Our team just published the results of advance brain image studies in three neurodevelopmental encephalopathies. We show the presence of shared and disease-specific brain alterations in SYNGAP1, GRINpathies, and STXBP1 disorders. Brain volumetry shows promise as a structural phenotyping tool to study disorders of #neurodevelopment Main highlights: •Brain imaging reveals hypothesis-generating patterns of structural deficit in glutamatergic synaptopathies. •Cerebellum and limbic regions show consistent volume loss across disorders compared to aged-matched templates. •Ventricular enlargement relates to greater cognitive, language and motor impairment. The latest JIMD Podcast touches on a notion that has moved beyond healthcare into the mainstream wellness and longevity sectors - whether more data/knowledge is always better? Screening programmes are expanding and the technology involved in screening, at least in the pilots, is changing but this is also changing the language of screening. Traditionally screening has always required a disorder to present an early risk, to have a known natural history and to come with a treatment that could change that. More recently there is talk of finding diagnoses to shorten diagnostic odysseys or to find patients who might join trials. However, as Nina, Jess and Mirjam discuss, a positive newborn screen may bring uncertainty rather than clarity and information that can inform lifestyle choices does not always lead to change. Newborn screening is changing, but it's important to consider what voices drive that change, what we do with the data... and where we store it!
