Not that I ever had any use for mainstream Democrats in Congress, but I can't believe they can't figure out the obvious step of adopting Mitch McConnell's tactics for first preventing your opposition party from doing anything and then mocking them as do-nothings. Politics is and has always been transactional--Congresscritters only vote for a bill after they've been assured there's something in it for them.
Even in the fantastically unlikely chance of Trump producing a nominee who isn't a walking human rights violation, the Democrats should agree that they will NEVER vote for a Trump nominee unless they get something of the deal. There is nothing they can do to make Trump like them, and giving in doesn't make them look loyal, it makes them look weak.
There's nothing new about faux naivete in politicians' public personas, but the aw-shucks act is especially grating when they complain about ending up in The Squid Game when they thought they signed up for Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.

Date: 2025-02-05 12:56 pm (UTC)This does lead to a lot of posturing where legislators introduce bills they know can't be passed, so they can claim they tried to get Good Things and Free Puppies for their constituents but the Bad Guys blocked them.
