What's new in version 4.4.2

Version 4.4.2 introduces native editing for BibTeX and RIS files as sheets, accompanied by a new bibliography template and extended AppleScript support for sheet sources. Academic workflows benefit further from expanded ISBN and DOI lookups, including support for German library catalogs and direct arXiv downloads. Tag autocompletion displays hierarchical paths, making it easier to distinguish nested tags.

For users of the Pro edition, this version brings updated AI models including Mistral Large 4, Claude Haiku 5.5, GPT Sol 6.1, Gemini 4 Argon, and Google Nano Banana 2.1, alongside improved LM Studio integration. Additional enhancements include refined prompt usage management, improved Markdown editing, and overall improved reliability.

NEW
  • You can edit BibTeX (.bib) files as DEVONthink sheets, with TeX accents, macros, and name lists displaying as readable text. When saving, DEVONthink preserves comments, @string definitions, and untouched entries.
  • RIS (.ris) files open as editable sheets.
  • A new Education > Bibliography template creates a BibTeX file, populated with common fields as columns.
  • We added a sheet source AppleScript record property that returns the file content of a sheet. It supports tab-separated or comma-separated content, BibTeX, or RIS formats, and rejects unreadable bibliographic entries.
Improved
  • Indenting and outdenting list items in Markdown documents preserves the cursor position in the text.
  • In Markdown lists, DEVONthink aligns wrapped text in nested list items as one block instead of aligning with the item's marker, e.g., a bullet.
  • Shifting paragraph text in WYSIWYG Markdown mode retains the selection and cursor position and also skips over entire tables.
  • The Tools > Markdown > Delete Row command and Editing bar button remove all selected rows in a Markdown table.
  • Using ⌥↩ in table cells of Markdown documents inserts proper line breaks in WYSIWYG mode.
  • For HTML-based pages, including formatted notes and web archives, DEVONthink looks first for a DOI in the page's metadata instead of in the content.
  • Reader view and web-clipped Markdown no longer display empty code blocks where they should show code dynamically loaded while scrolling.
  • Tag autocompletion displays nested tags with their path, which helps distinguish identically named tags. Additionally, typing an existing tag followed by / lists its child tags, if any exist.
  • We repositioned the Help assistant's buttons for visual consistency.
  • If your maintenance period has elapsed, instead of linking to your customer account, DEVONthink > Check for Updates offers the last version that you are eligible to download and use.
  • When a publisher's PDF cannot be downloaded, the download PDF from DOI AppleScript command and download_pdf_from_doi MCP tool (Pro only) try every open-access copy listed by Unpaywall or CrossRef.
  • The resolve DOI metadata and download PDF from DOI AppleScript commands, as well as the resolve_doi_metadata and download_pdf_from_doi MCP tools (Pro only), resolve DOIs registered outside CrossRef, such as DataCite for arXiv and Zenodo, mEDRA, and JaLC, download arXiv's own PDF for an arXiv DOI, and accept a variety of DOI formats.
  • The resolve book metadata AppleScript command and resolve_book_metadata MCP tool (Pro only) look up ISBNs in the K10plus and German National Library catalogs before Open Library, returning the exact edition, especially for German and European academic books. Catalog matches from the MCP tool include the place of publication, edition, and record ID, and identify their source as k10plus or dnb.
  • The create record with AppleScript command and create_record MCP tool (Pro only) using type sheet and a name ending in .bib or .ris create a BibTeX or RIS document instead of a DEVONthink sheet. DEVONthink preserves valid BibTeX or RIS text exactly as written while converting delimited text (tab, comma, or semicolon) into entries.
  • The mark AppleScript command and mark_record_text MCP tool (Pro only) create one annotation per occurrence that spans several lines so annotation summaries quote it once. They also take an optional comment parameter that PDF documents get on the first occurrence of each term. If that occurrence is already marked, DEVONthink adds the comment to its note as a new paragraph.
Improved (Pro)
  • Setting the AI > Chat > Usage settings option to Auto keeps the content sent to the LLM below the prompt length at which the provider charges higher rates. Currently, this only works with Claude Haiku 5.5.
  • Estimated costs for Claude Sonnet shown in the AI > Chat settings reflect half its price for cached input.
  • The resolve_doi_metadata, download_pdf_from_doi, and resolve_book_metadata MCP tools write exactly the same custom metadata as DEVONthink's AppleScript commands.
  • The resolve_doi_metadata MCP tool no longer reports a citation file (.bib) as pdf_url, and its pdf_note explains why there is no open-access PDF, e.g., if Unpaywall refused the contact email. In addition, download_pdf_from_doi reports every failed attempt.
  • We updated GPT 6 Sol to version 6.1, both via OpenAI and OpenRouter.
  • Claude Haiku is now at version 5.5, via Anthropic and OpenRouter, offering 1 million input tokens and 128,000 output tokens, a knowledge cutoff of June 2026, and adaptive thinking.
  • Mistral Large 4 replaces Mistral Large 3, via Mistral and OpenRouter. It supports thinking and, via Mistral's API, offers a context window of 1 million input tokens and 64,000 output tokens. This model is also accessible in the Script assistant.
  • We updated Gemini 3.1 Pro (Preview) to Gemini 4 Argon, both via Google and OpenRouter. The knowledge cutoff date is March 2026.
  • All of Meta's Muse models (Glimmer, Spark, and Wonder) support MCP tools and skills via OpenRouter.
  • In the AI > Chat > Models pop-up, LM Studio models show their reported names, and an already loaded model uses the context length it was loaded with. DEVONthink detects vision, tool, and reasoning support via LM Studio's current API. Requires LM Studio 0.4.8 or later.
  • When the AI > Chat > Usage pop-up is set to Auto, Ollama models supporting thinking levels think at medium depth when a chat uses tools.
  • Google's Nano Banana 2 uses Nano Banana 2.1, which improves image quality, more closely follows the prompt, and renders text better, all at the same speed and cost.
Fixed
  • In the syntax-colorized or WYSIWYG view of Markdown documents, all links used the system blue instead of the current theme's link color, impairing readability in darker color schemes. Fixed.
  • Links, images, equations, and horizontal rules retained their rendered appearance in WYSIWYG view, even if edits changed their context, e.g., moving a horizontal rule below a line of text turns that text into a heading, so the rule should vanish. Fixed.
  • In WYSIWYG Markdown, indenting and outdenting a list item, shifting lines of text, applying Format > List, or splitting the document turned links into plain text and could move the cursor within the text or to the next list item. Fixed.
  • In Markdown, manually changing a number in a numbered list wasn't possible. Fixed.
  • Deleting the first item in a numbered Markdown list didn't renumber the following items. Fixed.
  • Shifting lines up and down in a numbered list in Markdown continually increased the numbering. Fixed.
  • Shifting the first item of a numbered Markdown list up, e.g., past a table or a heading, renumbered the rest of the list based on its old second number instead of the list's first number. Fixed.
  • Shifting the last line of a Markdown document merged it with the line above. Fixed.
  • Text typed before an equation or link at the start of a line or in a table cell in a Markdown document could be lost or incorrectly merged into the link. Fixed.
  • Clicking a link or equation in a rendered Markdown table displayed the raw source of the entire table with the cursor in the header, which could corrupt the table and disable related commands. Fixed.
  • Pressing ⌥↩ in a Markdown table cell split off a separate table instead of adding a line break to the cell. Fixed.
  • Pressing ↩ below or in the last row of a table at the end of a Markdown document incorrectly added a new table row instead of creating a new line. Fixed.
  • In a Markdown document with a table as its last element, text typed at the end appeared outside the table instead of in the last table cell. Fixed.
  • Pressing ↩ in the last row of a WYSIWYG Markdown table could add a stray empty table cell after undoing a deletion below it. Fixed.
  • Deleting a line break after a WYSIWYG Markdown table wasn't saved. Fixed.
  • A paragraph following a Markdown table became an extra table row when it contained a pipe (|) character, affecting the editor, preview, and exports. Fixed.
  • Pressing ↩ immediately after a rendered Markdown link could split the link. Fixed.
  • Pressing ⌦ at the start of a line below a Markdown table or at the end of its last cell showed the line in the table cell in WYSIWYG view but saved it below the table. Fixed.
  • Markdown documents using right-to-left writing direction, e.g., Arabic or Hebrew text, opened with a left-to-right direction when the number of links outweighed the rest of the text. The writing direction only considers the visible text in the document. Fixed.
  • Inline Markdown footnotes written as a single word or a number, e.g., [^note] without a matching definition, appeared as a superscript "0" in the preview. Fixed.
  • Converting or exporting Markdown documents to rich text, Word, LaTeX, or plain text removed line breaks in table cells. Fixed.
  • Clipping certain web pages as formatted notes with clutter-free processing disabled, e.g., articles from Heise, could stall for several minutes while page scripts ran. Fixed.
  • Clipping a web page that couldn't be loaded or returned an error with no content, e.g., 404, incorrectly created an empty web archive instead of a bookmark. Fixed.
  • Titles, authors, and descriptions extracted from web page metadata could display unescaped HTML entities, e.g., & or ß, in web clippings and Reader view. Fixed.
  • Viewing bookmarks for certain sites, e.g., X or LinkedIn, showed the page for a moment, then switched to an error message. Fixed.
  • Sheets created from comma-separated or semicolon-separated text, e.g., via AppleScript or the MCP server, replaced commas and semicolons inside quoted cells with spaces. Fixed.
  • Windows positioned almost entirely off-screen, e.g., by a window tiling application, could jump back on screen even when you didn't interact with the window, e.g., when the display's brightness changed. Fixed.
  • In widescreen view, the separator between the item list and view/edit pane moved to the left when the window narrowed, e.g., after being moved to a smaller display, and didn't go back to the previous position when the window widened again. Fixed.
  • The Buy Now button in the title bar could still appear even after the license was entered or verified. Fixed.
  • The Help viewer could be opened only once per launch. Fixed.
  • While viewing a smart group, editing date-based custom metadata in the Info inspector that removed the selected item from the results could crash DEVONthink. Fixed.
  • Links were lost after copying text from a Markdown document in WYSIWYG mode and creating a new document via Data > New > With Clipboard. Fixed.
  • When creating a new group in the Sorter, clicking the OK button closed the Sorter on macOS 27 Golden Gate. Fixed.
  • If Settings > General > Appearance > Show filename extensions was enabled, Settings > WikiLinks > Update name of WikiLinks in square brackets automatically didn't update WikiLinks, section links, aliases, or transclusions that didn't include the extension in the link text. Fixed.
  • Renaming an item didn't update the WikiLinks pointing to a section of it or with an alias that included the filename extension, e.g., [[Name.md#Section]] or [[Name.md|Alias]], if filename extensions were hidden in the settings. Fixed.
  • Renaming an item could break its WikiLinks if the new name included the filename extension or the extension of the linked document changed, yielding, e.g., [[Name.md.md]]. Fixed.
  • WikiLinks updated after renaming an item kept additional spaces in the new name and were also updated even if the new name wasn't accepted, e.g., a name consisting only of the extension. Fixed.
  • Viewing a missing indexed file could update the item automatically and remove the reference from the database. Fixed.
  • Dates entered as text rather than chosen with a date picker were often parsed incorrectly or failed to be recognized, e.g., 24102013, 19991231, 24.10.13 09:15, 1.10.13, or 10/24/2013 09:15:30. ISO 8601 dates ignored time zones, and impossible dates like 31.02.2013 rolled into the next month. Now a year or month without a day, like 2017 or 2013-08, resolves to the first day. Fixed.
  • Overdue smart rules could cause high CPU usage. Fixed.
  • Scheduled smart rules, e.g., using the Hourly or Daily event triggers, were postponed by every sync, quit, and launch, so they could potentially never run. Fixed.
  • For doi.org addresses, the download JSON from AppleScript command returned a web page instead of a citation; only dx.doi.org worked. Fixed.
  • The resolve book metadata AppleScript command and resolve_book_metadata MCP tool (Pro only) mixed up the publisher, date, and ISBN details of multiple editions when a search of Open Library returned no authors. Fixed.
  • The AppleScript geolocation property didn't work with a whose clause. Fixed.
Fixed (Pro)
  • Imprinting some PDF documents incorrectly used the MediaBox instead of the CropBox, which could expose hidden items like printer's marks. Fixed.
  • The higher rates of long prompts were ignored, and so the estimated costs for GPT and Gemini 3.1 Pro were too low in the AI > Chat settings. Fixed.
  • In the Chat assistant, sending a new prompt replaced one already in progress. Fixed.
  • Chat queries about heavily annotated files, e.g., PDF documents, could exceed the context window of AI models without tool support, such as Apple's Foundation models, since DEVONthink sent unlimited annotations. Fixed.
  • The Chat assistant automatically scrolled down to its latest status update or reply instead of keeping your current position in the conversation. Fixed.
  • When given a specific tag to remove, the set_record_tags MCP tool incorrectly removed other tags with varying capitalization, e.g., given Apple, it removed apple too. Fixed.
  • The search_records MCP tool always sorted by image dimensions instead of file size. Fixed.
  • The search_records MCP tool listed the lowest values for the rating, label, word count, character count, and size, although the documentation specified the highest values. Fixed.
  • When processing multiple records, the extract_record_highlights and extract_record_mentions MCP tools didn't indicate from which record each highlight or mention originated. Fixed.
  • The download_pdf_from_doi MCP tool reported an unknown destination only after downloading the PDF. Fixed.
  • DOIs containing <, >, or # corrupted the record's URL, the publisher_url from MCP tools, and link-based custom metadata, preventing a record from being resolved again. Fixed.
  • The Research Canvas MCP application truncated DOIs containing parentheses, e.g., The Lancet's format 10.1016/S0140-6736(YY)XXXXX-X. Fixed.
  • The resolve_doi_metadata, download_pdf_from_doi, and search_crossref MCP tools, as well as the resolve DOI metadata AppleScript command, omitted subtitles from paper titles and organizations from author lists, and used the DOI registration date as the publication date when none was known. Fixed.
  • Scripts written by the Script assistant that call summarize text with the as text summary parameter failed to compile because the assistant's script cleanup changed the parameter to as string summary. Fixed.
  • The Codex Desktop & CLI option in the AI > MCP settings was disabled due to changes to the ChatGPT application. Fixed.
  • When Gemini 3 models returned an error, e.g., an invalid API key, an exceeded quota, or overloaded servers, DEVONthink could crash. Fixed.
  • LM Studio received reasoning settings a model didn't support. Fixed.
Removed (Pro)
  • We removed Nvidia Switchyard, Nemotron 3.5 Content Safety, and Gemini Nano Banana 2.1 from the models available via OpenRouter.

So, DevonThink Pro is on version 4, but DevonThink To Go (iOS) is only on version 3? Is there feature parity between them?

You do have to be very careful what you put in there, especially complete website archives etc.. Could destroy your database (am in the process of grieving loss of over 10GB of years of archiving, won't be recuperable in any way since DTP dispatches its files in very complex ways, destroying the original structure integrity of the original hierarchy, unless using export functions.. which of course cannot be done at this point since database cannot be open. All I have access to viewing the content of the archive in Finder.. and the mess that is in there). I wonder more and more how useful this, in many ways Finder is much much less risky for organizing. Definitely not all the bells and whistles but since we're tributary to Spotlight in any case.. I used to rave about this app, not so sure anymore. I'd almost say.. stick to the Finder.. it can do all sorts of organizational tricks much less risky.

A great tool for those who need it (not for those who complain but clearly bought the wrong tool). Rock solid, well thought out. But you have to read at least part of the manual, if is not completely obvious what can and cannot be done. When SpotLight is not up to your tasks anymore, have a look at DTPro and be prepared to invest some time to learn, you will be rewarded :)

I've used DEVONthink since it was 2.x. I departed from it for a while, but I'm back and loving its usefulness. It's quite handy to use with iOS devices where Files.app is quite limited. I tried to do everything with just plain text files and folders, but I finally broke down and admitted it was a foolish idea after all. DEVONthink works quite well for capturing all kinds of info with minimum friction and maintain it in a searchable and usable way. Now that I have tried the overly-simplistic method, I can't emphasize enough how useful DEVONthink really is.
