Guess I'll try to explain this better once more:

I started this intro around feb 20th, and putting it into the compo was an afterthought, so there was NO time for an original tune and LITTLE time to optimize anything. The result was somewhat little space for music indeed, still a much larger tune would have been possible. Picking this *very* tiny one was my decision based on a style that (IMHO) matched the visuals.

The main objective of the size optimization here (which was done by classic code optimization as well as by using every tiny "hole" in graphics data like e.g. the black parts right and left of the logo also for code/data) was leaving more room for linked payload.

The end result looks something like this:

Compo: $4000-$7B52 (15187 bytes)
Final: $0801-$3F46 (14149 bytes)

The compo version contained 208 bytes of scrolltext somewhere in the middle, so total savings are 830 bytes in spite of stuff (VIC detection, chainloader/relocator, etc) being added.

That all said, I certainly agree this makes much more sense as it is right now!

Size optimization my ass... (<- also grew over the years)
My point with the compo edit was:
IF you do 16k or larger intro, then you don't have to be RAM-stingy with the music :)
So imho, it overall, makes way more sense now :)

iAN, there's now "more data" in it, mostly for the tune, but also for a longer scroll, that's nicely reflected in crunched size of course. But for practical usability, compare the uncompressed size, up to start of the scrolltext ;) For the compo version, there was close to no time doing any optimizations ... hitting the compo limit was good enough.

cool intro but
Quote:

* Aggressively optimized for size

Tagger_intro[ex](old).prg : 7256 bytes
Tagger_intro[ex](new).prg : 8905 bytes
Too bad the new tune is way larger and the size optimization was a wasted effort at this point ;)

The music done by Eclipse for this is also released standalone here: Tagger Intro Tune
