The D.U.Quark publishes a variety of peer-reviewed and staff-written work related to the sciences.

Peer-reviewed articles: Articles should target a scientific audience. These articles are usually an outcome of a course or research experience. Peer-reviewed articles should be a minimum of 2000 words. There is no maximum length. Peer-reviewed articles go through a more extensive peer review process. Potential authors can send inquires, submissions, and consent forms to quarksubmissions@gmail.com

Staff articles: Articles should target a public audience. These can include reports on new research, interviews, opinions, creative, nonfiction, or multi-media projects. Staff articles should be at least 500 words, but not generally over 2000 words. Authors should submit pieces and consent forms directly to the current Editor in Chief or Senior Staff Editor for consideration in an upcoming issue.

All submissions should follow the following formatting and content guidelines:

  1. Citations must be in American Medical Association (AMA) formatting to contribute to consistency and flow within the D.U. Quark. Some requisites of AMA format include but are not limited to: numbered, superscript in-text citations after periods and commas, and a numbered reference list at the end of the paper that is organized by order of appearance (Examples of AMA citations ). If the submission is a staff piece, it may use hyperlinks rather than in-text citations. However, the list of references should still be in AMA style at the end of the article.
  1. All work must be formatted for submission: one-inch margins, 12-point Times New Roman font, and double-spaced main text.
  1. Authors may only use figures or tables they have created themselves, or photographs they have taken themselves. For images, authors are to provide evidence to the Editor-in-Chief they have created the image. If authors used a program to create or edit an image, they must list that software in the caption of the image.
  1. All submissions must be reviewed by a member of The D.U. Quark Staff at a minimum of one review session before publication. Peer-reviewed pieces are usually reviewed by two or more members.
  1. Works containing discriminatory or ‘non-Duquesnable’ language will not be accepted.

6. Authors must sign and submit the “Author Submission Consent” Form for each piece submitted to The D.U.Quark. Authors must also submit the “Professor/PI Release” Form if the submission originated from a class or research project.

The D.U.Quark reserves the right to remove any plagiarism or prohibited content, images, or media from a submission. Failure to adhere to these guidelines will result in your submission being removed from The D.U. Quark.
