Review for Handshake Malfunction (R)

This is a great, funky tune, with a unique style I can't associate with anyone else's sid tunes. Well OK, maybe the closest match would be Abaddon, but still quite different from his works.

I really hope the placement in the compo doesn't discourage you from doing more sid music. There are a lot of things that are just right in this tune, both technically and musically. As Ian said, the compo was full of #2's: Looking at the scores, the difference between Danko (the winner) and you is less than 1.8 out of 10. In other words, it was an exceptionally even compo. Also, the sound system at X wasn't necessarily super gentle to some tunes, whereas it worked a bit better with others, which may have had an impact on the scores too.

Anyway, looking forward for your future sid compositions. :)

Actually this is a blast from the past. I composed it around 2010, but never finished it. In 2011 I converted the main section to SID and used it towards the end of the demo "Toxyc Taste" by Arsenic. Nevertheless, I always felt the need to finish this sample-based piece, and did so for X 2026 as a sign that I'm still alive, having not published anything since "Incoherent Nightmare" in 2016. That's 10 years, and I'm a bit sorry about that. :)

On my way home from X, waiting for the bus (Which did not come), I met with Ready, the sole coder of this mega demo.
We talked and finally took an Uber to the airport, finding a lot in common: age, kids, sports, C64, and a time paradox. :)
Congrats on coding this whole demo on your own. A lot of time must have gone into it.

This game is a port of the 1979`s Sega Arcade Game "Monaco GP", done with Claude Fable 5 with manually fixes by Fabrizio Radica.

In his GitHub Page you also see the untouched AI Version, which is as worse as Road Racer by Antonio Renzo from 8 weeks ago.

About the game:
You have to survive the longest time with the available lives. A crash steals you a life, same happens when running our of fuel. If lives reach zero, the game is over. Every 2000 pts you get a bonus life, if you have less than 5 lives left. There is also a high score table with the 10 best times.

Sure, another AI game, but not bad at all with the dark track sections.

Too easy-hearted to my style but what is good - is good. Masterfully built tune, well deserved win in a strong line-up. The reason it stands out I think is capturing the feel / atmosphere of the party the best. X'26 was exactly like this tune.
It was fun to meet'n'talk with you :)

What a microtonal banger, man :)

The whole tune is crazy but the mayhem part around the end is nitro.

It reminds me of a gig we had around the late '90s or so. We ended the set and there was a DJ afterwards. You know he span the typical rock stuff of the time, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana and so on. We were talking to the club owner when the DJ (a newbie on the site) put Goran Bregovic's Bubamara on the turntable. It is a balkan song from movie "Black Cat, White Cat" that resonates very deeply with people in my country. The club owned jumped hearing the first note and said "NOoooo" but it was already late, the song started. We did not understand first but soon we saw that people with alcohol in the brain sang the lyrics crying then they started to party so hard when the song got into the speed that they smashed the glasses on the ground and demolished half the club :D

Your tune is like that memory, mate. I'm proud of you.

My jaw dropped when The Lab started. I loved the basic fader when you change the rom font and make the dir move. Couldn't watch it for a few days because I needed a clear mind to really appreciate it.

My favorite effects:
- I have no idea how the 88 pixels tech tech works.
- I just love that CRT effect, it looks really really good
- all fadeins and outs are just perfected
- my children will love sixseven :-D (Are the voices samples or did Shogoon make the sid vocalize them? I'm thinking the first..)
- that Wolfenstein is really extreme :-D
- really love the recurring checkers.

Finally, the music is amazing. You really were the guys to beat this year!

@Bob: it is both! And it's a very simple routine :)
Regarding your question: the scenes are compressed in memory using dali, and all the unrolled code is generated at runtime from a "row template". Also Sulevi iterated many many times on the graphics to find a good compromise between compression and result!

Of course we had to simplify some parts: for example the title screen had sideborder sprites in the beginning, but I couldn't find a way to generalize the code in order to generate it.

Thank you for the chat at X, I wish I would have been recording all the tech info you explained to me!

I had a few leftover drawings/ideas after BCC, but I didn't immediately use them and forgot about it.
To prevent that happening again I decided this time to make made a demo and enter the compo (using pre existing code where I just have to drop in the drawings and SID).

The drawings were done quickly (as you can see), including the lettering.
I planned to clean up the lettering later, or replace it with GEOS lettering. I even started to type in text in my GEOS font tool, but party coding had worn me out by then and I just couldn't be bothered anymore.

I'm not a big fan of flickery things, but the idea is interesting and the color mixing works surprisingly well. Incredible that you can keep the new color technique working in all the effects. Honestly I would have liked it more without the flickering (and better fps). Those weird caustics are my favorite effect and the flicking actually works quite nicely there :-)
