My 5 Star Review:
This is such a beautiful book full of hope that illuminates with deep poetry to help lift us out of the darkness, if only for a while. As the author says in her notes, “I chose hope as the theme for this book because, quite simply, without hope there is nothing.” Each poem tells a story and fills the heart.
There are many poems in this book. Although I hesitate to call them poems, but more of mini lessons, short stories, some warnings, and some evoked in ethereal voice. You will find writings on love, loss. hope, belief, aging, wisdom, and so much more, all encompassing the human condition, and each poem offers light and inspiration through every journey written. There is something for everyone to uplift and resonate with heart.
A few of my favorite poems:
Hope Floats:
“Hope floats, as a fated ship
is dragged to its demise on
the seabed. Hope rises when
everything else is sinking.
Hope flies when there are
no wings and hope drives,
without an engine . . .”
.
How do I live without you?
“oh, my love, I do not
you are with me from the moment
I open my eyes
until they close
and even after that
on the plane of dreams
where souls and mortals meet
you are with me still
I’ve not begun to live without you
perhaps I never will
the truth of the matter is
you are always with me still . . .”
.
Without Hope
“Without hope, grief will
surely steal your life. Without
believing you will see them
again, that they still exist
around you in energy, that
their love is fuelling yours,
grief will make a wasteland of
your world. Do not let some-
thing born of such beauty,
of such joy, become your
downfall. It was supposed to
be your purpose, the fire in
your belly, the reason you go
on. Hope is the space between
having them here and know-
ing they are still with you. . . ”
.
The Witch Wound
“They call it the witch wound
we were punished, you see
broken, slain
for shining too brightly
so we learned to hide that spark
we learned to play it down
play dumb, play dead
and we were taught to fear
the light within us
lest it herald our downfall
but not anymore . . .”
.
.
The Rise of the Elders
“Bring back the rise
of the Elders
the wise
the revered
the fabulously aged
and learned
society is amiss
of this order right now
we dismiss the old
ignore them
when we should be placing them
atop bedazzled pedestals
drinking in their every word
for the treasure maps of this life
live within their stories . . . “
.
The Karma Thief
“I think karma is a giant jar
of light we store within our
souls. And every time we say or do something kind, we take
light from that jar and give
it away. And karma, being
the magical force that it is,
will send that light back to
us on days when we need it
most . . .”
