Rebuilding the journey from basic research to global champion

Info

The DEEP - Institute for Deep Tech Innovation is the newest addition to ESMT's institute landscape. Started in September 2022, it focuses on the deep tech value chain and intends to overhaul it through educating & enabling all actors involved. The goal: change the way deep tech is coming to life, so rebuilding the entire path from basic research to a thriving venture, a global champion even, by sustainably instilling entrepreneurial thinking & acting in the scientific sphere and beyond. So what is it exactly that we do? Cross Reference: incubator, accelerator, company builder, entrepreneurship center, entrepreneurship academy, tech transfer office, venture capital fund, venture lab - We focus on verticals, which a) have high impact on people, planet, and profit; b) are predestined for deep tech solutions, and c) leverage the strengths of the European ecosystem. For a start, we are zeroing in on VERTICAL #1: LIFE SCIENCES, soon exploring further verticals to follow up on. - We tailor to the individual need by looking at vertical-specific challenges. This way we (co-)design measures intended to overcome particular hurdles on the journey from basic research to global champion. Meaning: - We offer entrepreneurship education for future entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers and leaders in scientific organizations. - We support start-up creation and acceleration by working closely with entrepreneurs, scientists, research organizations and their tech transfer offices to commercialize IP and build deep tech companies - We foster environments and support infrastructure solutions that are conducive for tech transfer projects and deep tech scale-ups. - We rethink and redo entrepreneurial financing mechanisms. What this looks like, well, stay tuned. - We draw on scientific insights from the Joachim Faber Chair of Technology and Innovation and the Center for Decisions, Models, and Data, which back up and provide guiding evidence for DEEP's portfolio.

Germany does not lack research excellence. It does not lack ambition. But: ➡️ Technology transfer negotiations take too long. ➡️ Deal structures become too complex. ➡️ Terms can make otherwise promising companies difficult to finance before they have even reached the market. That is why the German Spin-off Framework (GSOF) was developed. 👇 The GSOF brings together the communities that need to be aligned if research is to become a company: research organizations, technology transfer offices, founders, and investors. It is a practical reference point for growth-oriented, IP-based deep-tech spin-offs. Built on real transaction experience, it defines transparent landing zones for the topics that most often create friction: equity and virtual equity, royalties, upfront payments, milestones, patent costs. - Founders must stay incentivized for the long term. - Investors need terms that are genuinely investable. - Research organizations should participate fairly. And all parties should spend less time negotiating structure and more time building companies. Reflecting broad support across Germany's innovation ecosystem, more than 40 organizations, including DEEP - Institute for Deep Tech Innovation at ESMT Berlin, spanning venture capital, research, technology transfer, law, media, and the broader deep tech ecosystem have developed and endorsed the framework to date (see all the organizations in the comments). The GSOF is version 1.0. The dialogue will continue. Explore the key principles behind the GSOF below and learn more here: https://lnkd.in/enX7HztZ 👉 Download the framework here: https://lnkd.in/eQHA4yqv #deeptech #technology #innovation #venturecapital #entrepreneurship

"Deep tech is not a first-time founder game...!" If you want to increase your odds of commercialization, it becomes a team-building game. The newly released Global Deep Tech Report 2026 by HTGF | High-Tech Gründerfonds, DeepTech & Climate Fonds (DTCF), Bayern Kapital, D11Z. Ventures, ARQIS and Onsight Ventures, provides some of the strongest data I've seen yet on the relationship between founding team composition and venture outcomes. Its conclusion is remarkably aligned with what I've observed building DEEP Pioneers: The strongest predictor of deep-tech success is not technical excellence alone. It's complementary founding teams! Some findings that stood out: • The combination of management experience and engineering education is the strongest predictor of capital raised. • Deep-tech startups hit a ceiling when they lack management and commercial capability • Only 36% of European deep-tech founders have prior founding experience (vs 43% in North America) • Investors increasingly expect teams that combine research excellence with operational, customer, and scaling capabilities • Europe systematically underproduces “entrepreneurial executors” in deep tech One insight from the report captured it perfectly: “Exceptional technical talent combined with execution and commercial strategy is what translates breakthrough technology into scalable businesses.” Jasmin Güngör, GP at Onsight Ventures The report goes even further: It explicitly recommends that universities institutionalize cross-disciplinary co-founder matching between technical founders and operational talent. In other words, the bottleneck is not a lack of science. It's a lack of mechanisms that systematically bring the right people together. That’s exactly why we built DEEP Pioneers ESMT Berlin, DEEP - Institute for Deep Tech Innovation with the backing of Joachim Herz Stiftung. We proactively and systematically match breakthrough research teams with experienced entrepreneurs and operators, then coach them into becoming high-performing founding teams capable of building venture-scale companies. Because in deep tech, the bottleneck is rarely just the science. It’s whether the team can turn the science into a company. 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐰 for the next batch of DEEP Pioneers to take your research from lab to market- it is fully funded and highly selective. Deadline in a week- secure yourself a limited seat! Aus einer starken Forschungsidee wird nicht automatisch ein gründungsreifes Team. Genau hier setzt der Workshop von Ali A. und Tina Manker OLY auf der TA-Konferenz 2026 an: „From Research Team to Founding Team: Spinout Readiness in Practice“. 📍 TA-Konferenz 2026 | 18.–19. • What does it really take to turn breakthrough research into a venture?  A couple weeks ago, we brought together a group of researchers and serial entrepreneurs & operators for our DEEP Pioneers offsite.       Not a retreat, a place where ideas and people are fully explored.    Over 48 hours, we saw our participants engage in deep discussions about technologies and markets, as well as values and ways of working.  Because high-performing deep tech founding teams need both: a team grounded in strong relationships, aligned values, and clear communication, and a technology that meets the needs of its customers.  One of the biggest challenges for researchers on their way into entrepreneurship is finding the right person to become their co-founder, their partner, on the journey. In fact, only around 3% of researchers take this leap, precisely because it is difficult to do.  This is exactly where DEEP Pioneers comes in.  We match top-tier research and IP with experienced entrepreneurs & operators to build scalable teams, fast, early, and right.  What stood out during the offsite wasn’t the ideas alone, but the mindset:   -A willingness to engage deeply with uncertainty   -The openness to share unfinished work and ask a lot of questions   -And the commitment to build something impactful together  It’s not for everyone, and that’s intentional.  We work with a highly selective group of serial founders and entrepreneurial researchers who are serious about turning breakthrough technology into scalable ventures.  The next cohort is coming up. If you’re developing breakthrough research and want to explore its path to real-world impact, find the application link in the comments section. What’s been your experience navigating the gap between research and entrepreneurship? #teambuilding #deeptech #commercialisation
