Extent of the article
[edit]As this deals with the Lakeland Revival is it necessary for it to continue on into the facts of Bentley's life after Lakeland. Shouldn't we just say that he left and give the reasons he left for ( the adultery and everything) and leave it at that? Ltwin (talk) 21:25, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
- Agreed, the second and third paragraphs of the section "Bentley's departure" are not germane here, but would be to his bio. Reliable source coverage of the Revival post Bentley would be germane here, but not to his bio. A quick search doesn't show me anything in that category, unfortunately. The revival ended sometime after Bentley's departure. The date is mentioned at the beginning of the article. Attendence had been declining since sometime before Bentley left. Ltwin (talk) 22:59, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
- I think there should be copyediting done; both the lead and the body make it sound as if it ended when Todd left. I know there isn't much data but the lead should not say "The revival ended with Bentley being accused of ..." when that was two months before the revival ended. That sentence is just false. I don't know what we can do with the body though; are there more post Bentley sources than the one cited in the lead? GRBerry 15:30, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not sure I'd have to look, but I probably wont have time untill the week end. When I look at the Charisma magazine article, it alone could be used to rewrite the intro. It does suggest that the scandal had something to do with the revival ending, but it didn't immediately happen. Todd Bentley and Fresh Fire had already announced they were leaving Lakeland to take the revival to other cities. There was already a date set to hand it over to Ignited Church. Even before Bentley left, attendance had already started noticeably to decline. When news of the scandal broke it just hastened the decline. And one could argue that even if there wasn't any scandal, attendance would have still declined without Bentley there, as he was the leader and focal point. Of course for any revival God is said to be the focus, but people didn't come for Strader or anyone else. It was Bentley's preaching and healing that was driving this. So while the scandal should be mentioned as a something that hastened the end, the reason is more for burn out. The revival just ended; however, the source also says that Ignited Church is using the momentum from the revival to create some kind of apostolic center and revival alliance. This should be mentioned as an outcome of the revival. Ltwin (talk) 16:30, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
I've changed it in the introduction and am reading through the article to see any other places of concern. I've found these passages in the "Finance" section and believe that they either need to be removed or tweaked:
- "Bentley said that he would open the books for independent auditors.[2] However, requests for financial disclosure from World Magazine were met with a comment that Bentley was "too busy keeping up with what God is doing"[4] to provide financial information."
- "During the revival, Bentley's spokesperson said that Bentley continued "to draw his standard salary, set by his board, from his office in Canada. It is a modest salary and is in the five-figure range," and that Fresh Fire Ministries is audited annually.[2] A newspaper in Vancouver reported that Bentley owned a home in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada, a 2007 GMC Sierra, and a 2003 Harley-Davidson motorcycle.[19]"
Ltwin (talk) 16:22, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
I've also completely reworked the last section. I've renamed it "Decline and impact" and have made it less about Bentley and more about the revival. It's not complete and needs to be expanded, but it shouldn't go back to the way it was before, which was essentially repeating what was already written at Todd Bentley.
