You've got to be kidding me. I've been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like. It's just common sense.

Weber State criminal justice course
editHi Jesse V. I'm incorporating a semester-long Wikipedia assignment into my policing course at Weber State. Would you be willing to be the Wikipedia ambassador for our course? The assignment will closely follow the Wikimedia Foundation's suggested syllabus with the exception that I'll give them a list of pages they can choose from. I thought it would be nice to have someone localish to help me and my students. I'm computer savvy and have done some HTML coding, but I'm new to editing/writing on Wikipedia. If you could help, that would be great! Profmwilliams (talk) 20:30, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
July 2012 Study of authors of health-related Wikipedia pages
editDear Author/Jesse V.
My name is Nuša Farič and I am a Health Psychology MSc student at the University College London (UCL). I am currently running a quantitative study entitled Who edits health-related Wikipedia pages and Why? I am interested in the editorial experience of people who edit health-related Wikipedia pages. I am interested to learn more about the authors of health-related pages on Wikipedia and what motivations they have for doing so. I am currently contacting the authors of randomly selected articles and I noticed that someone at this address recently edited an article on Metabolism. I would like to ask you a few questions about you and your experience of editing the above mentioned article and or other health-related articles. If you would like more information about the project, please visit my user page (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Hydra_Rain) and if interested, please reply via my talk page or e-mail me on nusa.faric.11@ucl.ac.uk. Also, others interested in the study may contact me! If I do not hear back from you I will not contact this account again. Thank you very much in advance. Hydra Rain (talk) 19:32, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
- Email sent, since I've worked on Folding@home, but I was using AWB to edit metabolism. Jesse V. (talk) 16:26, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

In reerence to article: Marta Cuervo
editDear Jesse V. Since your last commentary about Marta Cuervo's page, the artice has been edited to include outside links as well as links to outside articles related to its subject. It has also been edited to comply with Wikipedia standards. Would you think is possible to remove your tag? I appreciate your response about this matter. Respectfully, ernesto53. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ernesto53 (talk • contribs) 15:54, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you for your efforts. I have removed the Dead End tag because it's no longer accurate, as well as the Orphan tag because there are incoming links. However, its always a good idea to add more incoming links where appropriate. I left the Wikify tag because there is still further cleanup and organization left to be done. Consider checking out high-quality articles and observing their formatting, and then adapt the Marta Cuervo article to match. Wikipedia's guides and polices should also be helpful. I'd be happy to reexamine the article whenever you feel that the issues have been addressed. Good luck! • Jesse V.(talk) 17:04, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

editHi, thank you for volunteering to help me and my students out as we venture to edit articles as part of our course project. We are newbies, so may have lots of questions. Students are scheduled to post an outline of planned changes on article talk pages by 10/9/12, and changes are to appear in articles by 10/16/12. We would appreciate your feedback. Thanks! - Thanks. Could you also remove the Wikify tag from AWB so that users don't accidentally add it into an article? There are a variety of tags that AWB could insert in its place. I thought there was a feature request open for that or something. • Jesse V.(talk) 14:55, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

I like your kitty.
editI like the kitty! You told me to work on syntax and stuff, so I tried to do it at Meandrusa (did I link to it right?) It took a while and there was an edit conflict in the middle, but could you take a look please? Mapalazoo (talk) 23:24, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
- About the kitty: look at WP:TPS. Also, I really love cats. (I'm thinking about cats again...) Edit conflicts have a tendency to happen, especially on high-traffic sites. If two editors change two different sections of the article an edit conflict won't happen. There's a whole group of Wikipedians who call themselves New Page Patrollers, and they basically look through all the new articles to see if they are good enough for Wikipedia (not every article is, see WP:Notability). That's why the edit conflict happened: articles get a fair bit of traffic on their first few days. There's plenty that you can do to expand and improve the article. The tags should help, but please let me know if you have any questions. • Jesse V.(talk) 23:53, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Rather than edit war
editThe top of the FAC page says "... reviewers may transfer lengthy, resolved commentary to the FAC archive talk page, leaving a link in a note on the FAC archive.", which is exactly what I did. I'd appreciate it if you revert your revert — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:25, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry, I forgot about that. I put your comments back. • Jesse V.(talk) 05:44, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. I was actually worried the wall of text was hurting your chances (and worried about the sheer weight of the main FAC page); the article looks in fairly good shape, but I'm sure a few extra reviewers couldn't hurt.
- As an aside, I generally put my resolved comments on the talk page; it's not universally approved, but it's an acceptable alternative to walls of TL;DR — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:47, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
- To the contrary, I'm pretty sure that the "wall of text" actually improves the chances of success. It's not a vote, and I'm sure the FA director and his delegates appreciate the fact that the reviewers did such a thorough job. It shows that's its more than a "Support, looks good to me. ~~~~". I'm actually happy that there's such a large amount of feedback, it has greatly improved the article more than four short responses ever could. I've resolved most all of Emw's comments, and I've still got a few from Ed that I need to finish off. I'm mainly waiting for his reply. Feel free to support if you want. • Jesse V.(talk) 06:06, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
Adding breaks to the F@H review
editHello Jesse. I notice that Wikipedia:FAC#Mitt Romney now contains some arbitrary breaks (such as ====Break 1====). These breaks can be helpful when the review has become very large, since they allow sections of the review to be edited. How would you feel about allowing such breaks in the Folding@home review? Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 17:58, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
- Up until now I had assumed that they weren't allowed or something. One could section the page off, one for each reviewer. However, it may be too late to do this, since the nomination seems to be closing down now that Emw gave his support. Due to this, I'm indifferent either way, but I'll keep it in mind for the next lengthy FAC page I run across. • Jesse V.(talk) 18:05, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
- Actually, after further thought, it would have been nice to do this earlier but it's too late now, so I'd rather not. Thanks for the suggestion though. • Jesse V.(talk) 18:48, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

editI've left the author a note which says "You need to read WP:RS - your references don't look to me to be independent reliable sources. They appear connected to the subject too closely." I've not deleted, but I've left the tag on. I'm willing to undelete later if really good RS references are found. Peridon (talk) 12:41, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
- I noticed. I suspected that the references would be weak, but that's all I could find at the moment. I don't know much about the company itself, so it's really up to him to find those references wherever they are. Thank you for your help. • Jesse V.(talk) 14:16, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

editHi Jesse, just wanted to drop you a note to alleviate your concern about F@H being on the main page tomorrow. I declined your protection request since pages are rarely preemptively protected, generally it's best to live up to the "anyone can edit" mantra. I see from your userpage that the F@H page is pretty special to you, but rest assured it will be fine. Vandalism on the featured article isn't as overwhelming as you might expect, and generally it's reverted within minutes (if not seconds); on the flip side, often being on the main page serves as a peer review of sorts since it's open to a wider audience, you might see a tiny tweak here or there coming from an IP editor. In any case, your article will be fine. Cool subject btw, I used to fold too! was on the Overclock.net team. =) Cheers, · Andonic contact 08:12, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- Ah, thanks for the note. I thought there was a small chance that it could be semi-protected. Thanks for the reassurance. And what do you mean "I used to fold". Why aren't you still folding? Their new software, V7, makes running F@h pretty simple. • Jesse V.(talk) 14:16, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- Well I mostly just use a netbook now, so don't really have too much to contribute and would rather avoid the overheating anyway. · Andonic contact 18:15, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- Well I'm always of the opinion to try to contribute with what you have, but that's a situation where passing on participation makes sense. But at least you can read the article. :) • Jesse V.(talk) 18:44, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

- I'm glad you were able to get it there, I know you've put a lot of work into it. Is there any documentation that can show if Folding@home usage increases after this? Ryan Vesey 17:48, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks to you both! Yes it took a lot of time and effort, it was sort of a self-taught crash-course in molecular and computational biology. Yes, the source for those Participation and Performance graphs might be one. But users have to download the software, complete a WU, and upload it for it to count. Thus I'll have to wait a few days to see for sure. Plus people may not install the software right away, etc. At the very least it's education. :) • Jesse V.(talk) 19:27, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

If you are curious about the current server-side state of Folding@Home on the PS3, I was able today to upload a work unit from my PS3 to the server and download a new work unit. To make this possible, it was necessary to disconnect my router from the Internet so that the client would time out on the software update check (to avoid the update from Sony that disables the client), then reconnect my router once the protein folding simulation was running. The PS3 reconnected while the F@H client continued to run. According to Stanford's F@H server status page, the PS3 assignment server is still running, and two of the four PS3 work unit servers continue to accept connections. For the time being, then, PS3s which manage to avoid the client update can still contribute to F@H. - Ilednuredgas (talk) 22:18, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the information. Please keep me updated on how things go. I'm assuming is in reply to me question on foldingforum.org. • Jesse V.(talk) 22:32, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, the new work unit I downloaded, as described above, was never uploaded. All attempts by my PS3 client to connect to the FAH servers since that day have been unsuccessful. The server status page continues to show the PS3 assignment server still running fine, plus one of the PS3 work unit servers, and you can talk to their port 80s just fine (both servers use that port for FAH duties), but at last check 2 nights ago, my PS3 client still gets no response from the servers. I'm not sure what to make of this situation. If the PS3 portion of FAH is indeed now formally shut down, then why leave the servers in a semi-active state? The work unit server even reports work units available to distribute. The server status page, while not updated in real time, is nonetheless very current. Is it just a bug in the reporting? I am rather disappointed. Ilednuredgas (talk) 00:12, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
- How interesting. I would have thought they would leave the collection servers up. I don't know what's happening there. In any case, Life with PlayStation and all of its services are officially retired, which includes Folding@home. Article Feedback Tool update
editHey Jesse V.. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.
We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.
Again, we're very sorry about this issue; hopefully it'll be smooth sailing after this :). If you have any questions, just drop them at the talkpage. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) 21:46, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
Would you like to OA for a Molecular Biology course project?
editHi,
I and User:Keilana are OAs for this course project. Another professor, teaching another section of the same course, has just decided that she would also like to run this Wikipedia project also. This is very last minute -- the course officially starts tomorrow. But as you can see, the course page is already thoroughly documented and very detailed, and so the role you would play would be as a mentor and guide for editing, and as a reviewer for articles as they are written.
Would you be able to help with this? If so, could you please let us know as soon as possible? I will be setting up the new section's course page this evening. Thanks! Klortho (talk) 20:15, 3 September 2013 (UTC)
- Hi, I'm so glad you can help! Could you sign yourself up as an Online volunteer on [course page]? Scroll all the way down to the bottom. The professor doesn't have any Wikipedia experience, so I'm a little bit worried about this. But hopefully with enough hand-holding, everything will go smoothly. Klortho (talk) 12:41, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
- Hi, I sent you an email. Did you get it? If you don't mind, could you email me at voldrani (at) gmail.com? 69.255.231.180 (talk) 12:34, 7 September 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, I got it. I replied just now, sorry for the delay. • Jesse V.(talk) 18:28, 7 September 2013 (UTC)
Introducing myself - Jim Perry
editHello Jesse V.
I am a student in the JHU Molecular Biology Course, Section 84 and am writing to introduce myself. I was an independent webmaster for a few years and so I am hopeful that I won't need to ask too many questions. So far, everything makes good sense to me! Feel free to click on my user page to learn more about me.
Regards, Jim Perry, Lewes, Delaware (Jim892) (talk) 21:49, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
- Hey Jim, good to hear from you. Sure, I'll take a look. Let me know if you need anything, I'm here to help if you need it. :) • Jesse V.(talk) 03:54, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
- One quick question for you about images. Are we supposed to use "commons" for all images that we post? It seems quicker and easier to just bring them into our page, particularly when it is a photo that we took ourselves. But, want to be sure I'm following all the rules! If you don't mind, please respond to this question on my talk page. Thanks. Jim Perry, Lewes, Delaware (Jim892) (talk) 22:45, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
Doctor blade
editHi: You put an underlinked title on the Doctor blade page. I've added some stuff, a new source, and some links, but I'm not sure whether there is sufficient there to delete the underlinked tag. Would you mind taking a look? Gravuritas (talk) 13:41, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
Hi Jesse!
editHi Jesse,
My name is Erin Neumann Domer. I am from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I work in the Clinical Cytogenetics Lab at Fox Chase Cancer Center. I am currently a student in the Masters in Biotechnology program at Johns Hopkins University. This semester I am enrolled in 410.602.84.FA13 Molecular Biology.
As part of this class, my classmates and I have been charged with the task of making a substantial contribution to a Wikipedia article on a topic of Molecular Biology. For this assignment, the class is broken into groups of two or three people, with each group contributing to a different article. While I have used Wikipedia before as a source of information, I have never served as an author or editor on the site. I am eager to choose and work on an article with my group. I am looking forward to undertaking this new adventure.
Madscientist2007 (talk) 01:33, 28 September 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Erin! Thanks for contacting me. I think most every student has used Wikipedia at some point, whether their in high school or college. It simply is a handy resource. But far less have actually done substantial editing. Authoring an article can be an extremely educational opportunity. Not only does it require you to do a lot of research for the article itself, but you also gain experience with working with others who may or may not have differing viewpoints than you do. You learn how to respond to discussions with facts and citations, and how to help address a problem that they saw that you missed. I think it's a great experience. I'm very pleased to see that there are courses, such as this one, that add this to their curriculum. It should be a win-win all around.
- I'm here to help. If you have any questions or need help with editing, please don't hesitate to ask! • Jesse V.(talk) 15:47, 28 September 2013 (UTC)
- Quick question. How would one go about starting a new section of their main sandbox page? I hit edit but it just took me to text box where I had written my first sandbox assignment. I see that you can start a new section on the sandbox talk page. However, my professor wants our new assignment in a new section on our main sandbox page (which can be reached from our user page through the (/sandbox) link. Madscientist2007 (talk) 02:38, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
- I am having trouble with loading Diberri's Wikipedia template filling tool(http://diberri.crabdance.com/cgi-bin/templatefiller/). As such, I was wondering if you had any suggestions. I do not know if there is another way into this tool. Any advice, ideas, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Madscientist2007 (talk) 18:30, 6 October 2013 (UTC)
- Starting a new section in your sandbox is pretty easy. You should be able to just use equal signs, just like you see at the top of a section. Surround the section title with two equal signs (two on each side) and it should make a section. Use three to make a subsection, and so on. You can do this by clicking edit at the top of the page and make a new section at the bottom, or you can just make a section from within a section. Either way, words surrounded by two equal signs are interpreted as a section and will be created as such.
- Yes, that tool has been down for some time now. There are alternatives however. You might try https://toolserver.org/~holek/cite-gen/index.php instead, although it might just be easier to use the Cite Journal tool from the Edit toolbar as described here. • Jesse V.(talk) 02:52, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Jesse, I have a favor to ask. My group is working on the molecular-weight size marker article. We recently received feedback on our first contribution to the article. One of the comments was that while are article was well cited, the formatting was incorrect. I was wondering if you could take a quick look at our article and maybe provide us with some insight as to what exactly is incorrect and how we might fix it. Thanks in advance, Madscientist2007 (talk) 03:36, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
- Sure thing, I can do that. Pretty busy tonight, I'll see what I can do tomorrow though. • Jesse V.(talk) 05:17, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Hello!
editMy name is Asish Gulati. I am in my first semester in the Master of Science in Biotechnology program at Johns Hopkins University. I am currently enrolled in the AS.410.602.84.FA13 Molecular Biology course. Along with studying, I am also working full-time at a research lab in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Janelia Farm Research Campus. Introduction
editHi Jesse V, I picked you to introduce myself because your name was listed second on my class project instructions. I figure Neelix gets most of the new people as he is listed first. I hope your day is going well. Thanks for volunteering to help us with the project as I have never done any wiki editing before and am already feeling pretty lost (had to go in and edit my posts today because I forgot my tildes). Have a good evening,
Adimart1 (talk) 01:05, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hey Andrea. Editing Wikipedia does take some getting practice, but one you understand how it works, it gets second-nature. I've made all the basic mistakes before, and I think every editor forgets the tildes at some point in time. Nothing to worry about. I would recommend that you start with something simple. Feel free to keep playing around in your sandbox, which I see that you've created. Keep experimenting with various syntax and see how everything works. Once you understand the basic formatting commands, editing becomes much easier. I also find that it's handy to follow examples. If you're trying to do something, it's quite likely that someone else has already done that, so then you can just copy-paste their wiki-code. Wikipedia also has many documentation pages where you can look up how to use a particular thing, or what the rules or suggested uses of something are. Please let me know if you have any questions; I'll be happy to help you. • Jesse V.(talk) 00:11, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

Question on Group Pages
editHello Jesse. What happens if multiple group members edit the group page at the same time? Will one person's edits get lost when another person "saves"? Or, if we edit "just our specific section", does that solve the problem? Thanks much! Jim Perry, Lewes, Delaware (Jim892) (talk) 16:42, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
- This is called an edit conflict. You can see what happens if you open up two tabs and save an edit to your sandbox, and then in the other tab make a different change and try saving. The Mediawiki software (which powers Wikipedia) will see that there is a conflict, and show you the issue. At this point, you have to solve it, and manually merge your changes with the other ones. The first person to hit Save doesn't have to do this of course. Mediawiki is smart though, and won't throw an edit conflict if the multiple users are each editing a different section or subsection. The edit conflict will still happen if more than one user tries editing the section at the same time though. This is similar to how git works, if you've ever done programming with source revision control.
- Ways to avoid this include editing a specific section, as that lowers the chance that you will conflict with someone else's edit. There's nothing wrong with making small edits anyway, rather than large changes. Alternatively, you could copy the wiki-syntax into your text editor of choice, modify it, and when you're ready to save you then merge any changes they made into your copy, and then save the whole thing. This approach has disadvantages of course, one being that you have to be careful to merge all of their changes so that they don't lose their work, but for involved edits I find that this method is fairly fail-safe. You'll likely find your own way to avoid merge conflicts though. • Jesse V.(talk) 19:10, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

Molecular Biology Course - Wikipedia Article Reviews - Unit 11
editHello Jesse, We are needing guidance on which articles to review in Unit 11. The issue is that the layout of the table for "Students/Articles" at the bottom of the Class Assignment page suggests that we will be reviewing a different article each time (Units 9, 11 and 13) with the headers "review 1", review 2", "review 3". However, the "review 2" column (presumably for Unit 11) has not been populated. So it is unclear if we are supposed to review the same article as in Unit 9 or wait for the assignment of a different article. Jim Irwin posted this same question 2 days ago in the Class Discussion Thread on Blackboard, but no response yet. I also sent an email this morning to Dr. Safford, but no response yet. Thanks much, --Jim Perry (Jim892) (talk) 03:00, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
- UPDATE: Dr Stafford posted a response this evening that a request has been issued to update the Class Assignment page for Unit 11. Hopefully this will occur sometime on Sunday. --Jim Perry (Jim892) (talk) 04:53, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

- Well thank you very much! It's been a while since I've actively logged onto Wikipedia, but I don't think I'll ever forget 2011-2013 and the level of productivity and friendship here. Married now, don't have as much free time as before when I was in college, but you'll likely see me around here and there. Thank you so much for checking in! • Jesse V.(talk) 20:57, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
