Nora Aunor

Nora Aunor is the screen name of Nora Cabaltera Villamayor (born May 21, 1953 in Iriga, Camarines Sur), an award-winning actress from the Philippines.

Aunor has appeared in more than 170 films, reaped numerous acting awards, and recorded more than two dozen albums, including scores of hit singles. On screen, she has starred with the leading men of her time, including Joseph Estrada, who later became the country’s president.

Known in the Philippines as a superstar, "Ate Guy" acquired a following of fans known as Noranians, whose devotion to their idol was only matched by the fans of her contemporary "star for all seasons" Vilma Santos (known as Vilmanians). Although the rivalry between Noranians and Vilmanians remained mostly friendly, there have been times when clashes occurred in the streets of Manila.

Aunor, however, carries the distinction for hosting the longest-running musical variety show in Philippine television. Her show "Superstar" ran for almost two decades. Other Filipino actresses such as Sharon Cuneta, Vilma Santos, Marical Soriano and Snooky Serna attempted to host their own variety shows, but Aunor's show was more enduring.

Although she retains her Philippine citizenship, Aunor has spent much of her time in recent years in California, where she has a home.

Aunor was arrested March 30, 2005 when airport screeners at Los Angeles International Airport stopped her on her way to Oakland and allegedly found 7.7 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride (known in the Philippines as shabu} in her carry-on bag, and a glass pipe wrapped in a T-shirt. The day following her arrest, Aunor was released after posting a $10,000 bail. At the reading of the charge against her on April 21, she pleaded not guilty. The trial has been set for December 16, 2005.
