This isn’t easy. I’m pretty stoic when it comes to death, but this one broke me. Chris Cornell got me through some of my toughest years in basic training and all the strange twists and turns that followed. Every winter I turn to Soundgarden to get me through my seasonal depression. He understood. My heart is broken. I’ve never cried about a musician who’s left us. Perhaps it was the tragedy of these circumstances, but for the first time, I sobbed. Rest in peace, Chris. We will remember you with fondness. (Billy)

Today, Agalloch announced it was calling it a day after two illustrious decades of music making:
“Following 20 years, 5 full length albums, many tours around the world, and numerous other recordings, John Haughm and the rest of the band (Don Anderson, Jason Walton, and Aesop Dekker) have parted ways. What the future holds for the separate parties remains undetermined. We collectively thank all of our fans across the world. RIP: Paul Van Linden of Grimpen Mire
Less than 24 hours ago, Birmingham, UK doom-sludge act GRIMPEN MIRE posted this tragic news:
It is with an exceptionally heavy heart that I have to type this, but Paul lost his life last night. Obviously we are all devastated and our thoughts are with his family. RIP Paul, our life long brother and best friend.
Paul was a key creative force behind Grimpen Mire, serving as the vocalist and bassist for the 8-year old trio, who described their sound as “future noise.”
On behalf of myself and all the Doomed & Stoned contributors, we extend our deepest sympathies to the family and the band during this time of unspeakable loss.
We pay tribute by calling attention to some of the band’s best work, the 2012 album ‘A Plague Upon Your Houses,’ which the band really poured their hearts into and has stood well the test of time. Through the music, Paul still speaks.

RIP: Terry Jones of Pagan Altar
We received sad news that Terry Jones of the highly influential NWOBHM band Pagan Altar has passed away.

It’s is with great sadness to announce that Terry Jones of Pagan Altar finally lost his extremely Brave Battle with cancer this morning 15th May @ 10:15. Terry has been fighting this for the past year with me Lynn and his family always by his side. You all know how much he loved performing and especially to all the wonderful PA Fans he had a pleasure to meet. We are all devoted by his loss and will miss him more than words can say. And would like to thank you for your loyal support and love all these years. Always love you Terry. The Time Lord is on his Travels

RIP Andy Fraser of Free, who died today at age 62. “All Right Now” topped the charts in more than a dozen countries and peaked at #4 on Billboard’s Hot 100. This is a rare recording from 1969.
Underdogs of Doom: A Tribute to Jonathan Athon
Last week, the world of metal was shocked by the sudden death of Black Tusk’s JONATHAN ATHON, who died tragically at the age of 32 in a motorcycle accident caused by a distracted motorist. When I got wind of it, I was crushed. Having already planned my broadcast to focus on “Underdogs of Doom” and set to go live within hours, I worked with Grip of Delusion Radio to clear time so that we could pay tribute to this amazing soul. May Athon’s memory live loud and proud through the music he created.

RIP Jason McCash - Gates of Slumber
Jason McCash (far left), passed away today (4/6/14). He was one of the founding members of Gates of Slumber from Indianapolis, Indiana, along with Karl Simon (center). Also pictured, Chris Gordon (one of several drummers the long-running band had throughout it’s two decades).
“My best friend died last night. There will be no reunion - no more of TGoS. It’s dead beyond dead, and I’ve lost a brother. Please be respectful or silent. It’s a small world and I’m still alive. Remember that shit.” - Karl Simon (guitarist/vocalist, GoS)
“Shocked and saddened to hear that Jason McCash of The Gates of Slumber passed away suddenly at the age of 37. Jason and I spent many, many hours in the studio together working on the Gates’ LPs and EPs. He was a hell of a musician and an incredibly warm and thoughtful human being. We were supposed to get together recently to work on remastering one of his projects; I’m sad that we won’t get that chance now. Rest in peace, brother. A memorial fund has been set up to help the McCash family pay for Jason’s funeral expenses, which as you know are not inexpensive for anyone. In my Sunday night live broadcast on Grip of Delusion radio, I will be paying tribute to our fallen metal brother in the first hour of the program (7-9 pm PST/10 pm - Midnight EST).
