Dying Amiga demoscene

Hello. I've been looking, that in last years, Amiga is a little bit dying on the demoscene. Why is it that? I don't really understand why, no-one is making prods for Amiga these years. I would like anyone to join this Conversation to help me understand this. Thank you! <3

Hasn't it always been like this? Some have focused on making productions on other consoles and machines to test the limits of these other exciting platforms :)

Personally, I'm in the final stages of a small PC Demo (my first PC demo) written in Go Lang. I also have a small Amiga intro and music disc that was more or less finished coding in 2017/2018, but it's missing content like music and gfx atm + I want to rewrite them a bit as it's some weird code of my (little knowledge of assembler), but with family, work and everything else, I unfortunately don't have much spare time to finish many of my projects. I think this applies to many of us grumpy old people ;)

no-one is making prods for Amiga these years, I dont agree with that! But many old school sceners just don't have the time, even if they want to make a Amiga demos/intros, many have children to take care of and a full time job, for example.

And In my opinion the Amiga scene is alive and kicking! and not dying, not yet.

I pretty much have seen, that in 2026, yet no big demo was released for Amiga 500. But I'm in the demoscene just for a year :D

i beg to differ:

it's from 2026, and it's one of the best A500 demos ever:

also, from 2026, and one of the most outstanding amiga prods since a while: https://demozoo.org/productions/388334/

Yes, I have tried to do a demo in 2026 for OCS too, it was coded directly on my Amiga using the AsmSkool technique. It was a nice refresher of the codings :D. I really like how the Amiga hardware is very efficient, and can make every step and effect by your preferences. Also, there are is a nice graphics chip (Agnus), that can make the demo even more professional looking and wholesome. Greetz to all Amiga sceners <3

Keygenism here. I am also a fan of Amiga as well, especially when I compose music in the .mod format... despite me born and living in America where that computer hardly exists due to price. Nowadays, I do get Smaugur's point. Not many people are making Amiga demos compared to the 90s when they are young just like me (I am 22), but that doesn't mean the Amiga community is over, there's still demos from time to time

I too, tend to shift away from composing .mod music but not entirely. It's still in my heart to reminisce what I've experienced even though I'm past their generation.

The Amiga still lives on no matter what. :)

Don't forget Rubbur ( https://demozoo.org/productions/384810/ ) and the amazing NoCPU stuff like Bring it Back ( https://demozoo.org/productions/385539/ ). There have been only a few parties in 2026 so far, so there's probably more to come (Revision, 68k Inside, etc.). But making big demos takes time and you can't expect that every year for every demo group. 2025 wasn't that bad either.

One recommendation, Kast601, you probably should be releasing your intros at a party (preferably with you attending ;) but remote is also okay) instead just outside, if you want to get a bit more attention for your work. Keep it up!

> Amiga is a little bit dying on the demoscene.

To quote Fight Club: "In the Tibetan philosophy, Sylvia Plath sense of the word, we're all dying." The Amiga 500 scene, however, is currently in quite a revival. The Amiga 500 was basically dead and gone between, say, 1997 and 2012, seeing only sporadic releases and no real competition. Since 2012, a revival is in full swing. Last year, for example, we had the peak of a rotozoomer battle between Loonies, Batman Group, Lemon and Desire. Four great groups pushing the limits and each other to new heights.

> in 2026, yet no big demo was released for Amiga 500.

As others have pointed out, Bacon of Hope was released at GERP this year and it's massive! Keep in mind that 2026 is still young. The traditional party for "big" Amiga releases is usually Revision, coming up during easter. But I wouldn't count the big party releases as the best measure of a vibrant scene, necessarily. It's the stuff that happens in between that keeps people motivated and creative. We're now seeing "out of party" releases, packdisks, diskmags, tools etc. sprinkled between parties.

I'm counting 26 OCS demo/intro releases on Pouët so far this year. Compare that to a grand total of 24 releases for all of 2010.

Gerp and Revision gave alot of great Amiga productions! Great start of the 2026 year 8)

havoc - 17:55 26 April 2026 #

so is it dead yet?

Smaugur - 22:27 29 April 2026 #

No havoc, Amiga is alive and kicking! Amiga Rulez the scene as always! Amigaaaaaaah!!

To paraphrase an old saying about Rock and roll: "the (Amiga) demo scene is not dead - it just smells that way".

Most of us that used our Amigas are in the age bracket of 40-60 years of age. Few people younger than that have any relation with the Amiga to speak of. We may be the last enthuiasts for that particular brand and make of computer. It stands to reason that all eras have their dawn, day in the sun and sunset. And after their will be no flood of sin. There will be something else, that the next generation will obsess about. Maybe it will be the Ipad, the early era of predictive AI or ... why not... the Tesla will be seen as that which the geeks of the future will venerate. Has it always been this way? Yes, I think it has.

The previous generations loved their Märklin train sets, their porcelain dolls and maybe some sort of weird cooking implements from the 20s.

Here are my thoughts about this topic and why we feel the need to look back 20 years to our Amigas and Ataris and why that will not last:

Here is the transcript from the Podcast if you rather read:

"So it's Trigger again and Lumali's revenge. dear Lumali who hurt you? I don't know but revenge is due obviously.

So when we're wrapping this thing up isn't it kind of amazing to think about the fact that we always seem to be retro nerds if you want to 20 years back in time or maybe 30 somewhere around there. In the 50s there was a very very strong retro wave towards the 20s. The roaring 20s were popular. I know this is kind of fun because roaring 20s are popular again. Why not? I mean we have a pandemic, we have an economy heading for a crash and a lot of good music. So I don't know.

But still it is pretty clear that this retrothing with Amigas, C64s and Ataris and Sinclair Spectrums and stuff. That is a wave we're surfing on. A few years from now I don't think we will be caring too much about it. I hope we will but I cannot guarantee it. And then maybe the next generation will look into our time and be really really retro nostalgic about iPads, mobile phones, smartphones and whatever TikTok is because I have no idea.I'm too old for that. anyway, so I hope you like this one and we really like to spread this retro feeling to whoever is listening."

... More thoughts from your's truly:

"Polar Chase, Fleshbrain of the Crusaders. It's some kind of Bond fight going on there, it feels like something that could accompany a Bond movie. And that's retro too isn't it? We kinda look back into a really big, like you know, knowledge base of cool stuff that has been, and we don't seem to be able to leave it. If you just think about it, what's up from now with the movies? It's all aboutthose superheroes that were all started somewhere in the golden age of animation and comics during 30s and 40s and well it continued through the silver era into today and it makes me wonder a bit why we could become this nostalgic. A friend of mine he has a number of those Star Wars figures that he bought when he was a kid. His own kids are playing around with them now and I think why are we collecting this?I can't really say. But it is what it is. And it seems like the industry like this kinda retro thing because it's guaranteed to be a success. The whole Marvel Universe thing seems to be one string of a movie success after another one. We can't get enough of them. Think about it, over 20 movies done today. To this day.and they are all more or less guaranteed cash cows and total successes. Now, there is something to retro, isn't it?"

... And also, is this thing a man's hobby? The women says "yes".

"Jeremy of Replicas in the Nick of Time spoke to my mother a few months ago and she said about this retro thing. It's a guy thing. It's a thing that only men do. That's what she said actually and I think, huh, okay? But it seems to be some kind of logic with it because if you just think about your average retro whatever like vinyl recordscassette tapes, Amigas, Ataris and whatever retro stuff you could be into, like replica guns or something. Well, there are very few women there. And that is a thing. I also spoke with a colleague and she said like, yeah, she felt the same way. She wouldn't really understand what's in this retro thing at all. I don't know why this is or if it is that.way at all, but seems to be something to it. It's a bit sad actually, I would like it very much more if more women were into stuff like this. The Amiga is kinda a female name isn't it? It means a female friend. Basically, so why not?"

stripecat - 20:11 2 June 2026 #

My point that the scene may not be dying, but when we go, we take our Amigas, Spectrums, Ataris and C64s with us.

The rest may get to keep their OpenAIs, ChatGPTs and AI-enabled copies of Windows 11. We certainly would not want to take them away from anyone :) They will be the treasured memories of generations to come.
