"Yet nothing would seem to dull a deft and noble intellect more swiftly, more surely than the sharp and bitter stimulant of erudition."

Death in Venice by Thomas Mann, p.19

Yesterday, my mum bought Death in Venice for one of her coworker's nephews. I couldn't let it leave my house without reading it, especially when I saw that it was a new translation.

Death in Venice by Thomas Mann )

I bought myself a new copy of Scott Pilgrim #3 since my first copy has been with a former blockmate of mine since 2007 and I have given up on asking for it back. So my SP's are complete once more and ready for serious re-reading concomitantly with writing my submission to [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]. I haven't started it yet because I'd like to finish my first draft of my thesis proposal first. But I've got a decent sense of what I want to do with my 15000+ words.

15000+ words. God bless me, I've never written anything longer than 12000. I realize that that is nothing in comparison to some fanfiction writers' works but by gum, it is a challenge for me.

Also got myself a cheap movie release copy of the "Slumdog Millionaire" book today. It came out to around $5, not bad. I'm going to read it with the movie OST, just to set the mood properly. I really want to read the book before I see the movie.

Speaking of movies, as I was walking to my tutorial today, I passed through Power Plant mall and I saw a HUGE poster for Watchmen plastered beside the glass doors going in and out of the mall. I can't believe it's already coming out this Friday! I remember when we were all just hearing that it had been optioned and wondering if would even start filming. It seems so far away now. LOL

Currently waiting for BH 6 to finish downloading. Can't wait to see this season finale!

I'm also trying to figure out how one would sing "End" by the Cure if done with an acoustic guitar. It is pretty hard to figure out!

ALSO ALSO: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] I got your BEAUTIFUL postcard. I love it! :D Thank you!

I had this dream this morning at around 5 AM. I know it was around that time because I got up to turn off my alarm and then I went back to sleep until 530ish.

Well, that's almost an entire week without posting! I've been Twittering, but it's mostly little exclamations. I've been busier than expected. And man, nakakatamad magpost, ang init.

We had our second Cellbio exam yesterday so I spent most of the day just rewriting and revising my notes in the library. God, studying in the library what the hell, Hope. But seriously, the coverage for this exam was pretty long. There were some things I really didn't know when it got to the exam proper and I could have kicked myself. Hopefully, I did well enough in the essay portion that my test grade will at least be in the 3.5 neighborhood. *angsts about grades*

I'm still slogging through my thesis proposal. And that's all you need to know about that.

We don't have an sustainability workshop to hold tomorrow, thank goodness, but we do have a debriefing regarding the last one. I've got a bunch of notes that I want to address and take into consideration for the next one. I'm kind of feeling anxious about it because I still have to revamp the PowerPoint and that'll take all of next week, based on the stuff we'll discuss tomorrow.

I also have to edit the program and somehow manage to figure out how I'm going to present the paper I'm reporting on in Cellbio next, next week. It's 30% of our grade and our prof is known to stop presenters in the middle and send them away if they suck. Augh, and the case study and papers for Ecology...

I have to admit that I'm not really feeling this term. I've been hoping that it would pass but no dice. I need a +2 on my Will if I'm going to get through this all without being a complete bitch.

In less whiny news, I've gotten two new tutees. Matt left to do his OJT in Australia so he gave them to me. That brings it all up to five and while I enjoy the tutoring itself, the commute is just a pain going from Rockwell to the Fort in thirty minutes. It's like an impossibility. So I'll have to adjust my sched a bit more to make it all work.

I also watched the Wonder Woman animated film and enjoyed it thoroughly. My nitpick blinders were off the entire time so all I've got is LOVE for the movie. Yay Amazons! It was nice to see how they blended the Perez WW backstory with this new one. I was pretty sad re: watching stuff because next week, the last ep of Being Human is coming out. I was a little nervous until I heard that BBC renewed it for a second season of eight episodes. Then, I figured that Annie, Mitchell and George were probably alright. Also next week, the second to the last TBBT episode for the season :(

Sorry to [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] about not making it to the CWG folio launch today. I smsed you but I figure you wouldn't have gotten it in time. I really couldn't make it. :( I hope it went well.

So, this morning, my mother fell while at work. According to her, it may as well have been a scene from a slapstick comedy. Also according to her, her pride was the one more hurt that her throbbing knee but I know better than to trust any Swann and their underestimations of physical pain.

Unless it is me, guys. When I estimate pain, it is always accurate. It is also always a flesh wound and I can still take it.

So of course, I am worried about my mum a whole lot.

I have a tutorial to get to so I'm leaving in a few minutes.

I had a weird dream this morning, though. I dreamed that my bio42 block was on this field trip to a beach. The weird part was that the beach was supposedly in Tagaytay City, and also the beach was located underneath an medium-sized overpass. The shore was huge, all black sand and leading right off a city block into the water, which I knew to be the 'street'. The entire beach was under the shadow of the overpass but I could see enough of the sun between the slats of the concrete to take pictures of it. In my dream, the sun was setting the entire time. It was bright red and it stained the sky orange.

Right across the street/sea were buildings. Lots and lots of buildings.

I had a bag of cameras, all kinds and sizes, and I was lugging them around. The only color I could see was on the bathing suits of my blockmates and that aforementioned sun. It was very weird to be playing on an urban beach. JM was still dating his ex in my dream and for some reason the red bikini with white flowers she was wearing is very vivid in my head.

And after the beach scene, we all went up the mountain behind the sand and had a sharing session in this austere little room. The chairs had maroon pleather seats and backs with a chrome frame.

I had put my bag of cameras on the floor but I was wearing my dSLR and the last thing I remember was taking a shot of JM and Lime and hearing the click and whirr of the shutter. Weird weird weird.

Well, thing I didn't notice #908484213...n: It's been a year since I've gotten my undergraduate degree.

Well, it was a year last Feb 9 anyway.

And also, it's been nearly three years since I've last seen my father.

cut for personal thinky thoughts )

Maybe I'm just feeling really vulnerable because of reading Nightwing's last issue. I hate how Tim Drake finally felt like he was being written properly in the last issue of someone else's book. The conversation he, Dick and Alfred had, even counting the part where he was skulking up the steps of the Cave, was just full of the reason why I love the Batfamily.

I'm trying to look at recent events outside of the idea of marketing and advertising. I'm not interested in editorial mandates or writerly hubris. If one was to look at the Batfamily story outside of all these things, the big picture as it were, it's easier to appreciate the text.

These are characters who've lost almost everything, and most importantly their families, but managed to find love and validation in other people. The last few years in the Bat storyline has been one of conflict because the lynch pin of their family, Bruce, was slowly losing himself.

And when the center of their world is unsteady, of course the Batkids get affected. Dick, by his aimlessness and search for meaning in the Mission, Tim, who's lost everything and was unfortunate enough to pin his hopes on a drowning man, and Jason, who needs help just when everyone else needs it too. Steph, recently back from the dead a.k.a. Africa, was charged with taking care of Tim and making him a 'better Robin' by crazy Bruce when she could've just been helping him become better, period.

Although, I do not blame Steph as I would like to think that she has a purpose beyond keeping Tim from spiraling out of control. You know, finishing high school, catching up with her mother, the one who thought that she'd died... yeah.

Cass Cain also lost a great deal, despite her current shallow affiliation with the Outsiders. She doesn't believe in Bruce or Batman, she believes in the Mission, so you'd think that recent events wouldn't hinder her ability to fight crime, right wrongs, etc. But since the storyline OYL and the revelation of her pre-adolescent killing, she's been unable to get back on her feet and do actual good in Gotham. Bruce, with the typical screwed up judgment due to his aforementioned problems, kicked her out and severed her ties from the Mission.

To be honest, I think that the Batman R.I.P. and FC storyline was just perfect, in terms of Batman's death/temporal displacement. After years of Bruce disappearing mentally and emotionally, Bruce is finally gone physically. He's barely been there for Gotham, or them, otherwise.

So I'm really interested in the 'Battle for the Cowl' storyline because it has the possibility of actually focusing on the Batfamily some more. Of course, in relation with the other contenders for the right to carry on the Batname thing. This is the best time for them to band together and be smart about focusing on the Mission and each other.

I'm hoping that BatCowl, as I will call it for short and forever, will help them begin to heal and finally get over the years they were losing Bruce.

Okay, I just wrote a Batmeta and father post. What.

Watchmen Portraits )

Pictures were taken from EW.com. I'm kind of iffy about all the viral stuff that's being produced to promote the Watchmen movie but these pictures are gorgeous :D.

I understand that Watchmen needs the promotion; despite it having a huge comic book fan following and basically being the precursor of the graphic novel, therefore beloved by most liberally literary folk, Watchmen is an unknown quantity to the rest of the world. So they do need to market the shit out of it to get the masses to the theaters.

I'm pretty excited. :D OMG less than a month to Watchmen!!!

Also, [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] and I watched 'My Bloody Valentine' yesterday and while it wasn't in 3D, we were freaked out a lot. It was good enough that we were arguing about the identity of the killer almost the entirety of the movie. Of course, there was gratuitous violence and gore but hello, this is a slasher movie. We agreed that if we'd watched in in 3D we'd have died shrieking.

Jensen Ackles was fucking hot in it. :D Ate Kam and I were half-disgusted and half-fainting in our seats. Holy crap, I want his jackets.

Anyway, I have no idea if I can handle 'Friday the 13th', despite Jared Padalecki being in it. :(

We got to discuss a bunch of geeky things over lunch at Kaya and I'm sad that I didn't get to stay longer, sorry Ate Kam!

Man, I have a lot of stuff to do.

I forgot to mention that for some reason unknown to me, the bus I was on yesterday didn't stop at Glorietta and it went straight on to EDSA. My heart jumped into my throat a little because LOL, I didn't know where it would stop next! Apparently, after Glorietta, buses on the Buendia-Ayala route stop at the other end of Buendia, at the MRT station.

My face was like this: D: the entire time. LOL, I contemplated taking the MRT from Buendia to Ayala and decided that it wasn't worth the 10 pesos. So I walked from the Buendia station to the EDSA crosswalk and eventually to Glorietta 4.

It took me ten minutes to get from Buendia to Ayala station and another 10 to get to my destination, not bad considering. It was fun walking on EDSA since the sidewalk was HUGE, clean and empty. It wasn't smoggy, but it might have just been the time, around 1129-1140ish. I'm glad I was wearing my hiking boots though, because it was around 1-1.8 kilometers from the Buendia station to where I was going in Glorietta 4.
