Due to the large variety of codes of football played in Australia, conflicts sometimes arise when naming them in articles. The following is a guideline for use of the word "football" in Australian articles.

Special cases

  1. are token representative sides which do not play in international competition – All-Australian team
  2. do not refer to themselves or major international competitions as "football" teams – Australia national rugby union team (see category) and Australia national rugby league team (see category)
  3. are minor codes and do not warrant primary disambiguation as per regular Wikipedia policy – Australia national American football team and Australia international rules football team
