Description

Water carrier for Mesopotamia. The first tank was built in Lincoln by William Foster & co. To keep it secret it was known during its development as 'Water Carrier for Mesopotamia'. This became shortened by the workforce to 'water tank' and eventually it was shortened again to 'tank' and the word entered the English language.

This is one of the first designs which went into production and was in active service on the battlefields of France. The photo was taken at the Museum of Lincolnshire Life, Lincoln on the weekend of the 90th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

This example is a Mk IV Female tank Flirt II and is known to have fought at the Battle of Cambrai in 1917.
