Route description

U.S. Route 20 (US 20) in Indiana is a main east-west highway that is parallel to the Indiana Toll Road. US 20 is mainly two lanes east of Elkhart. At Elkhart County Road 17 US 20 becomes a bypass around Elkhart and South Bend. After exiting the bypass. The road becames two lanes again. Until LaPorte County where US 20 becomes a four lane divded highway. After I-94 US 20 is again two lanes then though Gary, East Chicago, and Whiting, Indiana US 20 varies between one way streets, two lane streets, four lane streets, and same part with US 12 are even more lanes.

History

Until the 90's US 20 went down town Elkhart and South Bend. When the State of Indiana build Bypass 20, New US 20, or theSt. Joseph Valley Parkway. The route Downtown was decommissioned.
