Clémence de Grandval (1830 - 15 january 1907, Paris) was a female composer of the Romantic era. Although, she is hardly remembered today, she was a person and composer of stature during her life.[1] Unlike most of her contemporaries, she wrote alot for Oboe.
Biography
Clémence de Grandal was born in 1830 as Marie de Reset. Already at a very young age, she recieved composition lessons from composer and family friend Friedrich Flotow. Later she recieved piano lessons from Chopin. Because her family was wealthy, she was able to compose without worrying to make a career of it. A few years later, she married the Victome de Grandval and studied for 2 years with Camille Saint-Saëns.[2] During he life she was a very profilic composer and composed several operas, vocal works and many pieces for Oboe. However, the orchestral scores of some of her pieces are lost.[3]
