In 1989, Clayden was living as an artist in [[France]] and selling paintings, when his brother, bassist/programmer Mark Clayden formed [[Pitchshifter]] (then called Pitch Shifter) and wrote an album. He asked JS to join the band, and he went back to [[England]] where he provided backing vocals to the band's first release, ''[[Industrial (album)|Industrial]]''. After the release of ''Industrial'', he stepped up as the band vocalist, and released the band's second album/EP ''[[Submit]]''.
 
More recently, he emigrated to the United States, where he founded [[PSI Records]], an independent label that provides music for various movies, TV shows and commercials. He also works inat the ''[[Musicians Institute]]'' working as the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
