In 1989, Clayden was living as an artist in [[France]] and selling paintings, when his brother, bassist/programmer Mark Clayden formed [[Pitchshifter]] (then called Pitch Shifter) and wrote an album. He asked JS to join the band, and he went back to [[England]] where he provided backing vocals to the band's first release, ''[[Industrial (album)|Industrial]]''.
