PhD Defence: Ingrid Eklundh Sørensen We are pleased to announce the PhD Defence of Ingrid Eklundh Sørensen at DTU Chemistry. How do ions influence the behavior of polymers in water? 💧 In her PhD, Ingrid Eklundh Sørensen explores how ion-specific interactions influence aqueous polymers, from simple polymer solutions to charged polymer materials. 🧪🔬 Using a combination of freezing experiments ❄️ and advanced spectroscopic methods, the work shows how the hydration of ions 💧⚛️ and the formation of ion pairs control key material properties, including freezing and swelling. ❄️💦 These findings provide new insight into the molecular interactions that govern aqueous polymer systems. 🔎 These insights improve our fundamental understanding of aqueous polymers and provide new opportunities for designing functional materials, including hydrogels, anti-icing coatings, and other water-based polymer technologies. 💧🧪✨ 📅 Thursday, 20 August 2026 at 13:00 📍 DTU - Technical University of Denmark, Building 208, Aud. 53 👨🏫 Principal Supervisor: Professor Esben Thormann, DTU Chemistry 👨🔬 Co-supervisors: Professor Kristoffer Almdal, DTU Chemistry; Professor Eric Tyrode, KTH, Sweden; Dr. Johannes Eiler, Coloplast 👨🔬 Examiners: Professor Günther Peters, DTU Chemistry; Professor Saskia Lindhoud, University of Twente, the Netherlands; Associate Professor Leonid Gurevich, Aalborg University 👨🔬Chairperson: Sebastian Meier, DTU Chemistry 👏 Congratulations to Ingrid on her research and best of luck with the PhD Defence! #PhDDefence #PhD #PolymerScience #Polymers #Polyelectrolytes #PhysicalChemistry #Spectroscopy #Hydrogels #AntiIcing #MaterialsScience #Chemistry #Research #WaterBasedMaterials #DTU #DTUChemistry

New preprint: A molecular magnet that remains ordered above 600 K 🧲🥵 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ejjnyyaZ Our new preprint reports Mo(pyrazine)₃, a crystallographically well-defined metal–organic framework (3D-ED structure 👇) showing nearly compensated ferrimagnetism and magnetic hysteresis up to at least 625 K (352 °C). The magnetic compensation persists over a broad temperature range, while calculations point to exceptionally strong radical-mediated exchange involving the diffuse 4d orbitals of Mo(III). Remarkably, we do not observe the intrinsic magnetic ordering transition before the framework itself begins to degrade. This work builds on our recent study of Cr(pyrazine)₃, showing how moving from 3d to 4d metal ions can push magnetic energy scales substantially higher. Robust and tunable compensated ferrimagnets are attractive for future spintronic technologies because they combine magnetic order with very small stray fields—properties that could be valuable for densely integrated magnetic devices and ultrafast spin dynamics. Mo(pyrazine)₃ shows that these properties can be chemically encoded in a molecular framework and maintained far above room temperature. The work was spearheaded by Niki M., Alexandros Kitos, and Frédéric Aribot with critical contributions from Nathan J. Happy to share that one of the main projects from my postdoc has finally been published in Nature Catalysis, Nature Portfolio! 🎉 In this work, we used operando Raman spectroscopy to directly observe the formation of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) during lithium-mediated ammonia synthesis. Following these changes in real time provided new insight into how the SEI evolves and governs nitrogen activation and ammonia production. One result I found especially fascinating was directly observing how ethanol actively reshapes the SEI through the formation of lithium ethoxide, rather than simply acting as a proton source. Together with the electrolyte anion, it governs the dynamic evolution and composition of the SEI, highlighting electrolyte chemistry as a key factor in nitrogen activation and ammonia synthesis. I am grateful to Yang Shao-Horn, Haldrian Iriawan, Louis Ah, Electrochemical Energy Lab, MIT and all of my collaborators at Massachusetts Institute of Technology as well as the Gates Foundation for making this work possible. How can we make green chemicals more affordable? DTU startup Reformable is demonstrating that an answer can be turning CO₂ from a challenge into a valuable resource. By developing an innovative catalyst that converts CO₂ and methane into syngas, a key building block for the chemical industry, Reformable is creating a cost-effective pathway towards renewable fuels and chemicals without relying on expensive electrolytic hydrogen. Reformables solution is based on innovative, proven technologies and already known and tested processes. It is a solution the industry calls for, and it fits into existing value chains. Through the VILLUM-P2X-Accelerator program, the startup has refined, upscaled, and developed a patented catalyst system, enhancing both its activity by 25% and stability by 15%, leading to a performance that makes it attractive for industrial use for example biogas producers and biogas plants. A great example of how research and innovation can help accelerate the transition to a more sustainable chemical industry. #DTU #VillumFonden

DTU Chemistry is pleased to announce the PhD defence of Andreas Nisson, presenting the thesis: Development of a dynamic dual-enzyme approach to the synthesis of unnatural cyclodextrins. Cyclodextrins (CDs) are water-soluble, non-toxic sugar rings widely used in 💊 pharmaceuticals, 🌱 agriculture, and 💄 cosmetics. Their ability to trap small molecules makes them attractive for applications ranging from drug delivery to 💧 PFAS removal. ⚗️ This PhD thesis introduces an innovative dynamic dual-enzyme strategy to produce modified CDs more efficiently. 🧪 Two enzymes work together to build and cyclise glucose chains, enabling the incorporation of different chemical modifications. 🔄 🎯 Because the system is dynamic, conditions can be tuned to selectively produce CDs of desired sizes and with a specific degree of modification. 🛠️ Overall, the thesis expands the cyclodextrin chemistry toolbox and provides a promising alternative to lengthy, stepwise chemical synthesis. 🌟 📅 Date and time: Tuesday, 30 June 2026 at 13:00 📍 Location: DTU - Technical University of Denmark, Building 208, Aud. 53 🌐 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eB3Acg4p 📘 Thesis: Development of a dynamic dual-enzyme approach to the synthesis of unnatural cyclodextrins. #Cyclodextrins #Biocatalysis #Enzymes #DynamicCombinatorialChemistry🧬 #DrugDelivery 💊 #SmartMaterials ✨ #ChemicalSynthesis ⚗️ #SupramolecularChemistry 💧 #PhDResearch 🎓 #Innovation #DTU #DTUChemistry
