When Hypocrisy Reigns And Nothing Is True

Arab Strap are back! Back!! BACK!!! with You You You.

Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton continue to make genuinely thrilling and engaging music. Aidan's words in particular capture the moment - particularly if you're a man on the other side of 50 whose feelings range from numbness to bewilderment at the state of the world - with the merest glimmer of hope in that "I've got you, you, you."

Whether that's a loved one, friends or the community occupying a little corner of the blogosphere, and I can relate to all three, when the writing is this good, how can anything I write about the song feel anything more than gilding the lily?

At the time of posting, it looks like You You You is available for streaming but not (yet) purchase or download. Rest assured, as soon as it's available to buy, I'm buying it!

I’ve got a hole in my shoe that lets in rain,
and another new lump in another vein;
I’ve got pills for breakfast every day,
to keep my pains and fears at bay.
I’ve got a portly paunch I just can’t shift;
I feel undesired, dismissed, adrift.
My get-up-and-go is long gone,
and the days keep dragging on.
But I’ve got you, you, you, you;
I’ve got you, you, you, you;
I’ve got you, you, you, you;
I’ve got you, you, you.

I’ve got a hole in my head that can’t be filled;
time is never spent, it’s only killed.
I’m always bored, it seems nothing excites me –
my own limbic system fights me!
I’ve got watchlists I’ll never watch,
and pruritus scroti in my crotch;
I’ve got a seething sadness in my soul,
that might just swallow me whole.
But I’ve got you, you, you, you;
I’ve got you, you, you, you;
I’ve got you, you, you, you;
I’ve got you, you, you.

I’ve got tears in my eyes again tonight,
as the tyrannised unite and fight;
there’s a fiery frog in my throat now,
from all that singing: Bella ciao!
I’ve got my day in court that can’t be missed,
‘cause the government claims I’m a terrorist;
I fear for my son, I fear for my daughter,
but in this world of slaughter
I’ve got you, you, you, you;
I’ve got you, you, you, you;
I’ve got you, you, you, you;
I’ve got you, you, you.
(Yes I do)

And if you’re streaming this song on Spotify,
then we both fund weapons-grade AI.
But if it wasn’t here, then how would you hear it?
We’re over a barrel, but we don’t have to cheer it.
I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE FUCK TO DO
when hypocrisy reigns and nothing is true,
and nobody pays for abhorrent behaviour –
FUCK THESE DEMAGOGUES COSPLAYING SAVIOURS

With a rose in my fist,
and a song in my lungs,
I reach for a hand,
and I’ve got you, you, you, you;
I’ve got you, you, you, you;
I’ve got you, you, you, you;
I’ve got you, you, you.

Start Anew

Welcome to 2026!

A new year brings a new selection of 26 songs for '26, all featuring a new something or other.

99 minutes of top tunes, starting with Beady Eye, Liam's better-than-Oasis band.

There are a handful of '70s and '80s artists, including The Undertones, The Adverts, Breathless, Beastie Boys and Asleep At The Wheel covering Huey Lewis & The News.

A fistful of '90s fun (well, depending on your definition of fun) comes courtesy of Arab Strap, Epic Soundtracks, The Magnetic Fields and Martin Stephenson & The Daintees.

It's mostly 21st century music though, some old, some new, something for everyone from The Isley Brothers ft. De La Soul to Tokyo Police Club, BANKS to Beverly Kills.

A couple of 2025 highlights from Xan Tyler & Dusty Stray and Bedford Falls Players and, to wrap things up, Billy sings Billy, that is, Billy Nomates sings Billy Bragg.

Triptych

I couldn't decide which to post, so here's three new(ish) singles and videos from Arab Strap, Depeche Mode and Beth Gibbons all at once.

First up, it's Aidan Moffat, Malcolm Middleton and gang with Strawberry Moon from the upcoming - and brilliantly titled - album I'm totally fine with it 👍don't give a fuck anymore Vampires, werewolves, Aidan as a priest on a mobility scooter with "I 💔 Jesus" bumper sticker...my favourite video of the three. Sadly, another band that I will have to miss live this time around due to the embarrassment of pre-festival gigs landing locally during May but I'm looking forward to hearing the album when it's released on 10th May.

Unless I blinked and missed it, no sign of Dave Gahan and Martin Gore in the video for Depeche Mode's People Are Good, the umpteenth single from last year's Memento Mori album, which I still haven't bought...call myself a fan?! Anton Corbijn is credited as creative director and the video itself is directed by Rich Hall, not the taciturn American polymath but a London based creator working with Riff Riff Films. All the Corbijn characteristics are there, but it's an interesting, narrative-based departure from the Mode videos I'm more familiar with. The song's pretty good too, though I'm less excited by the slew of remixes accompanying the single release.

Finally, and the newest of the lot, is a second preview of Beth Gbbons' solo album with Reaching Out. This is least engaging video for me, reminiscent (possibly intentionally) of the visuals that the Future Sound Of London and the like were producing 30-odd years ago. There is an interactive version too, which didn't do a lot for me either to be honest. However, the music and Beth's voice are just breathtaking. I'd love to see the movie that this is the theme song to.

Beth's album, Lives Outgrown, is out on 17th May. That's 36 days if, like me, you're counting.

You Can Touch It But It Will Still Not Fade

Side 2 of a cassette compilation, recorded 11th January 1998.

When I posted Side 1 in July 2022, I described it as "eight remixes that I was unlikely to ever hear down the local indie disco, but which in their own way, kick ass." Side 2 is all that, and more.

If there's a duff remix of Planet Telex by Radiohead, I've yet to hear it. The UNKLE remix was possibly the first one that I heard, tucked away on one of the CD singles for Just, and it remains my favourite.

Likewise, K-Klass took New Order's Ruined In A Day and elevated it to a higher plain, surpassing the original to the extent that I'm pretty sure that this was the version the band 'performed' when they appeared on Top Of The Pops. Or, at least if it's not true, that's how I prefer to remember it.

Arab Strap's reworking of Don't Die Just Yet by David Holmes has appeared here before, as well as in a guest post that I did in January 2021 for The Vinyl Villain. Again, a remarkably strong bundle of remixes from Mogwai, Delakota and Holmes himself and Messrs. Moffat and Middleton.

Mixed in are some trip hop beats from Attica Blues vs. Lightning Seeds, a bit of drum 'n' bass from Tamsin Elliott vs. Faithless and Lush taken on a gothtronica excursion by Spooky. And then there's Beck, put through the aural equivalent of a meat grinder by Aphex Twin and somehow surviving.

Closing on a funky but rather more sedate pace is Jon Carter, shrugging off his Monkey Mafia mantle to mix the Manics. Phat beats and a trumpet, what more could you want?

1) Planet Telex (Karma Sunra Mix By UNKLE): Radiohead (1995)
2) You Showed Me (Attica Blues Vocal Mix) (Cover of The Turtles): Lightning Seeds (1997)
3) Richard's Hairpiece (Remix Of "Devil's Haircut" By Aphex Twin): Beck (1997)
4) Ruined In A Day (Reunited In A Day Remix By K-Klass): New Order (1993)
5) Reverence (Tamsin's Re-Fix By Tamsin Elliott): Faithless (1996)
6) The Holiday Girl (Don't Die Just Yet) (Remixed By Arab Strap): David Holmes (1997)
7) Undertow (Spooky Remix By Charlie May & Duncan Forbes): Lush (1994)
8) Kevin Carter (Busts Loose) (Remixed By Jon Carter): Manic Street Preachers (1996)

1993: Ruined In A Day EP: 4
1994: Hypocrite EP: 7

1996: Kevin Carter EP: 8

Everywhere Yet Nowhere

Why has it taken me so long to post a Dot Allison selection? This one's been drifting around my consciousness for over a year, since Dot's spectacular return with Heart-Shaped Scars, her first album in nearly a decade.

I've been a huge fan of all things Dot since she emerged with One Dove in the early 1990s and I've followed her solo career over seven albums and numerous collaborations with the likes of Slam, Death In Vegas, Scott Walker and Sunn O))).

2022 saw the release of The Entangled Remix EP, featuring reworks of five songs by Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Lomond Campbell, Anton Newcombe, Saint Etienne and The Anchoress aka Catherine Anne Davies. Both the EP and Heart-Shaped Scars are available on digital and physical formats from Bandcamp and you really need both in your life.

Joy of joy, Dot posted this week that she's midway through her new album, mixing starts this month with a planned release in 2023. Too much to hope that Dot will go out on tour as well? Fingers crossed.

As I'd planned to post this selection on a Sunday, it's a slightly more relaxed affair, heavier on the acoustics than the electronics, although the BPMs do occasionally ramp up. It's a mix of solo and collaborations, spanning an unreleased, unfinished song, Untouched, from One Dove's planned second album in 1994 through to a song she co-wrote with Mark Peters, released as a single in July this year. The full length version of
Switch On The Sky appears with another Dot Allison co-write on Mark's album Red Sunset Dreams, out last month and also highly recommended.

There are a couple of cover versions of Scott Walker and Neil Young (I wanted to included another, of Daniel Johnston, but ran out of space) and a couple of duets with Pete Doherty and Paul Weller.

The selection closes with a version of Message Personnel, from Dot's debut solo album, here remixed by those lovely Arab Strap boys, Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton.

All in, just over an hour of beautiful music to make you fall in love with Dot Allison all over again.

1) Lullaby: Christian Henson ft. Dot Allison (2009)

Preacher Beats

Today's selection is a David Holmes mix CD that I did for my friend Dave way back in March 2005. Dave and I met in 1998 when I joined the careers service in Bristol; he was one of the ICT team. We immediately bonded over a shared love of music, clubbing and gigs and over the years swapped a ton of mix CDs and DIY rips. David Holmes was a particular favourite, although in hindsight gifting Dave with 5 different homemade CD-Rs might have been a little excessive...

This is the third in the series, mostly collating Holmes' remixes of other artists from the years 1994 to 1999, and I love it. It's a good example of how exciting David Holmes was back then and why he's still up there today, creating music and DJ sets that make you pause and wonder at the brilliance of it all. I saw him perform live several times in the 1990s and 2000s, including a gig by The Free Association which I wrote about in a previous post. David Holmes' latest single, Hope Is The Last Thing To Die, is one of my personal musical highlights of 2021.

The other thing that Dave and I have in common is the same birthday, today. Dave sadly succumbed to cancer in 2009 and I think of him and miss him a lot. We knew each other for a little over 10 years and I will be forever grateful for that. Every birthday, I raise a drink to him and listen to music, some which came out after he passed, but which I know would make him smile and move. This one's for you (again), Dave.

1) Talk About The Blues (For The Saints And Sinners Remix By David Holmes): The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (1999)
2) Wish You Were Here... (David Holmes Vocal): The Aloof (1996)
3) Blow The Whole Joint Up (Let's Slash The Beats Mix By David Holmes): Monkey Mafia (1995)
4) Smoked Oak: David Holmes (1995)
5) Die Laughing (David Holmes Mix 1 By David Holmes, Jagz Kooner & Gary Burns): Therapy? (1994)
6) Failure (David Holmes Remix): Skinny (1998)
7) Hoops (David Holmes Mix): Ruby (1996)
8) I Thought I Caught (David Holmes Remix): Delakota (1998)
9) Live From The Opium Den (David Holmes Main Mix By David Holmes, Jagz Kooner & Gary Burns): Justin Warfield (1994)
10) This Is Fascism (Experimental Plastic Racism) (Remix By David Holmes) (Cover of Consolidated): New Fast Automatic Daffodils (1996)
11) The Holiday Girl (Don't Die Just Yet) (Remixed By Arab Strap): David Holmes (1997)

Skimming Not Swimming

Is it really 25 years since Two Lone Swordsmen released remix album/EP Swimming Not Skimming? Apparently so. On 25th November 1996, Andrew Weatherall and Keith Tenniswood shared a clutch of new songs and remixes on 2x 12" and CD with slightly different tracks and running orders on each format. I bought it on shiny disc a couple of years later and it's one of Weatherall's best, in any of his various guises and incarnations.

Today's selection is a 5-track sampler, skimming some choice tracks (do you see what I did there?). In The Nursery's remix is exclusive to the CD version and the Musique Tropique remix of Rico's Helly only appeared on the vinyl version.

1) In The Nursery Visit Glenn Street [Glenn Street Assault Squad] (1996)
2) Rico's Helly (Retailored By Nourizadeh & Teasdale aka Omid Nourizadeh & Anthony Teasdale) (1996)
3) Glide By Shooting (Remix By Andrew Weatherall & Keith Tenniswood) (1996)
4) Rico's Helly (Musique Tropique Remix By Andy Carrick & Kevin McKay) (1996)
5) Flossie Wears Paco And Ralph (Remix By Andrew Weatherall & Keith Tenniswood) (1996)

2882

2882 is the number of days since I last played any of the songs in today's selection, which has been (very) roughly split into a "melody" and "dance" side. Highlights include a rare version from Mick Jones' brief sojourn as the truncated Big Audio, my favourite version of Moonlight Drive from the posthumous odds & sods album Alive She Cried, Jaz Coleman rapping with his cousin JC-001 and of course any song featuring the beautiful voice of Hope Sandoval. I'll try not to leave it so long next time.

Side One (21:48)
1) The Good Part: Arab Strap (2003)
2) Help Is Coming: Crowded House (1994)
3) Moonlight Drive / Horse Latitudes (Live @ Felt Forum, New York, 18 January 1970): The Doors (1970)
4) Harrow Road (Ska Mix): Big Audio (1994)
5) Row Fisherman (Dub): Wailing Souls (1979)

Side Two (20:45)
1) Stay One Jump Ahead (Extended Mix): Killing Joke ft. JC-001 (1988)
2) Masterhit (Part III - LP Version): Front 242 (1987)
3) Paradise Circus (Gui Boratto Remix): Massive Attack ft. Hope Sandoval (2010)
