The Foundation was founded at the conclusion of Rick Hansen's Man in Motion World Tour, and was originally known as the Rick Hansen Man in Motion Legacy Fund at its establishment in 1988. It acquired charity status in 1989 and was renamed to Rick Hansen Man in Motion Foundation in 1992. It adopted its current name in 2009.
