Sunday Book Review – Nine Black Lives by Resa McConaghy

My Sunday Book Review is for Resa McConaghy’s book – Nine Black Lives. Resa is a Canadian film costume designer, a great photographer, and it turns out, also a talented writer. I’m so glad I finally revived this book from drowning in my Kindle, and enjoyed this fictional whodunit with wonderful descriptions of what goes on behind the scenes as a costume designer, which Resa definitely incorporated into this tale of glitz and glamour of Nicky Faime’s life playing lead Detective Black solving crime in the movie Nine Black Lives, but in this double plot, Nicky has also taken to playing detective in real life when someone from his set dies.

Nine Black Lives

Nicky is an actor, vain, jaded and tired of Hollywood fluff. He holes up, brooding in his New York apartment only to accept yet another “detective” role scheduled to shoot in his grey and gritty home turf. As stalkers move in and a real life murder taps him on the shoulder, Nicky enters a dangerous Neo Noir world. Peril looms to all those around him, including his love Lara and their unborn son. With the chill of premonition creeping over him, and wielding his “detective” skills, Nicky must awaken the true man within before time runs out.

I enjoyed this book so much. The characters were well drawn and colorful. And the storyline was entertaining and engaging.

Nicky Faime is a famous actor, now around forty years old. It begins with him manned up in his apartment, alone, wanting to get in mode for the new role he’s taking on for the movie – Nine Black Lives. We’ll learn of other characters who work on set, such as Lucille, the costume designer and her sister Loreen. And the huge fan clubs that Nicky has, as some of their desires and antics are displayed.

Lucille is busy with her sister collecting used costumes from set to donate, or maybe even sell. Lucille discovered a fan online who wanted the jacket Nicky wore in one of his shows. Lucille decides to meet with the fan and flatout gives her the jacket. The jacket becomes very symbolic throughout the story.

Nicky’s new role is playing a detective. But when someone in Nicky’s circle of set helpers is found killed, Nicky takes it upon himself to spend his free time playing detective for real to try and find the killer.

The storyline is actually two storylines because we are taken into story of Nicky’s Nine Black Lives while filming on set, and are also caught up in Nicky playing real live detective to find a murderer. This heats things up nicely as we approach the last few chapters when Nicky throws an after filming party at his place, which turns into an Agatha Christie-esque suspense when all the guests at his table become suspects of the real murder as Nicky has something to say to each of them.

There are plenty of red herrings to keep us engaged. And if that’s not enough, Nicky becomes stalked by someone and suspects they could be the murderer. Or is the murderer a little closer to home? The suspense will keep you turning the pages with rich descriptions and quirky characters, and a glimpse into the shenanigans on the back of a movie set – costume – makeup- hair, thanks to the author’s real life experience.

A Note To Readers from the author, Resa McConaghy:

Resa asked me to mention here that she wrote an alternate ending to this book too. On her website, Resa offers a FREE download for her book with that ending. My review is based on the unchanged ending from the book I purchased on Amazon, which wasn’t changed on that book, for Resa’s personal reasons. I’ve now read both last chapters and endings and can assure readers, both endings sum up the story similarly. Visit Resa’s website and download a copy!

Sunday Book Review – The Bookstore Keepers by Alice Hoffman (Book 3 in, The Once Upon a Time Bookstore series)

My Sunday Book Review is for Alice Hoffman’s The Bookstore Keepers. A charming short story series. The two bookstore sisters are back with more of life’s situations on Brinkley’s Island in Maine.

Get this book on Amazon

From New York Times bestselling author Alice Hoffman comes a deeply moving short story about the love of family and the power of dreams.

The Gibson sisters weren’t expecting to speak to each other ever again after Isabel ran off to New York and left Sophie alone. But here they are, years later, running the family bookstore together on Brinkley’s Island, Maine. Isabel also thought she’d left Johnny Lenox behind, but whether or not she knew it, Johnny was always going to be there for her.

Five years into their happily ever after, Isabel and Johnny are making the most of their second chance at love. Then one night, Johnny awakens from an extraordinary dream…and their world is irrevocably altered. Isabel does her best to give Johnny space as he struggles to accept the new chapter life has opened for them. But Johnny can’t do it alone—no one can. As the whole family is soon to discover, seasons change, but love never does.

This is third short story book in this engaging series about love, family, choices, grief, and how this family reacts through it all. Sisters Isabel and Sophie continue to run the family bookstore, but things are about to change as Sophie’s daughter, Violet, wishes to broaden her horizons and is contemplating leaving the island and bookstore and experiencing Paris.

Johnny and Isabel are living happily in their wedded bliss along with their dog Hank. But decisions Johnny and Isabel made together about life choices are now being revisited as old feelings of past begin to surface.

As always, Hoffman’s writing is wonderfully written as she draws well-fleshed characters, and brings us into a story of family, love, and emotional decisions. While I’ve been enjoying this series I’ve taken off one star because I found the ending a bit non remarkable, but still a good read.

Journey to an Ear Flush – Doctors, Walkin Clinics, Hearing Clinic

After several attempts to flush my ears, I threw up my hands and wound up where I should have gone in the first place.

Last november I had my annual physical and Dr. W. is very thorough. When she checked my ears, she told me I had impacted wax in my right ear. As this seems to be the norm this past decade, I told her it seems that approximately every 3-5 years I have to get my ears flushed. Some people just manifacture wax. I asked Dr. W. if she’d remove it, but time had elapsed and she told me to make another appointment so she could do it. Sure, not so convenient, as she’s up north of the city, about a 35 minute drive. Winter was approaching on that visit and I didn’t relish the thought of driving up there again if it was snowing or the roads were bad.

I always use homeopathic eardrops for this problem, and don’t put anything other than drops in my ears. The drops are to soften wax and eventually anything there would fall out in the shower. No such luck. I bought some apparatus to flush my own ears from Amazon – to no avail.

I still didn’t feel like I was in a fishtank with plugged ears, so I thought I’d wait and go to a walkin clinic in Mexico when I went there for my winter vacation. Ironically, one of my Canadian friends in Mexico who stays in the ‘friends’ condo building, mentioned that her sister went to the walkin clinic up the road because her ear was totally plugged. My ears perked up.

I asked her how it went and how much? She told me her sister was ecstatic like she could suddenly hear again and only paid $1000 Pesos, equivalent of about $70 Canadian dollars. The next morning I walked the twenty minutes up the main street to the clinic. It surely wasn’t busy, it was state of the art decorated and I was hopeful. I went to the reception desk and asked for an ear flush procedure. This young girl, a little more interested in her phone than doing her job, looked up at me and told me it will cost $3000 Pesos. I retorted, “Are you kidding me?” She looked puzzled.

The receptionist continued to break down the ridiculous money grab. I differed with her information. I also told her my friend Marian D. was there, I gave her the date and time, and added, I know for a fact she paid $1000 Pesos. Her reply, was some made up BS . I may have left some unpleasant words as I stomped out and headed back to the condo. Mission unsuccessful.

I promised myself I’d make a doctor appointment when the weather got better, but winter was trudging along nonstop, after we had our fake start spring. I had a dentist appointment, which is next to the pharmacy I use, who had recently sold some of their large space to some doctors. I realized they had a walkin clinic right there. I decided, what the hay, I’m going to kill two birds at once.

After the dental appointment, I walked into the clinic, went to reception, asked her if they could flush my ear, and she told me they could do it, at a cost of $40. So worth it at this point, despite it being free if I went to my doctor’s office.

At this point, I don’t need someone looking in my ear to tell me what I can already feel, again, like there’s something deep residing in my eardrum. The doctor takes a look in both ears and announces, “there’s nothing there.” I was not a happy camper. I proceeded to ask her how on earth she could say that to me, especially knowing my problem, and my doctor saw it in November and it was now April. She was lacking a bedside manner, but proceeded to grab an apparatus – the same useless thing I used unsuccessfully at home! Again, not a happy camper, but I let her do her thing. Of course nothing came out, because you need a certain pressure to do a flush, not a bloody squirt gun. I stood up and grabbed my purse, without a word I walked out.

I stopped at the reception desk where I was to pay for that service. I told the girl that I was sorry but I refuse to pay for a service I didn’t get done. She said, “Okay,” and I left.

Next . . .

I finally made an appointment to go back to Dr. W’s office and get the matter rectified. That was over three weeks ago. She brought out the big stainless steel bazooka ear flusher and flushed my ear three times – TO NO AVAIL. Nothing came out. She then said she’s have to use a curator tool to grab on to the wax. A tiny dot was lassooed out. Unsatisfactory. Dr. W. proceeded to tell me she had no other tools and preferred I go see an ENT specialist to perform the removal. It was Saturday, and she said she’d email me a referral during the week.

Dr. W. was in the midst of moving her offices two days later. The place was in disarray, and unsurprisingly, I never got a call back for an ENT appointment. Heck nobody was even answering the office phones. I was pissed.

Last week I took it upon myself to Google up Hearing Clinics. I’ve seen a lot of ads for these clinics lately offering free hearing exams to seniors. I called one close to me and asked if they also did wax removal. THEY DID! As this was a private institute I was told I’d have to pay $50 for each ear. I told the receptionists I was more than happy to pay to rectify this ongoing saga, and that I only had one ear to contend with.

I went there last Thursday. Literally a five minute drive from my home. Josh the audiologist looked in my ears and told me there is nothing blocking my ear drum, but just a little wax surrounded the site. He let me see it on camera screen. It looked so minute to cause such annoying havoc with my hearing. But in one swift motion he removed another bit of wax. I was disappointed not find come out what I was used to seeing come out through the years of ear flushing, but I guess all those lubricating ear drops have helped minimize the wax accumulation.

After the removal Josh asked me if I had time to do a hearing test FREE. I said, why not! It was weird locked into what seemed like a recording booth, him asking me to repeat words and hit the mic button every time I heard beeps. He told me my hearing is almost perfect and one ear failed to hear a few beeps that he thought I didn’t have to worry about anything presently. That was a relief!

When I left, I went back to reception to pay Erika (who we’d already become chums), when Josh walked out at same time and told Erika not to charge me!

Motto of my story: If you want something done, make it happen yourself because this world is just too busy to keep up with all of our needs.

Sunday Book Review – Love Never Dies by Jamie Turndorf

Welcome to my Sunday Book Review. Today I’m reviewing a book that jumped out at me when Hay House was offering special pricing on their spiritual collection – Love Never Dies: How to Reconnect and Make Peace with the Deceased by Dr. Jamie Turndorf.

Get This Book on Amazon

Find out why the world has fallen in love with Love Never Dies, the no. 1 International Bestseller by famed relationship therapist, author and media personality Dr. Jamie Turndorf, aka Dr. Love. Famed relationship therapist, author and media personality Dr. Jamie Turndorf —known worldwide as Dr. Love— shares the amazing true story of her spiritual reconnection with her beloved deceased husband, internationally renowned former Jesuit priest Emile Jean Pin. Discovering for herself that relationships don’t end in death, Jamie recounts her remarkable experience where, through the depths of her grief after Jean’s sudden passing, her husband made known his continued presence–and undying love.
Drawing on these personal encounters, Jamie has created a groundbreaking new form of grief therapy that combines her acclaimed conflict-resolution techniques with after-death communication. The result: an unprecedented method that enables the bereaved to reconnect, resolve unfinished business, and make peace with the deceased.

Filled with dozens of examples of spirit contact and communication, this book eliminates any doubt about life after death and shows that contact is ongoing. Loved ones in spirit don’t just linger briefly before going to “heaven” and disappearing from your life. Rather, heaven is a state, not a place, and your loved ones have an eternity to support you and heal any issues left behind when they passed on.

Come to recognize the numerous signs from spirit that you may have been missing. Learn to trust yourself and the process that’s right for you–not a shortened, artificial grief period prescribed by conventional doctors. Practice techniques for heightening your senses, expanding your awareness, and entering an open state, culminating in Jamie’s method for Dialoguing with the Departed.

When connection and love live on, fear is banished and relationships can grow and heal as never before. Begin opening your mind and your heart today!

Death is not the end. This book leaped out at me when I came across it. As one who is spiritual and have experienced connections from the beyond, this book warmed my heart as a widow who has lost the love of her life. These pages spoke to me.

The book is written, not as a ‘how to’ or instructional guide, but as a memoir told by the story of Dr. Jamie Turndorf – aka, Dr. Love, who fell in love with a once Jesuit priest, Emile Jean Pin – two soulmates with a span of almost forty years between them in age, and a love that never died. Although I don’t need any confirmation that my husband’s spirit is always around me, this book is an eye-opener about a love that spanned beyond Emile’s life on earth.

Dr. Turndorf grew up atheist with two atheist, born Jewish parents. She says she risked her reputation as a therapist to write this book. And talks about her Core Therapy sessions in healing that enables people to help mend old scars.

This is Jamie’s story. She knew as a young child coming from a dysfunct family that she wanted to be a psychologist to help people when she got older. She also promised Jean that she’d tell their story in hopes to help others with fears of dying, loving, and losing. Adding that, love never ends.

Dr. Turndorf aims to show the western world that grief isn’t – grieve, let go, move on, stating there is no timeline for grief. She unravels the societal norms and public journals that take the wrong generic approach to grief, and the stigmas attached to grief. So she created a new grief therapy method after Jean died, when she realized she could feel and hear his presence after he passed, to help the bereaved reconnect instead of saying goodbye to a loved one. She discusses the fact that the medical profession is always so ready to give someone a pill for everything, and shares her opinions on not drowning out the grief but living through the pain to move forward with grief. As a griever myself, I don’t agree with all of this because there are just days when it’s good for my sanity to medicate. Every grief is unique and requires different methods for the rough days.

This is a beautifully moving telling story about how love never dies and the earthly story of a great love and the capturing of that love in spiritual form.

With that all said, I have to mention that the author speaks a lot later in the book about her husband’s spirit and moments that were witnessed by others. I’m an empath and clairscentient, so I am familiar with spirit. But for those who are a bit skeptical, you may not appreciate the stories.

This book would appeal to anyone with an open mind and curiosity for what comes after death, and to anyone who has loved and lost.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – Health and Safety – Safety Awareness Travel – Part 1 by D.G. Kaye | Smorgasbord Blog Magazine

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – Health and Safety – Safety Awareness Travel – Part 1 by D.G. Kaye

Today I’m sharing my recent post on Safety Awareness, Part 1 on travel safety, I recently posted at Sally Cronin’s Smorgasbord Blog Magazine.

Welcome back to my latest post in my Safety and Awareness series.

In this episode I’m going to offer up a few handy tips to keep in mind when traveling, as well as when out and about in daily living, and in crowded places. I’ll touch on things like using the right purse and travel bags, and in Part 2, more about hotel and passport safety, and bank machines.

Today I’m going to start with Part 1 and the essential travel bags and gear for travel security.

Safety and Awareness

Vacations are great, it’s just the ‘getting there’ part makes traveling no joy. Gone are the days of mindless packing and carefree travel. Nowadays, we have to pack strategically for safety and security. I’ve traveled a lot and surely hope to continue doing so, but my protocols and equipment have changed through the rules and times of travel.

We’re no longer living in the era of traveling with a huge purse hanging off our shoulders – or we shouldn’t be. Tourist destinations are laden with pickpockets, and they are quite professional these days, no surprise why there are so many safety products available to keep up with current events and deterrents in the world. With the plentiful scams and methods of thievery around, it’s essential we pack with awareness.

suitcase packing

I’ll begin with luggage that makes for easier travel. There are all types of luggage styles and sizes available, a matter of personal choice. But there are some things to keep in mind when selecting. Depending on the length of trip and where, will help determine the size of bag you wish to carry. Many people nowadays travel with just a carryon bag so they don’t have to wait for baggage and hope theirs show up. I admire those people, sadly, I just can’t travel that minimum. Also, take into consideration the type of flight you booked and what is allowable for that fare. After all that, just make sure any bags you’re checking have locks on them – TSA locks specifically and are airline size allowance compatible.

Some may think locks are easy to break and a waste of time. But it has been proven that when thieves are working fast in airports, they don’t have time to fumble with locks and will move on to another bag without a lock, so they are a good deterrent. TSA can open these locks if they feel the urge to snoop, but they also close them back up – tender mercies. If you’re going to check a bag and have a carryon, make sure it’s one you can roll comfortably along with your checked bag when exiting the destination airport, or one that has a back sleeve so it can slide over the handle of your larger bag. If it’s too much you can opt for wearing a backpack instead. Remember, it’s worn on the back, so make sure that bag has RFID protection and lockable zippers to protect because we don’t have eyes behind us to keep an eye out when in crowded places. Alternatively, you can have RFID protected passport covers and wallets and/or purses to protect from personal information being stolen electronically.

I’m sharing some of my own travel RFID items here:

I finally found the perfect travel purse bag – especially for someone like me who has no trouble filling a big bag, but this bag that I found isn’t sexy or stylish, but is so comfortable and has several RFID pockets for wallets, phone, travel documents, even for a 10 inch Ipad or tablet, and more! It can be worn front or back and fits nicely under a jacket as it lies flat. I’ve now used this bag for two trips and love it, mostly for all it holds and comfort, but because I can easily slide it to my back, put on my jacket, board a plane with my carryon and personal bag allowance, without anyone knowing I also am wearing another bag. Most bags that are RFID also have ‘uncuttable’ straps, another safety feature against the grab-and-run criminals.

My new fav travel bag fits snugly on me, and I can move to any position that feels comfortable, it remains slim which makes it ideal for wearing under a jacket. The whole bag is RFID and waterproof! Two deep zippered pockets in front, a long pocket at top and another deep pocket at side zipper. I love it!

Above is my Ogon Swiss RFID aluminum travel wallet with passport holder and more! It has ten credit card slots, a passport pocket, a small change purse and another pocket to stuff a few bills in.

This is my daily new credit card wallet by Ogon. It’s compact, handy, and RFID safe. These products come in many colors and patterns. Ogon is a Swedish brand that makes some awesome aluminum RFID wallet alternatives. I was introduced to this product by a friend and now have a new travel wallet replacement that hold my cards and passport all in one, and easy access.

Radio Frequency Identification. Radio waves can read our data remotely, such as off credit cards and passports. They don’t have to steal our credit card to steal the info off it if it isn’t protected. Many products are RFID protected now, from purses to wallets, to backpacks and luggage. You can even buy RFID credit card sleeves, they’re very inexpensive for good peace of mind. I have them on all my cards because my regular wallet isn’t RFID. And thieves aren’t only in vacation hotspots. They are everywhere.

These are my RFID card sleeves I use to protect my credit cards when not using an RFID wallet. Always. They come in a ton of styles and colors, depending where you buy them from. These are from my bank.

There are also vests and hoodies available for people who don’t wish to carry anything. All pockets on these items are RFID compliant. One popular vest is the Scotty Vest, and not cheap. But there are various types available on Amazon that do the same job and are much cheaper. . . please hop over to Sally’s blog to read the conclusion – there’s one more helpful tip there for safe travel.

Sunday Book Review – Best Seller by Terry Tyler

My Sunday Book Review is for a book that seemed to have fallen down in my Kindle until I noticed Terry Tyler putting the book on sale and immediately pushed it back up the reader. Best Seller is a book about three different authors and how their lives entwined – not in a good way.

Three women, one dream: to become a successful author.

Eden Taylor has made it—big time. A twenty-three year old with model girl looks and a book deal with a major publisher, she’s outselling the established names in her field and is fast becoming the darling of the media.

Becky Hunter has money problems. Can she earn enough from her light-hearted romance novels to counteract boyfriend Alex’s extravagant spending habits, before their rocky world collapses?

Hard up factory worker Jan Chilver sees writing as an escape from her troubled, lonely life. She is offered a lifeline—but fails to read the small print…

In the competitive world of publishing, success can be merely a matter of who you know—and how ruthless you are prepared to be to get to the top.

Tyler never disappoints. Her well drawn characters and storylines always keep me turning the pages. And this book was no different. A story about three different authors, and how their worlds became entwined.

Becky, Jan, and Eden all belong to a writers group – North Norfolk Novelists. They are independent authors. Jan is very aloof, works hard, can’t get ahead in life, but has great talent as a writer. Becky befriends Jan and becomes a huge part in Jan’s life, while Becky’s own romance books drown on the Amazon lists. Becky, full of compassion for others, has a serious lack of self-esteem, demonstrated by her being a doormat for her boyfriend Alex. Eden reminds me of a Barbie with her model looks, and is daddy’s girl to a very mean, successful, scumbag father whose heritage relates to a London crime family. Eden has no great gift for writing, yet, Eden gathers all the fame for her hot trilogy promoted to the max by her father, and snatched up by a big publisher.

I’m having a difficult time explaining the plot because it would spoil the read. Suffice it to say, circumstances occur which thread these three women into the plot. Becky lives with her boyfriend Alex, to me, a very unlikeable character, who seems to enjoy spending money – Becky’s money. Jan has come from foster homes and has never had a break in her life, and something terrible happens to her that sets her off the edge. But the story really heats up after a tragedy happens that Becky has been pulled into, and makes it her mission to unravel it all publicly. And still, another huge twist comes after Becky herself gets put in the hot seat.

This book kept me turning the pages and I finished reading in two sittings. The storyline encompasses a fine line between friendships and relationships, and touches on issues of betrayal, blackmail, body-shaming, and depression. It also gives a good glimpse into what writers must put up within the publishing industry.
