom 16 – all Change - issue out now

The Modern Mind

The University of Brighton is pleased to offer you the chance to have your creative writing published in a collaborative anthology alongside the work of other students and staff from the universities of Brighton, Sussex and Chichester.

From the successful entries, a team of independent judges will choose the top three pieces, with prizes of £100 for first place, and two runner up prizes of £50.

The theme for this year’s anthology is:

THE MODERN MIND

This is a highly interpretive concept, and we are excited to read the variation in understanding that this theme will produce- so be creative!

Submissions must be no longer than 2,000 words, and poetry not longer than 40 lines. All forms of creative writing are accepted.

The deadline for entries is the 14th of February 2012.

Timelines: A film about the life, work and opinions of Roland Jarvis

Roland is special. He started out as an engineer but after fifteen years became an artist. He paints, prints, makes assemblages and films. He even makes clocks! His studio in the Old Town is a place of wonders.

A film has been made about Roland and his work and will be showing at the Electric Palace Cinema in the High Street, Old Town, on 30th November. This is a must for all of you. It really will be that special.

Colourful remembrances of lost birds

The Dodo, Pallas's Cormorant and Great Auk may be extinct bird species - but they, and dozens more winged creatures no longer with us, have been brought back to life for a new exhibition in London that aims to raise awareness of the need for bird conservation.

Ghosts of Gone Birds features the work of more than 80 artists - including Sir Peter Blake, Ralph Steadman, and Billy Childish - who were asked to celebrate the lives of birds lost, or very nearly lost, to extinction. Take a look at some of the creations with the curator Ceri Levy.

The Hermione Hammond Drawing Bursary has been recently established to award £4000 (four thousand pounds) to a final year UK art student, graduating in 2012, who produces a outstanding representational drawing [without colour].

The award is open to graduating students from art colleges in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Each participating college is asked to select a drawing by two graduating students.

In order to facilitate this we are asking each course within the Faculty (where appropriate) to consider selecting one or two students for this prize. A panel of faculty members will make a final selection of two students to put forward to the Hermione Hammond judging panel.

Each entry should be sent to D.Bullen@brighton.ac.uk as a jpeg – with the artist’s name and age; also the medium [pencil, charcoal, conté crayon etc] size, title and date of the drawing by 5pm Monday 16th January 2012.

Serge Seidlitz

'Illustrator Serge Seidlitz' first London solo show is now open at the Coningsby gallery. The exhibition includes original drawings, screenprints, zines, T-shirts and also a number of hand-woven Nepalese rugs sporting Seidlitz's work...

In recent years Seidlitz (represented by Debut Art) has worked for clients including Tango, Aol, Virgin, ITV, Barclays, BBC, Channel 4, SHell, Oxfam and Vodaphone, to name but a few, and his invariably bright and bold work encompasses maps, character design, hand drawn type, and information graphics. Edward Burra

Edward Burra lived in Rye and happens to be a very interesting surrealist painter; very odd and a great colourist. He was afflicted with polio and couldn't paint on a large scale but instead painted on pieces of paper taped together on completion.

Len Shelley and Angie Biltcliffe: A Retrospective

Len Shelley and Angie Biltcliffe were hugely popular and influential figures within Hastings and the wider art world. Both worked closely with Hastings Museum and Art Gallery over the years, as exhibitors, guest curators and workshop leaders. We are delighted to be able to take this opportunity to celebrate their work, reflecting the profound impact their lives, and untimely deaths have had, with an exhibition of interest to those who knew them well and to those new to their work.

The show is on until 23rd October.

Made in Hastings

If you haven't been already (and even if you have) you must visit Made in Hastings, a small but perfectly formed shop on the High Street in the Old Town. It is run by a group of creative people who are collectively working together to create a venue to sell their work. They also sell the work of others. Indeed they are currently selling the tea towel designed by Hannah Cousins who completed the FdA Illustration course last year and who is now at Camberwell School of Art following their top-up BA.

Selling work oils the process of making it in the first place. There are a range of ways this can be done and Made in Hastings sets an inspiring example.

Andy Warhol at the De La Warr Pavillion Bexhill

The De La Warr Pavillion is hosting an exhibition of the work of Andy Warhol. In particular they are showing the famous Marilyn Diptych which was made at a critical point when Warhol was moving from being a commercial artist into working as a fine artist. In addition the exhibition will include prints of the Campbell's soup cans. However, as well as these famous works there will be more unusual work from Warhol.

Volunteers

Radiator Arts are organising three workshops as part of the Battle Arts Trail. One will be in Claverham Community College ( 11-16yrs) on the 6th, 7th and 8th July and, on the same days, there will be workshops at Battle and Langton School Primary School. There will be a third workshop at Netherfield Primary School early in September.

They will be able to use some help in assisting students realising the artworks which will form part of the trial whether birds made from books or illuminated withy structures which will be placed along the High Street.

This is a really good opportunity to see some community arts projects in action, work alongside artists and generally participate in this ambitious event.

Creative Quarterly Illustration Competition

Entering competitions can be a very useful way to promote your work and gain creditability. There are plenty around and you could start researching them now just to find the one you're most interested in entering. All of this can be part of your work experience.

The Media Enterprise Centre, in conjunction with the Electric Palace Cinema and St. Leonards Film Society, re-launched ‘Projection Space’ in July 2010.

The popular user content/bring-your-film night will once again be hosted by the Electric Palace Cinema. If you are a moving image maker of any kind, we invite you to attend and screen extracts of your shorts, documentaries and installations. Projection Space represents a great opportunity to have your work screened and gauge the audience’s response to your work, obtain constructive feedback and meet potential collaborators.

This event is open to all, not just those with films to show.

Any work to be screened must be submitted to the Media Enterprise Centre no later than 5pm on Wednesday 18^th May, to allow us time to produce the running order for the event. Please contact k.bullen@brighton.ac.uk / 01424 428590 for more information. Extracts will be kept to a time limit dependent on the amount of clips scheduled. People screening work should be ready to answer questions from the audience in an informal and relaxed setting.

Whether you’re screening work or simply interested to see the work of others, please come and get involved and feel free to pass this invitation on. We look forward to your submissions and seeing you on the night.

It's Nice That

This website has been recommended by Hannah Rollings. It celebrates creativity by publishing some exciting work including 'student of the month', recommended books and recommended links. First hand research is the best BUT looking at the work of others and being informed by contemporary practice runs a very very close second.

'Cuts' exhibition invitation

Hi everyone!

I am writing on the blog to invite you to an exhibition set up by myself and 15 other illustration students from Westminster uni. It is to be held in Space 54 in Shoreditch, London from the 25th of March to the 30th from 12:00 to 18:00. It is about the government spending cuts and the private view is open for everyone on March 24th from 18:00 to 21:00 free drinks to be provided.

Joe Sacco

If you like graphic novels, as do I, then you really should check out the work of Joe Sacco. His approach to journalism is truly inspiring. In fact, the man's a genius!

Marion Deuchars

Marion Deuchars creates a texture with type, changing from upper case to lower case, from outlines to solid. In all of this she scatters illustrations. The words are in a hierarchy of importance; some words you pick out before others. This is a great way to get your audience to read in an order you establish.

Rob Ryan

Rob Ryan's work is so fashionable that he has many trying to emulate his style. Is this sad or a compliment? Using scissors and paper he achieves a particular quality to his line. His pieces are unashamedly decorative, charming and evocative. He has his own blog where you can see the various applications he has found for his work. He has his own etsy site but also sells his work on a mass scale at shops like John Lewis.

Jonny Hannah

Jonny Hannah is another successful illustrator who is noted for his great lettering. Like Andy he uses screenprinting a lot but also I suspect just straight drawing and photoshop. His approach acheives an almost 50's quality in that printing at this time involved colour separation whereby each colour was printed individually one at a time. One colour could therefore be seen through another.

Jonny has a passion for Jazz and has produced a wonderful illustrated boofk on the subject. He's also written and illustrated a story about 'Rocket Man" based on his son's toy. Believe it or not he works in a shed in his back garden on the south coast.

Andy Smith

Andy Smith is based in Hastings. Whilst he comes into college to use the printmaking facilities to make screenprints and books which he sells on his website he generally uses photoshop to fulfill illustration commissions. They have a strong printed quality which is conveyed through a broken printed texture and dramatic compositions. He's particularly good at taking small scale, almost doodles and then enlarging these; he does this in a way which maintains their freshness and life. He's in big demand for his lettering.

You've probably seen his work around. He frequently works for the Guardian.

Peep Show

Peepshow was organised in 2000 by a group of graduating students from the University of Brighton as a way of promoting their work and working collaboratively on joint projects. They've done some exciting work in more traditional areas of illustration but have also produced some very accomplished mixed media work.

Slinkachu

Slinkachu is a London based artist who makes tiny naturalistic sculptures which form the basis of his street art. He's something of a miniaturist and it is this together with its naturalism and strange content which makes his work so effective.

In his own words:, 'my 'Little People Project' started in 2006. It involves the remodelling and painting of miniature model train set characters, which I then place and leave on the street. It is both a street art installation project and a photography project. The street-based side of my work plays with the notion of surprise and I aim to encourage city-dwellers to be more aware of their surroundings. The scenes I set up, more evident through the photography, and the titles I give these scenes aim to reflect the loneliness and melancholy of living in a big city, almost being lost and overwhelmed. But underneath this, there is always some humour. I want people to be able to empathise with the tiny people in my works'.

Ben Wilson and his Chewing Gum Art

Ben Wilson suffers real physical hardship working in all weathers and working on hard pavements to create his chewing gum art. Why didn't anyone think of this before? It isn't criminal, locations are in infinite supply and there's something intriguing about creating something curious and eye catching in such seemingly unpromising places.

This is a brilliant site created by Moose who was responsible for the Hastings Moth Project. It not only showcases his work but also gives a sense of someone working outside normal conventions and contexts to then being used even by the police force to get its messages across. Throughout he offers interesting ways in which artwork can be embedded within the urban environment.
