The warning came early but nobody acted for weeks. ⏳ The disease was spreading. The question was whether anyone had realised early enough to stop it. Plantix detected a Tomato Leaf Curl Virus in Karnataka in weeks 13–14. The official government advisory followed at week 18. The timing matters because Tomato Leaf Curl Virus has no cure once a plant is infected. The real opportunity lies in controlling the whitefly before the virus spreads because once symptoms are visible, the damage is already done. Depending on when infection occurs, yield losses can range anywhere from 20% to nearly 100%. Independent field assessments from ICAR-IIHR later confirmed what the signal had shown: the virus had spread through more than half the crop in Kolar's villages. The prices of tomatoes also rose 7-fold. A commodity pricing company confessed their people on the ground did not manage to predict the price rises. For organisations working across agriculture, this is where field intelligence becomes valuable. Earlier visibility creates more time to understand where pressure is building, prioritise regions, plan field engagement and align commercial decisions while interventions can still influence outcomes. This is just an example of what becomes possible when millions of AI validated field observations are viewed as a connected intelligence network in real-time rather than surveys collected past the event . Because in agriculture, information is only as useful as the time left to act on it. Arrive too late, and even the right diagnosis can't change the outcome. Every algorithm was built toward one moment: a farmer standing in his field, looking at a crop he can finally protect. To close our anniversary series, we're handing the mic to Sandeep Shinde, a farmer from Pune. 💬 Before Plantix, what was your biggest fear walking out into your fields? "Before the app, we were completely dependent on the local agri shop. Every time a crop looked sick, I had to pluck a leaf, walk to the market, show it to the shopkeeper. They would guess it and whatever they said, you paid for and prayed it worked." 💬 Was there a moment you felt completely helpless? "When Leaf Curl Virus and Fall Armyworm hit, it was devastating. We tried every chemical available. Everyone prescribed their own medicine just to sell it. Nothing worked. Your hard work vanishes in front of your eyes, and you don't know who to trust." 💬 Do you remember the first time you used the app? "I was shocked. How could a phone know what was wrong? I actually called Ravindra Botve Sir just to confirm. It detected Red Rot on my sugarcane instantly. I bought exactly what it recommended. And that season, I harvested 100 tonnes from one acre. I realised: this is a top scientist, right in my pocket." 💬 What would you say to the team? "It has saved our water, our money, our harvests. Farmers like me feel very secure because of you. My only request… There are still farmers in remote villages who don't know this exists yet. Please reach them. This app saves livelihoods. Every farmer deserves it."

A farmer in Brazil pointed at his dying crop and said one thing: "Morte súbita." Simone Strey and Rob Strey had never heard those words. They pulled out their phones and searched. The results came back: car accidents. Morte súbita means sudden death in Portuguese. A local name every farmer in the region knew. A name that meant nothing to a search engine. And everything to the family whose harvest was dying in front of them. That gap – between what farmers know and what technology can understand – became Plantix. Ten years is a long time to hold onto a question. There were moments when the funding wasn't there. When the product wasn't ready. When the right decision wasn't obvious and the cost of being wrong was someone's harvest. They held on. Today, Plantix has more than 50 million downloads. But the number Rob comes back to isn't that one. "80% of our users report an improvement in their income and quality of life. That's the number. Not the downloads. The farmers." Simone reflects on what it took to get there: "We didn't build this alone. Not even close. Korbinian Hartberger, Alexander Förster, Bianca Kummer, Pierre Munzel, and Charlotte Schumann stood in those early trenches with us. And the teams in Germany and India who pour their expertise into this every single day. You can build the most revolutionary technology in the world, but if it sits quietly in an app store, it helps no one. To change global agriculture, the tech has to actually find the farmers. Meet Ali Chibli, "The amplifier," and Nikhil Vijay, "The multiplier." Ali figured out the process of how to reach farmers who didn't even know this technology existed. Nikhil took that spark and built the machine to scale it to millions of them. Together, they are the reason our technology found the people it was built for. Nikhil looks back at when they were staring at a completely blank slate: "I still remember the first time I introduced the app to a farmer. The expression on his face said everything. He was genuinely amazed that a phone could identify a crop disease in seconds. Something that usually cost him time, effort, and immense anxiety. For someone who wasn’t digital-first, it felt like pure magic." That single moment shaped their entire playbook. They threw away traditional corporate marketing concepts and focused entirely on local languages, expert faces, and authentic farmer testimonials. Ali adds: "Over time, that human approach allowed us to scale through a relentless engine of performance marketing, content built for fields instead of boardrooms. We teamed up with over 100+ influencers and created 400+ videos that generated more than 200 million organic views." Tracking Plantix as it climbed to the number one rank on the Play Store wasn't just exciting because of the numbers. It proved that a free product built to genuinely improve farmers' lives could achieve massive, global scale. Nikhil concludes: "If I had to sum up this journey in one line, it’s this: To grow Plantix, we first had to learn how to think like a farmer, speak like a farmer, and earn a farmer’s trust. Thousands of dying mango trees. A tribal farming community in South Gujarat losing hope. And one agronomist who refused to walk away. That man is Ravindra B. Bot, our Lead Agronomist, known to farmers across India as Dr. Green. As Plantix marks a decade of impact, we sat down with the person who ensures our technology never loses touch with the soil it was built to serve. 💬 Q: Ravi, how did you earn the name "Dr. Green"? 👨🌾Ravi: "Dr. Green" was a gift from farmers. Early in my career I worked in South Gujarat. Mango orchards, hundreds of trees, they were dying one by one. Termites, stem borers, wilt disease... These farmers had grown those trees for generations. Their whole livelihood was sitting in those orchards. We worked together. Many seasons and slowly, slowly… The orchards turned green again. And then one old farmer, he looked at me and said, "Bhai, you are like a doctor for our trees." After that, village to village, people started calling me Dr. Green. That name became my purpose. It means keeping plants healthy, soils alive, and helping farmers build a better future, without taking from the earth more than we give back. It means keeping the plants healthy, keeping the soil alive, and making sure the farmer's future is better than his father's. 💬 Q: How do you convince a farmer who has trusted his grandfather's methods for 40 years to trust an algorithm? 👨🌾Ravi: I tell him, "Bhau, it's very good that you trust me. But tell me, can I be in your village every day? Can I be in 10,000 villages at the same time?" He laughs. He knows the answer. Then I say, "Plantix is like keeping me in your pocket. Not just me but thousands of scientists and experts from all over the world. All of us, together, on your phone." But honestly, all this talking does only so much. What actually works is showing. We take out the phone. We take a photo of the sick plant, right there, standing in his field. We see the diagnosis. We follow what it says. And then, maybe two weeks later, three weeks later, the crop recovers. That is when everything changes. He doesn't look at the phone the same way after that. It's not a gadget anymore. It's his tool. 💬 Q: When you look back at a decade of this work, what makes you most proud? 👨🌾 Ravi: I will tell you about one farmer. Mr. Nilesh Dighe, from Dawadi village near Pune. Fall Armyworm had hit the maize fields. Farmers didn't know what they were looking at. They were spending money on the wrong things. Every day the damage was getting worse. Nilesh found Plantix on Facebook. He took photos. The app identified it correctly and gave him the right advice. He followed it. A few weeks later, he came to me and said, "Sir, I thought I would lose my entire crop. You saved my harvest and saved me from spending thousands of rupees on the wrong products." But what touched me most. After harvest, he called again to say thank you. The yield was better than he expected. The income helped his family.

How much testing does it take before an AI recommendation reaches a farmer? That question shaped much of our collaboration with ICRISAT, one of the world's leading dryland agriculture research institutes. Working together meant putting Plantix through rigorous scientific evaluation under real field conditions, across real crops and real disease pressure. One evaluation alone examined more than 8,500 field images, spanning 25 crops and 250 crop problems. Every prediction was reviewed, edge cases were investigated and the results were analysed to understand both where the technology performed reliably and where it could still improve. Across this evaluation, Plantix correctly identified 97% of diseases, either directly or by including the correct diagnosis among its top recommendations. The result was more than an accuracy score. It demonstrated that the technology had been tested against the complexity of real agriculture, not just controlled conditions. Timothe Jäger – Timo joined Plantix as a student in 2017 with no grand plan and a habit of picking up whatever needed doing. The community backend needed someone. He built it. The infrastructure needed an owner. He took it on. That's how things work here: if something matters and no one is holding it, you're allowed to. In 2020 he left, out of curiosity. He wanted to see how other teams solved the same hard problems. He stayed close to the people the entire time. Two years later he came back. The reason was simple: the people, and the mission. Since February, he has led the entire engineering team. In his own words: "Plantix is a place where you can grow as fast as you're willing to. If you want to take on responsibility, it's there for the taking. If something makes you curious, you can go and work on it. That's how I moved from the app, to the backend, to the infrastructure — not because anyone assigned it to me, but because it needed doing and I was trusted to do it. Technology is the backbone of all of this. The agronomy, the data, the community — none of it reaches a farmer if the system isn't running. That's why quality and stability matter so much to us. A farmer standing in their field, opening the app to find out what's wrong with their crop, needs an answer right then. Our job is to make sure it's there. Every single time." In agriculture, growth often lies beyond the farmers you already know how to reach. It's a challenge we've spent years trying to solve.
